How much do you guys think books and supplies will cost for D1 year? (I happen to be going to UIC)

FAFSA lists an estimated cost of ~$11,000 but I think that is too high

Hey, I put the same question before...and I'll attend UIC too.
Will you commute or rent ?

take max amt, and subtract left over from new amount for next year.

Live by UIC first yr, see if you have the 1-2 hours to spare that it takes to commute back and forth. IF you re really good at time management, and feel you can afford to lose the 2 hrs, you can save money for the following 3 years by commuting.

I only say err on the side of safety because it is your first year there.

I live about 3 miles north from school. I leave my house exactly 1/2 hour before class starts. I'm NEVER late. We get free CTA as UIC students. You can get to campus from anywhere in the city for free by CTA.

I really enjoy getting the heck away from campus at the end of the day. I don't like the pressure cooker of all the dental students stacked together stressing each other out.

However the flip side is that I miss most social opportunities. You miss the random happy hours after class or meeting at the bar for a Sox game. With so many students together, you sort of get forgotten when you live away from campus.

Also, you can find much better apartments for less money if you live away from campus. Near UIC is a crappy area. There is a little bubble of student housing that is nice but other than that its a dangerous low income neighborhood.

I'd rather save a couple hundred each month and live in a better neighborhood.
