On interview feedback someone wrote:

What negatively impressed you?
Sometimes it seemed like they were trying too hard to defend Osteopathy. There seems to be a somewhat complacent, and at times almost defeatest attitude about their reputation as a second-rate school. In fact, they explicitly defended osteopathic medicine (I think rightly) as a discipline that is just as entitled to the respect that MD's have garnered within both medicine and society at large.

Can anyone further explain this about TCOM interviewers?

The interviewee probably drew someone from the OMM department for their interview. The opinions stated seem to be from someone a little too overexposed to the OMM faculty. I would be surprised if a prosepective student had a similar experience interviewing with a surgeon or family practice physician at TCOM.

I would agree that those in the OMM department have a "defeatest" attitude and feel that TCOM is second rate. This is probably because in so far as OMT is concerned we, TCOM, are. OMM is just not stressed at TCOM. Thus the staff in the OMM Dept. gets very little respect. As a result, many have that "chip on their shoulder" attitude your quote spoke of. Students here place very little emphasis on OMM because of this; in addition to the fact that many of the classes in this department are taught by third and fourth year medical students, which at times, can make them a real joke. I've watched fifty percent of my class walk out of lecture because of some *****ic statement made by a third year medical student instructor.

I would only give the quote from interviewfeedback weight if you are a premed student interested in OMT. If that is the case, TCOM probably is not the place for you. I would look more closely at KCOM or something similar. If, on the other hand, you have little interest in OMT, and your medical interests sway slightly more towards the center (e.g. towards allopathy) then I think TCOM has an excellent reputation and it would consequently be a fine choice.
