I can't decide whether to take 2 semesters at a local community college to get my tech certificate or is there some test that I can take to get the certificate? I believe its the PTCB? What's the best review book to get for it nowadays?

It is the PTCB. Go to their website to find out information about when its offered and what is the best route for you to take to get your certification. You may want to get some pharm tech classed under your belt first. Although many take the test and pass without any pharm tech classwork, myself included. As far as what books to use to study for the exam there are many threads discussing this. I think you can use just about any of them. I used the Mosby's study guide and it was very helpful...:luck:

We should have a rule that all sarcastic responses end in a /sarcasm. While I understand it places us squarely in the 'dork' realm - it would help all of the new kids in town differentiate between the legit advice and the I'm-tired-of-always-reading-this responses...

That being said - passing the PTCB is required for certification. You can take a course, or simply study and pass the exam.

The easiest way is dependent on you - what you are capable of.

How would I go about getting a job once I passed the test and got the certificate?

Stop trying to kill the fun. 👎

perhaps at the end of every time you post you should put /boring 😛

I bought the Mosby's PTCB exam. review book, and took the PTCE.

First, before studying, I took a $29 practice exam available on the PTCB website.

Then I hit the books for 3 weeks, pretending like I was studying for any one of my classes.

I then took another practice exam, and scored dramatically better (within "passing" range). So, I decided to pony up for the real deal.

I find that the 12-18 month DeVry type programs are a waste, in California at least, where all you need to do is pass the PTCE and you can work as a CphT. I believe other states might require an actual course, though, and if that's the case and you want to work as a tech, you'll need to take the course.

If you just want the CphT for the cool letters, to use as an augmentation for pharmacy school, or just for personal efficacy then you could get away with just taking the exam, but to work in a professional capacity you'd need to take the course (In certain states).

I would try to get some actual pharmacy experience. It helped me a lot in the exam especially because i was able to asks pharmacists and other techs for help /honest

otherwise, you could try to get around the ridiculous security and have someone else take it for you/sarcasm

In California, many places no longer hire you unless you have your tech license. All the clerk jobs seem to get filled quickly and are rare.

buy the book, take the test is my advice

Heh, funny story about that.

I was getting a scrip filled at Wal*Mart, and I asked the "technician" there if she had the CphT. She said, "No, in fact they moved me here from Ready to Wear (women's clothing) last week."

Cool.

lol, might be different in NorCal

LA/OC seems saturated with people wanting to get pharm exp

Maybe so, because it was pretty easy to get into both hospitals and small-time pharmacies. In Davis and Sacramento I put in several applications, and I actually got 4 call-backs, and I just barely got my CphT.

The bay Area is probably saturated like LA is, but I don't know why this part of central Northern Cali is any less saturated. Maybe because we don't have a medical school for people to not get accepted into and then go into Pharm? LOL... I really don't know.

But it was extremely easy, much easier than I ever thought it'd be after reading SDn for a while.

bwahaha, things move fast in walmart.

I don't remember what happened but my boss told me Florida was making it mandatory for a person to receive a year's training in an actual academic setting before they are allowed to work in the pharmacy. I was exhausted, but that may be something to be aware of it you are planning to work in Florida.

Oddly enough, if I went back there tomorrow, she'd probably be in Electronics or something.

Target and Walmart both have people who don't have CphTs working in the pharmacy, yet they won't fire one of them and hire someone like me with a CphT because I'd demand a higher wage, even though I would know the job better, and would be able to interface with the pharmacist in a more knowledgable way.

God bless America!
