After almost an entire cycle of waiting, I finally got 4 interviews, the earliest being in February. Of those, I was alternate listed at three places. Today, five minutes ago, I just received a call by Western University for a spot in their 2015 class.

Now here is where you can tell me I'm stupid. The thing is, I've been preparing to reapply and already had in my mindset that I am going to have to reapply. I've written my personal statement, asked for letters, mailed transcripts--the only reason I haven't hit the reapply button is because I'm still waiting for a transcript to be delivered. With this in mind, I'm actually considering not accepting the spot at Western, mostly for two reasons:

1) It's not necessarily the school I was picturing to go to medical school. I had a great first impression of it, but after seeing some other schools after that interview, I definitely realized I would prefer to go to other schools, such as a school with a hospital attached to it and with a wider variety of residency placements (this is just going off memory from my interview date, but I seem to remember SOME complaints about being able to get into residency programs through Western). Also, does anyone have any experience with the kind of doors Western opens? I want to do things like Doctors Without Borders and other programs where I maybe go provide medical care abroad. Is this easy to do through programs like Western? I'm assuming yes, I just need to look into it again. Finally, I was hoping to specialize, maybe be a radiologist or orthopedic surgeon. Obviously, this is VERY possible with a DO program, though I know it will take a little more effort on my part (which I'm willing to do).

2) I have already put in a TON of effort to reapply this year and by accepting my spot at Western, that will be throwing that away. Of course, I still have to deal with secondary applications, interviews, possibly doing a post-bac program if I get into it, etc. These will all be tons more money, but I would expect that through them, I could get into the medical program of my choice for next year if I really worked on beefing up my application this year. Of course, this is a HUGE maybe anyway.

The more I think about it and after writing the above reasons, I think I'm going to accept the spot. However, if any of you could maybe give your input on the ups and downs of accepting vs not accepting, that would be appreciated. Sorry in advance if this post offends anyone or if I appear unappreciative! I am mostly in shock I think and just want some advice before I make a huge decision that may or may not be a bad one.

Again, remember: I want to specialize, I want to be able to take advantage of many opportunities (such as working abroad as a doctor), and I don't want my choice in medical school to be the limiting factor in these things (NOT THAT I HAVE A CHOICE RIGHT NOW, but POSSIBLY in the future I could).

Please, maybe check out this forum if you want to see my stats and changes I've made to my application over the year and tell me if you think I'd be better off just reapplying:

Maybe Goro and gyngyn could give me their opinions? I am pretty sure you guys are both DO school administrators, correct? And you have given me great advice in the past which I really appreciate. So POSSIBLY one last time, give me a little more advice, please. I have to accept the spot by tomorrow afternoon! I would appreciate it!

I think you would be making a poor decision to pass on the acceptance.

I can't imagine going through this process twice if I had the option of doing it once - don't be vacuous.

Take the acceptance and run. Remember it's not the school you get into but the residency. Unless it's a DO school (which it isn't) take the offer.

You're more than likely going to get bashed for this thread. All I will say is, "TAKE THE SPOT!"

I've always heard that schools talk and if you pass up an acceptance to re-apply it almost universally doesn't go well. I'd just go to school, work hard, and get the residency you want.

I feel like a similar thread was made recently about turning down an acceptance in hopes of going to a better school and it totally backfired.

That thread was warranted because he was only accepted into a DO program. Where as OP has been accepted to an MD school. No brainer IMO

I am faculty at an MD school in CA.
Western is a fine school.
They have docs that serve in every humanitarian effort (including médecins sans frontières).
Don't go there if you will not be a proud alum.
That said, you would be goofy to re-apply with an acceptance in hand.

Take the acceptance.

If people have matched into derm/anaesthesia from the Carribbean, you can do it from a US MD. You just need to work for it, like anyone at a more "prestigious" school. Giving up an acceptance to spend more money and go back into the applicant pool is a terrible idea, considering the fact that you might not even get into a better school, or any school for that matter. This discussion bars any disadvantage you have from reapplying despite holding an MD acceptance (it looks bad). Be grateful you have the one, because a pretty good number of applicants go multiple cycles and have zero.

Why is everyone saying OP got accepted into an MD school? Western is a DO school in cali...

Either way, I agree with everyone else. Take the acceptance!

The bat person is... doing what they do.

OP: Given the stats you had last year, the improvements you list in the other thread really don't add an extra 'wow' factor. If something was holding you back, it might have been the PS, school list, or interviewing skills (as suggested in your other post). Honestly, I'd take it. Western has a good reputation around here (SDN, and CA).

Best case if you don't: you reapply (with the added anxiety, cost, time, etc) and get into another school you'd prefer. Worst case: you don't land another acceptance. The cost of both seems bleak, but the not getting in would be... heartbreaking...

Congrats on the acceptance!

In all seriousness though, from what I can gather the whole re-application process is a whole different ballgame, pretty risky to do if you already have an acceptance in hand. DO schools can match into good residencies, dude!

Have you ever heard the adage "never look a gift horse in the mouth?" It totally applies here. Take the acceptance that you worked hard for. When people reject amazing opportunities like this...it is in very, very bad taste. Excel in medical school, many more doors will open for you.

tl;dr Take the acceptance. No point passing it up. If you want a better school, be prepared to work.

Yeah okay I'm getting a resounding "take the offer." And I appreciate no one being outright offensive about the post, again, I'm not trying to offend.

I think I'm going to take it, then hopefully maybe get off the waitlist at either UC Irvine or EVMS (my other alternatives I'm still waiting on). I can always decline after accepting an acceptance, correct?

Even if I don't get in to those schools, I'm pretty sure I'd be happy going to Western anyway. Thanks for the advice everyone.

And idk if those are trolls up there but just in case: Western is a DO school!!!

Yes, you can come off any waitlist if you get accepted.

But then I could still later deny Western if this occurs? Without consequences or any one getting mad at me?

Not saying I will! For all you administrators watching this thread... I'm paranoid.

Schools completely understand that you can get off a waitlist and give their acceptance back. I'm not sure about the DO/MD crossover, but schools know what school you are holding an acceptance from and generally give you a little while to decide. So if you know you would leave for another choice, upon receiving a full acceptance (no provisions) it would be in good taste to notify Western so that they can pull the next person off their waitlist and the trickle down can continue.

Edit: But no, nobody would be mad.

That's good, because I was ready to flay you over the electrons. DO's CAN be orthopods and radiologists. Just ask @Tired. Don't engage in magic thinking, just take the accept and don't look back. You'll get a fine education. I have a lot of respect for Western grads, including my own family doctor.

The more I think about it and after writing the above reasons, I think I'm going to accept the spot. And yeah I actually shadowed an ENT specialist (one of the hardest specialties to get into) who went to Western. So I know it's possible to get a good residency, no doubt about that.

If you do well, you will have a very good shot at competitive specialties.

You barelyyy got accepted at one school this round, at the very last minute. I would say there's a slim chance you would get in anywhere else next year, you would be crazy not to go....

Wayyyy too risky to be a re applicant

Malcolm gladwell's David & Goliath theory = it is proven that underdogs perform better than those born in privilege..

You will be a DO "underdog" going into residency not an MD birthed into residency via privilege...

Use it to your advantage to become the best damn doctor ever!

your step scores will probably be higher if you go to a DO school vs a MD school. - read malcolm gladwells theory to see why...

Take this acceptance and run with it.

Now go read David and Goliath by Malcolm gladwell,

Thank me later

You are no longer being dumb. Congratulations! And best of luck on getting off those waitlists. Worst comes to worst though, you'll still be a doctor.

I am confused, isn't Western actually one of the "better" or most reputable DO schools?
