I know all you premed teenies don't exactly appreciate my being so blunt, but here's some cold hard truth for ya'

Medicine is NOT ER
It is not Scrubs
Most doctors are ugly
And the nurses are ugly
People don't give a @#%^ that you're a doctor; most people think you're an overpaid, greedy SOB (which most of us are or at least soon will be  )
You're gonna work like a dog... often smell like a dog, eat like a dog, hump like a dog. Medicine turns you into an animal. There is no time leftover to be human.
There is no glamour in medicine.
And as far as I can see, there ain't no @%#$%$^# philanthropy either. We're all out to get ours.

You will discover all this soon enough. Just thought I'd give you a little heads up. But if medicine still sounds good to you after hearing the truth, welcome to the club. - Mr. Pretentious -

You're telling it like it is. Just remember that most of the people on this board totally don't know what they are getting themselves into.

And also, remember that half of these people will never manke it into medical school anyway.

oh WOW.. and I thought medicine was going to be like Marcus Welby M.D. There go my plans of practicing medicine in an underserved area or volunteering with something like doctors without borders.
I'm glad someone was able to give me this eye opening information before it was too late.
I think investment banking sounds like a good career.

I disagree!!

Everything in life is what you make of it!! Doctors must face a lot of those things that you mentioned, but that does not make them who they are or their happiness as a doctor. Just like in life, there are going to be hard times, but as long as you keep a positive attitude then you will be happy in your profession and get the respect that you deserve.

Character is developed when these types of things are thrown in one's way. Choose to do the right thing, despite what everyone says and you will be successful. You will be one of the few that figures out life's meaning.

Take care,
God bless

Where are you in your medical training?

I agree with Beckie.

Also, I know a few doctors myself who are amazing individuals who go on to do amazing things in their lives. The ones who go into medicine for the wrong reasons are the bitter ones...

Check out the "give up six figure salary to go to med school?"
thread...and you'll see some great potential docs.

Peace

is it at least like Quincy???

oh well, guess I'll have to go be a lawyer.

Listen kids. Take it all in. Listen to the bad, listen to the good. But know that whatever you hear and whatever you read... it's your life to live.
Don't let someone else tell you how it is and how it's going to be. Medicine is only one fragment of your life. It's what you do, but it doesn't have to be who you are.
Of course we identify ourselves by the profession we have, the titles we earn, and the awards we put on our shelves...but in the end, it's about the people we love, and being loved in return.
Yeah. it's a simple cornball thing-- but come on folks, be thankful for what you have. I saw an iraqi kid on tv whose face was blown off due to some misfired artillery. His life will never be the same.
Look beyond the flat panel lcd that's in front of you, the comfortable confines of your air conditioned carpeted home, and think just for a moment, how lucky you really are.

Again it's your life. But just don't live the life-- enjoy the ride. People view the same things in different ways... so the question isn't 'do you know what you're getting into', but how will you view the tough road ahead?

this is now getting long-- but i'm going to copy and paste part of an email my friend wrote to me. She finished med school at michigan and now is a resident at upenn.

"i was talking to this guy at church today who is about to graduate from med school; and he was telling me about how bitter he had become over the course of med school, and how now he really discourages people who are thinking about applying...and i was horrified! he was telling me how he started all excited and had all these idealistic hopes and views of the medical field only to have them crushed...i tried to persuade him otherwise, but he wouldn't believe that i still loved what i did....so i just hope that what happened to him won't happen to you...i'm sure it won't, but if anyone tries to tell you that medicine is not worth it, don't believe them! it's definitely very draining at times, but there's no other field like it!"

also.. i bet you suk a lot of dik.

Damn, and I wanted to be just like Hawkeye Pierce on MASH. Should have listened to that prophetic first year at my interview that was cycling naked past the interviewees screaming "go into law!".

Lavidee, you are so right. In the end its about the people we love, and being loved in return. What more is there?

dude - you forgot doogie howser M.D.

and Judging Amy - sort of now that that dude is in residency

Yeah, sounds about right. Heard all that, seen some too.

People may be misunderstanding the OP, though. He may not be as cynical as people assume. He ends with

But if medicine still sounds good to you after hearing the truth, welcome to the club.

It might be the case that Senor Pretencion actually loves medicine, but just wants to warn away anyone who doesn't have their eyes open, and their heart open.

A man may be a doctor but it doesn't tell me much about him. The way I view things is that titles, awards etc are pieces of papers and letters. Identification to me is understanding what drives the person, why is he doing the things that he is and most importantly, is he passionate about his job😉

My mentor told me that I'd know I chose the right career path when someone asks me if I'm happy and I can answer "Yes" without hesitation.

 Yes, I love this advice. Do everything with an open-mind and without bias. Don't live your life through other people's eyes.

 Materialistic things are an iillusion. Money, fame, all that stuff won't matter if you don't have friends and family who really adore you.

I appreciate it because your threads are amusing:laugh: Variety is always good.

Though I appreciate your boldness in shooing away false realities, I must partially disagree with the "most doctor's are ugly" quip. At UC Davis Med Center, we have an uncanny number of great looking female med students, residents, and attendings (not to mention nurses). Perhaps I am fortunate to be in such a place, and can only hope every other hospital is such a hot bed of attractiveness...

Most doctors are ugly

Hmm good thing I look good. 😉

well i'm 25 and i still have hope because even though medicine is not ER or scrubs, it is doogie howser.
peace

I don't need to be a doctor to do that. "You don't love me...you just love my DOCTOR style."

Yeah some of what you are saying is true, but it also has to do with how you deal with these situations. And, I understand that you just want to give us your reasons for the mistakes some people make by thinking medicine is like ER or whatever. And, trust me there are many. And, it is usually the bitter ones. Also, I do not think the OP was bitter him self. He is "just tellin it like it is." Either way thanks for the input. 😉

Telling it like it is = I'm bitter

and you forgot trauma, life in the ER too.

pretty soon he will be telling us that crime scene investigators aren't as hot as the ones on CSI! pulllllease!

Hey i thought doctors are all upper class. Whereas dentists just "go for the money" doctors are supposedly noble. By the way did you see how on friends the ugly dentist had that chick😀

People tell me that doctors are more upper class than the dentists. What other professions can compete though?

If you want something to play with
Go and find yourself a toy
Baby, my time is too expensive
And I'm not a little boy

If you are serious
Don't play with my heart, it makes me furious
But if want me to love you
Then, baby, I will, girl, you know I will

Tell it like it is
Don't be ashamed to let your conscience be your guide
But I-I-I-I-I know deep down inside of me
I believe you love me, forget your foolish pride

Life is too short to have sorrow
You may be here today and gone tomorrow
You might as well get what you want
So go on and live, baby, go on and live

Tell it like it is
I'm nothin' to play with, go and find yourself a toy
But I-I-I-I-I
Tell it like it is
My time is too expensive
And I'm not your little boy

FADE
Mm mm, tell it like it is
