Hey guys
I'm planning on doing a 5 week APPE at a downtown chicago hospital and before I committ I was wondering if anybody can give any insight on how to find housing for a short period like this. I figured if I did it over the summer there would be plenty of college kids looking to sublet, but I don't know the chicago housing market at all. How much can I expect to pay? Is this a realisitic idea, to be able to find housing for 5 weeks?

I'll be in chicago too. There were some good listings on craigslist. I had a friend point me in the right direction on what areas to look into. There was some interesting stuff near wicker park and toward evanston. Edgewater seems fun 😀

Are there a bunch of fees with that site or is it just the rate that is posted for each listing? I've been looking at it for this summer it seems nice

As far as I know, there is an airbnb service fee,50 bucks or so

Can anybody ballpark some rent prices for those 5 weeks?

I've been seeing anywhere from 1200 to 3000 depending on the area. I'm trying to stay relatively close to the lincoln park area but I want to be near the L or one of the lines. That airbnb site is awesome!

Based on my preferences and the area/cost, I'm looking to drop a couple grand (at least) for housing. 🙁

Oh well! It's chicago and this rotation is SO worth it!

Oh and those are prices for 6 weeks and no roommates with wifi included.

Those are definitely more pharmacist friendly prices as opposed to most students. Edgewater is a good option but its basically the furthest north you can go without being in the suburbs. But still decent proximity from downtown Chicago. Probably some of the best prices you'll see too. I'm a fan!

Hey pharm, I'm assuming you're talking about Northwestern memorial hospital. With a location like that, the access to the heart of down town is extremely convenient so you can live almost anywhere in the city and get there in less than 45 minutes taking the train or bus. The best option is to go on craigslist and post what your situation is and I bet someone would make a deal with you. Or just find housing there from the already posted ads. But regardless, not sure if you're trying to really enjoy the expierience (and live in the best neighborhoods) or if you're just trying to stay on a normal student budget and pay 600-900 (add 25% of that for the extra week) for rent. I stayed in chicago for pharm school and had my own studio which was a good size for about 720. I would imagine if you got a person who owns their property and has a spare bedroom you would pay 600-900 (per month) as well for a room. But if you want something nice then the prices RXLea are probably more realistic maybe a little less if again you'd get a roommate and stay somewhere nice. Good thing about Chicago is if you're paying $1000 bucks for housing, for a month, the place will almost certainly be decent and in a fair neighborhood.

Thanks man Here's my deal. I don't want to disclose the hospital name but it is not the one you mentioned, though it is just west of the loop. i don't mind at all having to take the L around town as I won't have a car. I'm ideally looking to get a studio for the 5 weeks, but could do roomshare with other college kids as well. I'd probably want to live in the typical college neighborhoods, I certainly don't need fancy accomodations, just enough to get by and at a good price, and not in a crime filled neighborhood. otherwise i know nothing about this town and any help is appreviated

I lived in Bucktown and loved it.

Just west of the loop - pink line or blue line will probably work.

I recommend Bucktown/Logan square/wicker park for safe and fun and good L access.

Okay I think I know where then... but yea close to west loop, I'd recommend #1 Pilsen - reason? It's the best deal you'll find, safe enough, somewhat quiet neighborhood but still a 5 min bus ride to all the action and about a 20 min bus ride to all west loop hospitals. 2nd I'd recommend University Village - But b/c of its ideal location, it's a bit more expensive (and Pilsen is 5 min from UV so, another reason I recommend Pilsen). I also agree with the guy above, Bucktown/Logan Square/Wicker Park are all good options and fun neighborhoods to live in as far as night life and lots of housing for flexible situations like yours.

Heres a map of CHicago Neighborhoods so you can get a feel for how close in proximity things are.. Chicago's not a huge city in size.. so you can literally get through each neighborhood driving in 5-7 min. Hospital should be near the "Near West Side" Anyways, anymore questions just ask. Good luck

I love Pilsen but wasn't sure some people would adjust to it in 5 week or so - it's still a little "edgy" for some lol

Thanks a lot man you've been a big help. Pilsen looks fine from the map, also the University village and near west loop areas will be real close to the hospital. I think now I will be doing 2 rotations there, for 10 weeks in total. My thoughts were that if I did the rotations over the summer, a bunch of college kids would be looking to sublet over the summer since their classes wouldn't be in session. Is that a reasonable assumption? If not, how can I get started with looking for places? I am not looking to commit just yet, but need to be sure finding affordable housing is possible before I commit to the rotation itself. I can live in a tiny place with plenty of roommates (need my own room), don't care for just 10 weeks, all I want is to keep it cheap so I have some going out money. thanks!

Haha mace is plenty. I never carried Anything.

I'm not worried about you, but I don't know anything about the other kid. Pilsen was a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood that is now the up and coming hipster neighborhood (previously wicker park). Pilsen is a straight shot on the red line (Chinatown stop) from Lincoln park.

Pilsen is a mix. You do you students from UIC living there, especially in east Pilsen. University Village is heavily influenced by UIC, and you may find some people renting out rooms to students. It is a bit of a walk to the nearest el stop. You will also find a number of UIC students in the other neighborhoods of the near west side; Greektown, Tri-Taylor, and Little Italy. The two big realtors of the area are Gallucci and New West. A word of advice for this area from a former UIC student; do not go west of Damen. It starts getting really bad there.

There are several CTA el stops which service the Pilsen area. The Pink line stop 18th street will take you into the heart of the neighborhood.
