Hey guys....the lady who is in charge of the MPH program at Temple was in Costa Rica for a month, so I got a chance to meet with her down here and we had a great discussion....it was more like talking to a friend than a supervisor...anyways, we talked a lot about the new MPH/DMD program, and some things came up which I thought might interest you to possibly join this program.
Basically, Im interested in international dentistry....so my biggest concern was not to be able to get an international experience with the MPH....at Columbia, this was a for sure "NO", because Columbia's MPH program is very rigid and very urban based....John Hopkins is the place to be for international health, but they dont have a dental school.....however, it was very comforting to find out that Temple's program is very flexible and very supportive of my interests.
I always wanted to do my MPH practicum in another country, and Temple will give me full support just as long as I can find a valid supervisor...I was interested in doing some work in Africa or India, and Temple's Public health dept. has some contacts in Cameroon and South Africa, so getting a supervisor is very likely in those countries, If I choose to go there....Having experience in South Africa would look so much better than a fancy Ivy League degree from Columbia.....
EVEN BETTER...Temple dental is also being very supportive of me, and since I'd be doing my public health practicum in another country, I would also be able to satisfy much of my clinical requirements overseas as well...isnt that awesome? So, between 3rd and 4th year, instead of being in Philly doing your clinical requirements, you could be in South Africa doing it....
Of course, nothing is written in stone yet, but the wheels are in motion....Hopefully, Ive convinced some of ya to join me!!! By the way, did I mention that Temple Dental pays for your MPH, so its free!! 😀
