Hello! I hope I am posting this in the right place.

I was accepted into Temple School of Pharmacy for Fall 2017. I am from Maryland and I do not know the area that well. Obviously I will be needing housing, so I just have a couple of questions. Any advice/input is appreciated!!!

Where do most pharmacy students live?
Any places to avoid?
Where to look for housing?
Transportation suggestions

Thank you! :)

Don't live near the pharmacy school, it's in a bad area. Center City would be best, but of course it's the most expensive. If you want a little cheaper, look into Fairmount, especially if the property is close to the Broad Street Line (orange line of the subway). That way you can just walk to the subway and take it a few stops to get to school. I put the area into Craigslist, and anything around here would be fine http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/apa/5936320801.html.

It always helps to consult crime maps. The area around Temple especially immediately north of the campus is infamous for its violent crime issues including rape. The Trauma center at Temple gets plenty of practice. The building has a security guard when you enter it on the ground floor, so be able to run to the building in case of issues. The interior of the building is safe, and if you are working into the night, I'd ask for escort to the train station if you need to get there after dark.

If you stay right by...and I mean RIGHT BY campus, you'll be fine. Outside of the Temple Bubble are a places you don't want to venture into. One is literally called the Badlands. Avoid Kensington/Juniata. Kenzo is no joke. Seriously. Good news is that pretty much all of the trains from the Northern suburbs roll right on by Temple U. How long of a commute would you be comfortable with?

Thank you all very much! Wish I knew all of this before I accepted the offer, but hey I'll take what I can get. I'd really want nothing more than a 20 minute commute. I won't be bringing my car, so I'll be using public transportation. Never used a subway before so I guess that's something I'd have to get use to. I've lived in the suburbs my entire life so this is going to take some getting used too :( I was also hoping pharmacy students lived close to each other, or even shared the same unit but I guess that's not the case with this school :(

Look in Montgomery County near the Jenkintown, Elkins Park or Melsrose Park Train Stations.... 15 minute train ride to school....

How expensive are apartments down that way? If you can find an affordable one, that might be a good option. Manayunk/Roxborough might be good options, too.

To brighten up a bit, Temple is a very solid school with a great training reputation. If anything, Temple's cleaned up a bit from the 1980s where you could see anything on Broad Street. The campus security is quite professional and has no problems with escorting due to knowing the area themselves. If you run into Doukas, ask him about how to protect your children from poisoning, the Doukas way.

My impression is that those are 15 minutes to the main campus, not the pharmacy school. Then you'd have to take the subway to the pharmacy school (unless the pharmacy school provides some sort of a shuttle).

You get off at Wayne Junction and walk a few blocks..... Or take the train to Fern Rock and get subway from there....
