Is anyboby take this into consideration when applying? My brother goes to NYUCD (2nd year student) and I am kinda worried about him. He blows it off and says if it happens it happens and let fate take its path. I know they have been saying Miami, Washington D.C, New York, Chicago...essentially the big cities are on the hit list. This recent article really worried me. Anyone else in a similar situation going to a major city for dental school or have family there?

I think your brothers right. You cant really go around living scared and worried about terrorists. I live in Queens but used to work downtown and have family and friends that work there and we all have the same opinion as your brother.

I know I'm going to get flamed for saying this...but I just don't think terrorists should be accepted to dental schools.

I understand your concern over the recen spat of terror alterts. I too have friends and family in many of those places, and chances are I will be going to school in one next year as well. Such high profile and internationally known cities as New York and Washington D.C. certainly make for targets of terrorism, but like all major urban areas there are many other risks as well. Some of these include rape, physical assault, robbery, car jacking and theft, and so on, not to mention dangers from natural disasters such as earthquakes (hello, California!). This argument can even be used to arrive at the conclusion that the simple act of stepping out your front door is a dangerous act all in itself. Withg that said, if the English can suffer and work past the IRA and if the French and Spanish can manage with the ETA then I too can move on with my life and work towards my goals. For me, personally, I subscribe to your brother's mantra. Though I get concerned with such reports, I refuse to let them manage and dictate my future. Your concern over your brother is natural. To answer your question, no, I did not factor vague terrorist warnings into my choice of dental schools.

Haha! Would one list 'terrorism' under the heading of 'extra-curricular activities'?

I really wouldn't worry about it. This is the politics of fear. Fear the people of this country to the point that they will approve any military action the government approves of. What we need to do is to search for the root causes of terrorism: that being famine, hunger, and disease

ur bro is right. U cant live in fear of the uncertain. If its ur time to go then its ur time to go. True u can die from a terrorist attack, but u can also die from West Nile virus (mosquitos), car accident, etc...

Just live ur life and pursue ur dreams. It natural to be anxious and worried, but there's nothing u can do. People die in small cities all the time; just live ur life and dont let the craziness around u change how u live.

U dont wanna be 93 and think about all the "risks" u avoided to be safe and then be depressed. Plus its gonna suck to die at 93 anyways on a ventilator with tubes and crap; and ur back hurts and u got hypertension and Alzheimers u feelin what im saying?

Laugh at death man like that dude in that movie Gladiator; man u need to rent that **** before u go to dental school in NYC. itll pump u up.

holler at yo boy

...So why are you going to dental school in the U.S.?......

I decided to choose a profession that 1000 other people in Canada want as well, but the problem is that Canada doesnt need 1000 new dentists due to the fact that it has a population 1/8 of the US, so i had to look elsewhere for my education.....I choose the US cause I have a greencard and thus can get cheap govt loans.....and also, US and Canadian degrees are both valid across both borders due to an agreement by the ADA and CDA....so that makes coming back home a piece of cake (compared to if I went to dental school in Australia or the UK)

With that in mind, I have all intentions to move back to Canada and practice and take the paycut so me, my wife and most importantly my children wont have to deal with the very $hit that this thread deals with.....Have a happy Orange Alert 👍

First time I've heard Miami thrown around with NYC, DC, etc. Doesn't al Queda know that no real business gets done in Miami? Last time I checked, I don't think Bin Laden cares about Cubans sipping coffee in front of Ventanas on calle ocho 🙂

That is unless he secretly has a thing for Castro... then he's got a reason to target Cubans.

tee hee.... just a little sarcasm ok??

-Mike
P.S. Ft. Lauderdale is better 🙂

I heard of Miami and Ft. Laud as targets because they are major ports, therefore easier to slip stuff in.

I actually have heard Miami a number of times...oh well I don't care

I think the President should know about this topic.

Haven't they all been exported to Iraq?...
No I'm pretty sure they stay at the homeland. Military has been exported to Iraq (Marines, Army, Navy, etc and all reserve units on rotation).

Touch?. Learn something new everyday. I guess they've got anyone and everyone they can shipped over there.

All the things the military could need.... don't you people think it will be a set-back for them to know about "terrorists and dental school"?

Come to think of it... I think there should be a military personnel in the adcoms during the interview... anything odd about the applicant should lead to Interrogation. 😀

EXACTLY!

Terrorism is a tactic of violence that targets civilians, with the objective of forcing an enemy to favorable terms, by creating fear, demoralization, or political discord in the attacked population.

IMO: If we, as civilians, do not give into this *fear*, then we have taken the first step in combating terrorism.
