For those of you applying in Texas this year, whats the deal on question #43 (chronology of activities)?

It asks you to list significant activities you've been involved in, but does that include stuff like extracurriculars or volunteer activities or just school and work? The example they gave listed only stuff on work, military, and school.

They also have a separate section to deal with these issues so I'm not sure what the point of this question is. It seems to be asking for redundant info.

Anybody enlighten me on this?

They had the same question on it last year. I mentioned my trips to Hawaii and DC. I was asked by one interviewer if I was being sarcastic. I told him that those actually were major events in my life that I enjoyed and thought I would share.
I do not think it is really important. Honestly, only one of the people who interviewed me had actually read over my application before the interview (the guy I mentioned). Most of them just skim it during the interview.

Thanks socialist...

I have another question now.

I will copy directly from the application:

"List extracurricular, community or significant leisure time activities participated in while in college and to the present. Include non-medical volunteer efforts. Indicate the approximate hours per week or month you spent in each activity."

I'm assuming this means list ONLY those activities which you are presently participating in? There are a couple of activities that I worked on for about 2 years but am no longer involved with. I guess I'll just have to leave them off the app, since theres really no where else to put them unless you want to mention them in the personal statement.

On my app, I listed all extracurriculars under that question, not just ones that I was still in. I never had any problems with that.

I think this is an excellent question. Though it may seem redundant, they are asking for any significant events to YOU. This means they will gauge what you consider important in your life and experiences from what you write. I spent a great deal of time on this section, trying to write what was most moving, challenging, rewarding for me rather than my most impressive extracurriculars. I wouldn't repeat information, but have some fun with this section. I think it allows you to paint a better picture of yourself than can be learned from a list of your extracurriculars. Good luck! 🙂

I listed all of my travel and my significant activities (and extra-curiculars) during college and after. I think they just want to see what you have been doing with your time that does not show up in the activities section. Take every opportunity to say as much about yourself as you can. 😀

I just answered with what Id been doing either as a job or as school - I think they just want to know about your time - for example, something like this:

6/97-7/97: worked in retail
8/97: traveled to England
8/97-12/97: attended college
1/98: Interned at a startup .com
2/98-5/98: attended college
6/98-8/98: attended a different college
...
6/99-8/99: research assistant at TCOM
etc...

then you talk about your extracurrics in a different question. And I agree with the others - list ALL the ones you've been involved with, whether or not you're currently doing them. Just be sure to give dates.

good luck!
