I'm wondering which medical schools have a reputation for highly valuing TFA corps members. I've seen this list, which shows the schools that grant two-year deferrals for TFA, but I'm wondering if this correlates also to admissions preferences.

Based on a search of MDApplicants, it seems that many TFA applicants were accepted to Tulane...is this the case at any other schools?

Thanks.

My friend did TFA somewhere in Manhattan and he got into Mt. Sinai with a 35 MCAT. Not sure about his GPA.

According to LizzyM, if you want to do TFA do it but don't apply for med school. Med schools don't like when you're not ready to matriculate there the year they accept you for.

I think 2 year deferrals are rare. And a 1 year deferral is out of question: If TFA is a 2 year requirement, then why would you do it just for a year? At that point, you're just being unethical. You should do TFA if you want to, but don't apply for med schools for that year. Just my 2 cents.

Edit: Just looked at your link. Did not know that such programs existed! Idk then. Disregard my post I guess. Sorry!

Not sure but Tulane has a section on their secondary where they specifically ask whether you participated in organized gap year programs like TFA, AmeriCorp, PeaceCorp, etc. They really seem to value that.

Good to know! But, wouldn't at that point they would be expecting applicants to have completed the program and not asking for a deferral once they get in? Just curious

Well yeah. Most students that list those programs have either completed it or are in the last year of their commitment. Don't ever list them or anything else where you can't complete the full commitment as future activities.

Sorry...should have clarified-- I'm a second-year corps member. I'm applying this cycle, and will be finished with my 2-year commitment next year when I (hopefully) matriculate.

Oh great! Haha pretty synonymous to your username, huh? Well, flatearth's first comment definitely applies to you. Definitely keep Tulane in mind then!

An adcom actually encouraged my friend to apply even though he was interested in TFA. If accepted, he would simply defer and complete the second year of his TFA commitment. Deferring isn't that big of a deal if you have a legitimate reason, at least to my limited knowledge.
