So here is a questions that you'll all be asked:

Why did you choose an osteopathic school over an allopathic school?

Please post your response, as this is interesting to all of us future DOs as well.

I seriously have nothing concrete... it's just what I want to do. What about you guys?

J

ummm.......that question was never asked to me!!!

OK- thanks for your help.

Most of the interviews I've heard about did ask though. If you don't have an answer, then nevermind posting.

Thanks,
J

I was never asked that question either (and I interviewed at quite a few DO and MD schools). I think a more appropriate question would be, "why are you interested in osteopathy?" or "what was your motivation for applying to osteopathic schools?"

What is important, is that you are able to explain your desire to attend an osteopathic school. I think they like to hear that you are well informed about the profession and that you aren't just regurgitating what you read on the AOA website.

Good luck~

OnMyWayThere,

The answer to the question, of course, will be different for each individual.

There are many overlaps between osteopathic and allopathic medicine, therefore, many people apply to both types of schools.

Here was some of my reasoning for choosing Osteopathic Medicine:

1. Osteopathic medicine's push for preventative health.

2. Osteopathics use of OMM as additonal treatment resourses.

3. Osteopathic holistic approach towards patients.

4. Osteopathic schools' higher acceptance rate for non-trad students.

Many of my reasons were in line with my prior work experience and volunteer experiences. Most schools will not have you justify whyyou chose one type of medicine over the other. The schools want to know if you have done some research on why medicine is for you.

Good luck.

OnMyWayThere,

My experience applying to school was quite different from the situation you're describing. I applied to both osteo and allo, and I was subsequently accepted into both. I chose osteo for various reasons... make sure that you can articulate why osteopathic training is a good fit for you. In retrospect, I was never asked by either type of program why I chose one over the other. But I was questioned about my motives for applying to each individual school. Know those things; be able to succintly and intelligently convey who you are to the adcoms. Good luck in your endeavor!

I had a group interview with SEVEN other students in the room. Each of use was asked three questions by a panel and NONE of the students in the room got asked that question.

Many were asked "why osteopathy?" but NOT "why this over that."

now i don't feel so bad for posting that. I think OnMyWayThere was trying to flame me for my post. And to think that I almost felt bad for trying to post some insight. 😀 😀

I never got asked that question either, and no one I have asked in my whole class. I was asked why osteopathy? Regards.

OK, I guess the post was not clear. The big question is, why Osteopathy?

I wrote it that way assuming that's what the interviewer's ultimate goal is... to find out why this over that. I guess the nicer way to ask that is, Why Osteopathy?

To answer your question, I had a remotely similar question during the interview. The interviewer sae that I applied to both allo and osteo on my app and asked that if I got accepted to both where would I go. Of course, my response was that I would attend this (the one interviewed me) school and basically I just brought the interviewer back to my original statement of why I want to be a doc. hope this helps
