Has anyone read "The DO's" by Norman Gevitz? It is an excellent book describing the founding of osteopathy, what it encompasses, and how it fits into society today. To anyone out there still not quite sure about the differences between allopathy and osteopathy or simply to the skeptics, this is definately recommended reading!

I agree, this is a must read before you interview at a DO school.

Yeah.. I think they should inforce a knowledge test on this book before the actually interviewing. It is a good read and makes things clear.

Im reading it right now and it is great !! 🙂
although i read it on my commute (when i get a seat) so its going rather slowly, but it offers excellent insight as to the history of osteopathic medicine in america and its whole philosophy. if anyone's a speed reader and wants to fill me in, please feel free to PM me!

Indeed, it is very thorough on the history of osteopathy and osteopathic medicine in America. I wish he would write a new chapter for the new printings of the book. It looks like the book was written some time in the early 80s, and a great deal has changed since then.

There's a new edition out now. It brings osteopathy right up to the present-day. It was required reading before we started at OU-COM.

Is it the same title? I just purchased the book from Amazon a few weeks ago and read it through but it was only up until the 80s. Where can I get the updated version?

The DOs: Osteopathic Medicine in America, second edition

I ordered mine directly from the publisher. We got a discount b/c it was part of our required reading. Anyway, here is the info for anyone else who wants the new edition.

www.press.jhu.edu
ISBN: 0-8018-7834-9

You might also check eBay. There's probably a lot of new OU-COMers trying to get rid of them now. LOL

I couldn't find any on Ebay, but barnesandnoble.com had paperback for $20, 20%off list. A shipping cost will be added. I'm trying to find one locally. There is none in the local library systems 👎 .

Order it on amazon.. sometimes if the cost is above $$ than shipping is free (ask your spouse or friend if they need something and order it together... Xmass shopping sure why not).

I got the hard cover.. since I will have it for the rest of my life.

If you are lucky willow will sell you her SIGNED copy LOL

Are you kidding?? Do you know how many women I had to knock out of the way to get that autograph? I'm not selling it. I sleep with it under my pillow......

😍

Oh dear, sometimes i scare myself. You are soooo getting your butt kicked for that one!

It's required reading at DMU-COM for 1st years. Agreed, good read.

Since I couldn't find one in Dallas, I ordered it last night from barnes and noble. The second edition is important for the latest updates. Thanks for the info gang.

Hello,

I'm about to order the book, The DO's. Is the 2004 edition better than the 1991 edition for those of you who are familiar with both?

Thanks

I think reading back on this thread, someone said that the 2004 edition updates the current history whereas the older edition did not. Thus, it would probably be a good investment to get the new edition.

20 bucks at B&N
