Ya know, it never ceases to amaze me just how insecure SOME caucasions are.:scared:
There are 52 dental schools. FIFTY-TWO!Yes ladies and gentleman, thats a Five and a Two.And of these 52 dental schools, there are only 2,not 22,but a measily 2,that happen to be sensitive enough to focus on the needs of the under-represented population.
With having that been said, the other 50 claim to be ''equal opportunist'' however this is FAR from true.👎
When I interviewed at Harvard,I was the ONLY black candidate that interviewed that day🙁. The halls of harvard are filled with white faces!I had the very SAME experience at Tufts and Case-Western in Ohio.Does this mean that Harvard,Case and Tufts are racist institutions because thier schools are DOMINATED by white people? 😕
To some, the answer maybe yes👍,and for others, the answer is no👎.But whatever the case maybe, this is America, and the wonderful thing about America is that it offers something for everyone,so that no one is left behind.
The bottomline is that you should apply to the institution that best supports you and your personal needs:idea:. If you think that Meharry is doing civic injustice to you,+pity+THEN SIMPLY DON'T APPLY!!!YOU HAVE 51 OTHER CHOICES!:meanie:

people that get pissed off at meharry are just envious because some minorities actually get a break after having a tough life. Sure anyone can have a tough life, but dealing with racism is something that white folk never have to deal with, not to mention all the benefits you cash in when you are white. A lot of white people seems to have selective memory when it comes down to how fortunate they are.

do black students benefit from meharry? yes

do white people benefit from being white? HELL YES. People seem to forget this!

Sorry my friend. There was one (out of 13 or 14) black interviewee alongside me at my UNLV interview and 4 (out of 6) at my Howard interview. Boggles my mind that the numbers are so low. But you can see in almost every Bio/Chem/whatever undergrad program that blacks are not represented well in students getting to this level. I wish it were different. HECK, how many native Americans did you see in the halls of Case, Harvard, or even Meharry. I bet none. The fact is that the non-black/Mexican/native American applicant feels cheated out of an opportunity to continue their education because 2 (yes, only 2) schools choose to fight the cause. I agree that those 2 schools should try to "help" underrepresented students but I don't think you can be blind to the fact that those same underrepresented students do take away seats from well overqualified students. Its a large issue. The person who ever says anything about those 2 colleges doesn't understand the big picture of the underrepresented applicant but oh well. You get in to a school, you get through school, you make a difference to those underrepresented students in your community somehow and hopefully influence more of those kinds of students to get into the field.

First, there are actually 56 dental schools; not 52. Of the 56, I can't testify to which "support" the underprivlidged.

I believe that you get what you work for and what you deserve. Because you are white or black or blue shouldn't matter where you go in life. On the other hand, the products of your efforts; ie. grades, dat, etc..; do matter. Take a look at Meharry's GPA. Ouch? Now take a look at Harvards. Big difference huh? You see, the truth of it is maybe you just couldn't make the cut via Harvard's educational standards. However, over at Meherray's as long as that first digit on your GPA is a 3 your golden.

It's quite obvious that Meharry's favors blacks. I'm not racist but I do have a huge problem with minorities that bitc* about being targets or racism and discrimination and then exemplify their own race. By this I'm speaking of Meharry's, any "Black" scholarship fund, KSU "Black" Student Union --> wtf? Seriously, let's make a "white" club just like all the African Americans have and see what goes down. Blacks seperate themselves and then want to make a big deal about it when we happen to mention the trend of Meharry's falling gpa and rising minority enrollment; despite the fact that many over-qualified whites are being denied admittance. It should come down to academics vs academics.

I don't care if your black and you shouldn't care if I'm white but when there's an African American that get's accepted into dental school with a 2.85 GPA and a caucasian with a 3.4 GPA gets denied at the same school, ya, there's something wrong there.

Gah, I'm going to get burned for saying this on here. 😎

Ive seen people with stellar gpa and dat scores get turned down from meharry on predents.com.

The point is this...if you are white, dont expect yourself to get in even with decent grades. I plan to apply to meharry and I'm a minority. i'm not black/ white but Im a visible ethnic minority. If I don't get in sucks but if I do then awesome. Just move on with your life and dont dwell on these things.

its got nothing to do with race guy, just let your stats and personality get you in, there should be no advantage or disadvantage with race, if there is any favoritism its unfair to the other

Obviously you don't understand yet (Freshman?) that GPA doesn't count for everything. Schools names don't make for everything (Harvard). There are white clubs everywhere (almost every friggin fraternity out there!). Its never going to be solely about academics, thats why you do those volunteer/research/community/shadow/school club/etc. hours. If you honestly feel no remorse about the non-existent black dental student population you're pretty much heartless. It's saddening to see so many schools with 0 (DID YOU CATCH THAT, 0 BLACK STUDENTS) in their classes. I wish the competition was even for every dental seat in all 56 schools (wait, 54 excluding Howard and Meharry...what jerks right?) but it's never been equal. Just ask the women?

I know it's more than GPA but didn't feel this needed to be mentioned?? Maybe so, I'll try to get that done for you next time.

I guess I don't have a heart because I feel no remorse for the "non-existent black dental student."

Race should not be an issue; it needs to come down to GPA, DAT, (and I will mention it for you "stdmufin," EC's, Shadowing, & CS). If it comes down to one applicant being more qualified than the other than so be it; may the best man win. Being black shouldn't get you a special coupon to use at dental school admission nor should whites be given preference.

May the best man win.

It's sad but the best man is usually white. I guess it comes down to how bad do you want it.

This is the dumbest thread I have ever read.

Great job there Choco Doc on starting another racially charged thread. Why is it always about race?

I get the feeling that you want the Meharry thing to be a non-issue, but by posting this you are just making it more of an issue.

The race/affirmative action issue is way more complex than it is made out to be on SDN and there are no easy answers to the social problems in our Country. But, I do believe that there continues to be an ever-growing divide between all races, and the blame for it cannot be given to any particular race. We are probably all responsible. I like what a fellow named Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."

It is obvious that historically black colleges promote unity among those students that attend them, but is it the best way to promote "mutuality" between races? The problems due to racial issues should be solved by a unified effort, but it seems that the current issues are only increasing the division between groups.

give every advantage to a minority family and you'll see how their children 'struggle' to get into dental school.

The point is, people are not equal when it comes down to how funded they are or even how much knowledge they possess about getting in. A good majority of the people I know that get into med/dent are not brilliant; they usually have a parent or a family member that's coaching them on how to get in. That's a huge advantage over another with no guidance whatsoever. It just so happens that there arent many black doctors and dentists. Hell, I've never even seen a black dentist in the flesh

To the nonblacks thats complaining about meharry and howard. If you came from a disadvantage background and aadsas application had a checkbox for it, would you use it knowing that it will get you in 100%? I know that it sucks that its to their advantage but you all know that you would use it too. The only person to really blame is yourself for not having the scores to really compete when you knew what grades you needed when you started your college career. For me, I'm asian. I have it worse since I'm not even considered a minority and seen as a white applicant. Heck, even the word Caucasian has the word asian in it. hahahaha At the end of the day, I just try to see how I can improve my application b/c complaining about it wont change anything.

Financial Aid?? Grants?? <-- Grants x10 for minorities!

Guidance: Pre-health advisors, dentists, dental school admission staff, sdn.

There's plenty of resources for whoever wants to use them.

One name: Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I'm sure his family got him where he is?

Is i just me or didn't we just have this damn conversation about Meharry? :beat: we had like 360+ posts........ can we get off the race topic..... life isn't fair so get over it....

The whole race issue needs to stop. Some things in life are just not fair. The same thing happens when people are accepted because they have connections to the school (i.e. family member attended said school, family member donated x amount of money, or they know someone who knows someone on the admissions committee). This isn't "fair" either, but yet no one is complaining about that. Fact of the matter is, there is an infinite number of similar scenarios that happen all the time (i.e. job interviews, job promotions, athletic scholarships, academic scholarship, etc.) Take care of yourself, and don't worry about anything else. You can't control things that you have no control over. And have you ever thought that maybe these students with outstanding stats can't hold a conversation in an interview? Maybe they are cocky? Maybe they had a poor LOR? There are so many factors that play into getting accepted besides GPA and DAT scores, and could it be (just maybe) that some of these individuals have more to the application than a GPA and DAT score? I say yes. And as someone else mentioned, if you don't like the fact that there are schools who accept a large number of minorities, then you don't have to apply. And also, to one of the posters above... many schools don't have African Americans (not because they are under-qualified) but because of the low number of African Americans applying to dental school. When it is all said and done (more often than not) schools are accepting the most qualified, well-rounded individuals who they believe will succeed in their program... and from what I can tell, despite the "I can't believe a school can get away with a 15AA"... Meharry is graduating competent dentists who are scoring well on the boards, which by the way... some of those students are scoring higher on the boards than others at different schools that do not "cater" to the minority population... does that make those students who aren't scoring as well on the boards any less qualified?

what a joke, this is such garbage, give it a damn rest, what are you trying to prove or who are you trying to influence by posting this trash?

I'm glad it never ceases to amaze you how insecure some caucasians are (which is true) but look in the damn mirror

chocolate doc,

Why don't you put white/caucasian on your application and see how far you get? Are you afraid people won't accept you because you don't have your "give-me-a-free-ride-through-life-card"?

Money says if an all Asian school was opened, you would be B@tching along with everyone else because you couldn't get in. Cry me a river. You're black, you have an easy ride with in life whatever educational pursuits you want to pursue.

Get over it. Let it Fing go.

Is i just me or didn't we just have this damn conversation about Meharry? :beat: we had like 360+ posts........ can we get off the race topic..... life isn't fair so get over it....

100% true.... this problem will never be solved so that everyone is happy... i do know one thing though... i hate those "black/indian/whatever clubs" in colleges that are so racist. If people want to be equal then they should eliminate these types of groups... i feel that these groups harbor hate and animosity and just keep the race issue a factor.

And regarding someone elses post.... why would you be heartless if you did not care about the black dental student? most people only care about themselves anyways. To be honest... I do not care about such a issue...nor am I heartless.... there is nothing that I can do about this problem nor any of us.... this has to do with politics and the types of lives people live as children and while learning in high school. Letting in a couple of black dental students in each school is not going to fix any of the major race/poverty problems in the US

It sounds like the only school he got into was Meharry, so , therefore, he is trying to defend his new school.

Meharry isn't the best school, WE ALREADY KNOW, but please let it go.

Now this is the kid who is getting free passes and money for 100% no reason..... the rich noncity black that lives a white kid life but still gets aid even though he does not need it.... this goes back to my theory about how AfirAction should be by where you live( rich/ghetto/rural) to determine who needs aid and help getting in... not the color of the skin

No reason? I'm sorry I bust my a$$ twice a day, everyday on the field or in the gym and then go to class and maintain an excellent gpa. Go cry yourself to sleep.

In the words of some "inner city" kids I heard today, "b!tch, you don't know me!"

Would you feel the same way with all the black people that accused Denny's restaurants of discrimination? Hey, there's plenty of other restaurants to eat at, if you don't like the way Denny's treats black people, than eat somewhere else! Your logic, right?

I think people are forgetting the point chocolate doc is trying to say. "But whatever the case maybe, this is America, and the wonderful thing about America is that it offers something for everyone,so that no one is left behind." Theres enough for everyone. hey chocolate doc, if anyone rips on you for getting into meharry or howard due to the color of your skin, it doesnt really matter what they say cuz youre already in. hahaha thats all that matters!!!

BAM!!! Money shot right in her eye!!!

And no, I wouldn't trade my skin color, because the chicks I'm into don't like black guys. However, the "free ride" benefits sound great!

Two wrongs don't make a right! People, of all colors, seem to forget this.

all this racism is making me wanna hate my own people. SCREW ALL ASIANS!!!!

the chicks I'm into don't like black guys.

Ha! That's what she said....

And just as you won't ever know for 1 second what it's like to be black, I won't ever know what it's like to be whatever you are...so we are only going to understand each other to a certain extent. Oh well oh well

Ok I will play this game. Let me hear one black person say they have no problem if there was a dental school that had an official policy of accepting whites over much more qualified blacks.....still waiting..... Exactly, it would be shut down INSTANTLY and sued for every cent that ever existed. Jessie Jackson would be on every tv network and dentistry as a profession would be lucky to survive.

this guy has the right idea......reverse discrimination!
