In late January, South Korean health officials summoned representatives from more than 20 medical companies from their lunar New Year celebrations to a conference room tucked inside Seoul’s busy train station.
One of the country’s top infectious disease officials delivered an urgent message: South Korea needed an effective test immediately to detect the novel coronavirus, then running rampant in China. He promised the companies swift regulatory approval.

Though there were only four known cases in South Korea at that point, “we were very nervous. We believed that it could develop into a pandemic,” one attendee, Lee Sang-won, an infectious diseases expert at the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told Reuters.

“We acted like an army,” he said.

A week after the Jan. 27 meeting, South Korea’s CDC approved one company’s diagnostic test. Another company soon followed. By the end of February, South Korea was making headlines around the world for its drive-through screening centers and ability to test thousands of people daily.

South Korea’s swift action stands in stark contrast to what has transpired in the United States. Seven weeks after the train station meeting, the Koreans have tested well over 290,000 people and identified over 8,000 infections. New cases are falling off: Ninety-three were reported Wednesday, down from a daily peak of 909 two weeks earlier.

The United States, whose first case was detected the same day as South Korea’s, is not even close to meeting demand for testing. About 60,000 tests have been run by public and private labs in a country of 330 million, federal officials said Tuesday...

while south korea did a great job you have to keep in mind the population difference...USA is a population of 350 million while south korea is 50 million, while california alone is around 40 million...its an apples to oranges comparison

Agree with the differences in population but the total number of tests performed is vastly different as well.
USA could have been better prepared, or had a faster response time but at this point it is what it is.
Pretty soon, it seems, people will be told its OK to go back to work cos God forbid the stocks takes a hit and we will likely then be in this mess for even longer.

Also South Korea is taking authoritarian measures that wouldn’t fly here due to constitutional liberties. In SK, if you’re sick or rest positive, they force you to quarantine in a designated hotel/apartment complex

None of y'all replies ^ explain the number of daily COVID-19 cases of 50k vs 100 tho.

Actually, I think this one does quite well:

You're having people attack store employees over just being asked to wear a mask. How do you think US citizens would react if they weren't allowed to leave their homes?

NY-NJ-CT are enforcing 14 days quarantine if you have traveled to certain states. I believe the list is as long as ~30 states. I know it's nothing compared to Korea's but their's is for actually confirmed Pos Pts. so wouldn't be a fair comparison. Nonetheless, we are not comparing 100 vs 1000 cases. Like I mentioned, 100 (+ it's been far under 100 nationally and single digit local infection for past couple months) vs 50k+. @TAVR4life mentioned about the population difference of 330Mil vs 50Mil but you gotta think about the population density too. Korea is ~100 times smaller than the US, about size of the state of Indiana. Their bullet train can get you from one end to the other end in <2 hrs.

And Koreans actually attack the business owners/workers for asking for wearing their masks. They just got no guns avail to gen pop. Off topic but thinking about them having guns like us would be crazy when you think about 90% of their adult males are or have been conscripted and did 2+ years of regular military training.
