The following is an actual call to an admissions office:

Ring...ring...ring...ring...ring...ring...ring...ring...ring....

--"Admissions, how can I help?" Sarcastic, burnt out tone

--"Hi, I just need to check on the status of my application! My file has been complete since-"

--"I'm sorry, what's your name, please?"

--"My name is ********(name deleted for privacy purposes)"

--"Thank you. One moment please....(long pause)...What program?"

--"The Osteopathic Program."

--"One moment please." "One more second." You said the OSTEOPATHIC program?"

--"Yes."

--"One moment."(longer pause)

--"Hello?"

--"Okay. What was your question?"

--"I just need to check the status of my application."

--"Have you filled out an AACOMAS application? I can give you their number, if you need it. They're really the people you need to contact. The number is 301-968-..."

--"I've already completed the AACOMAS application and the secondary. I just need to know if my file has been considered yet. I haven't heard anything from the College in about two months."

--"Have you checked our website?"

--"Yes, but-"

--"Well our website is where you need to go to do an application status check."

--"Yes, I know that, but all it says is that my file is 'complete'. It doesn't say if I have been considered for an interview, or rejected, or-"

--"I can't discuss that information on the phone, but if you'll just go to our website at www.-"

--"Look. I JUST need to know if I've been rejected yet or if I'm on the hold pile, or-"

--"All of that information is on our website."

--"You say on the website if you've been rejected or on hold?"

--"No."

--"So can YOU tell me which pile it's currently in? I just need to know if-"

--"What is your student ID?"

--"It's xxx-xx-xxxx."

--"One second please. I'm going to put you on hold."

(long pause)

--"Okay. It says that we've received your AACOMAS and supplementary application, and your file is currently under review."

--"What does 'under review' mean?"

--"It means that your file is being looked at, and a decision has not been made."

--"But you've had my application since July, and it's October now, and I wanted to know-"

--"I can't give you any information over the phone right now. The easiest way to get a hold of us is via email. The address is [email protected]."

--"But I'm on the phone with you NOW."

--"I'm sorry, but the easiest way to get a hold of us is via email. Once your file has been considered, you'll be hearing from us. It should be in a few weeks."

--"Will that be via USPS or email?"

--"We will either contact you through paper mail or email."

--"Well, I know of a few people with worse statistics than mine who were contacted for an interview a month ago, and my file has been complete since before theirs. Is there something that I can do to expedite the process?"

--"I don't know what other people are doing, sir. Maybe we haven't received all of your letters of recommendation yet."

--"But you said my file was completed."

--"Yes, we received the SECONDARY, but have you sent in the letters of recommendation? One needs to be from a physician, and we also require two from science faculty members. Do you have internet access?"

--"Yes..."

--"You can check the status of your file on our website, then. Is there anything else I can help you with?"

--"I guess not. Thank you. (groan)

--"Thank you for calling! By the way, we're ENORMOUS TOOLS!"

What a process!

Why yes! Except someone from the school called me and left a message on my answering machine stating that it was in regards to my application. I got the same "yes, I know I have to answer the phone but I know it's just you applicants with the same question" tone when the person answered. When I asked for the person who called me, I was told she had not come in. Long conversation short:

Person: "Do you want to leave a message?"
Me: "Yes, my name is ____. *Rep's name* called me yesterday and left a message on my machine in regards to my application so I was just returning the call."
Person: "Are you an applicant?"
Me: "Yes."
P: "Osteopathic school"
M: "Yes"
P: "Hold on for a few moments."
M: "ok, thanks"
(pause of silence)
P: "Ok, now what was your question?"

Actually, that was a long summary. But anyways, I had to explain to the person the whole situation again and that I did not know what I was calling in regards to besides my application since they had called me.

After that experience, it made me wonder if the admissions had any reflect as to what the school is like.

I called again that afternoon but I won't go into that. 😀

I haven't really experienced anything to that extent, but I've called a few colleges and I'll ask them about the status of my application and I keep hearing "It's under review". So I just say "Thank you" and hang up. Although my primary was complete in July and my secondary soon thereafter, and my stats are decent IMO.

I have also asked when the admissions committee meets and they won't tell me, they just ask for my ID number and then tell me the status of my application.

For some reason, these accounts sound like Nova

hmmm, oh well... best wishes guys

That's so funny!!! That's EXACTLY what I was thinking! I talked to a lady there once or twice last year and she all but hung up on me. She dripped contempt, for sure.

that has happened to me at nova.. they said completed but then told was missing a letter.. its been in review since july..

Receptionist: NYCOM, can I help you?
Me: Good afternoon. I had a question about my application.
Receptionist: Uh-huh. We'll contact you, just like we said in the letter.
Me: Right, I understand. The letter stated that I'd be contacted with a secondary application -
Receptionist: (cuts me off) - no, it said we'd contact you if you qualify for a secondary application
Me: Right, so I was wondering -
Receptionist: (cuts me off again) - Starting in November
Me: (annoyed) So as I was saying before you cut me off, the letter which was sent did not explicitly state whether you wanted letters of recommendation or not. Most schools want them with the secondary, but would you like them sent prior to that?
Receptionist: (realizing her mistake) Yea, send em in.

Jeez!

That's why I hate to call. I much prefer emailing and I find that I get very quick responses.

I feel your pain from calling NYCOM. About a month ago, I called to make sure they received an update that had been mailed. After looking for my file for a few minutes, the person who answered came back on the line and said "Did you submit a primary application?" I said yes. She said "are you sure" I told her that I had received a confirmation letter, so she confidently told me "then we must have it! I'll try to find it again; call back on Friday." So I said "You're making me a little nervous!" She assured me that everything was under control...

I called back, they located the file, it didn't have the update, so I faxed it. No big deal in the end, but they made me sweat a little!

Has anyone had a problem with the reps misplacing your secondary (but the check was found and copied, of course!!) and telling you they'll call you back, but instead you call them back to see what's up and they're like, "Oh yeah, we found it in someone else's file. We'll process your application now." Yep, that happened to me with OU-COM. Talk about disorganized!!!

KCOM misplaced one of my LOR. I emailed them and asked about it and they found it in someone elses file. I think it can happen anywhere. They fixed it quickly.
