hi guys, i saw this on a MSN Encarta article:

"Duke University and the University of Michigan's dental school are among other schools distributing coursework-related podcasts on campus through iTunes."

I was wondering if eventually everyone is going to follow suit and go "book-less"... I know some schools have DVD curriculums already. Any opinions about whether or not this will eventually happen?

We have the books on DVD. Don't like them. We also have all of our materials lectures on the web so you can look at the ppt and hear the teacher's pre-recorded lecture that accompanies it.

this probably sounds dumb, but you even go to class (lectures), in this case? 😱

are there any UM d-school students out there that could elaborate a little more on this subject?

The better question is...are there any DUKE dental students out there?

In the case where the lecture is online for materials, there isn't a real lecture in class. You learn the material via the web for the test.

In dental school, we pretty much did it all via books, lectures and scantron tests.

In medical school, we're completely wireless...Books are recommended for some classes, lectures are everyday if you choose to go, BUT all lectures are transcribed and audio taped AND powerpoints are on the web. Also, exams are on a secure web server that we log into from anywhere and we take them that way (NO MORE SCANTRONS) and we get our grades back once we submit our answers. Isn't technology great. Oh yeah, who thinks Duke has a dental school?

i realize that the way in which the article was written, it looks like they're sayin duke has a d-school too, lol. but anyways i think they meant students at duke<-- in general, and also students at UM d-school. and, that set up that you were talkin about at the med school you went to sounds pretty nifty, i do say so myself 👍

You are misunderstanding the podcast idea. Some of our lectures are recorded and we can listen to the audio on ipods if we want. We are NOT bookless. We still have all our texts in paper form, no DVD's at umich d-school as of yet.

I was left wondering the same thing. Apparently they have books on CD, wherever they are.

Here at Penn there is a tech savy, proMac professor in the micro department that made all of his PowerPoints available for the new video iPods (in addition to the regular online versions as well). I don't know if students actually used them in that format, but it was a neat idea.

No problem, glad I could clear it up for you. 🙂
