I am really interested in becoming a dermatologist, I enjoy almost everything it seems to offer. However, I know that there are more and more students wanting to go into Dermatology for the work hours and monetary reasons. Is the field becoming more flooded with docs, or is it just more competitive (to get the available residencies)? If I am able to go into Dermatology will I be able to find a job (~12 years from now)? and if so, will it be a job which enables me to pay back debt, or will the market be so flooded that I won't be able to find an average paying dermatology job (~$308k)? I am also interested in surgery, would that be a more future-proof option, or am I just anxious?

The market can't get flooded because of the limited number of Derm residencies. If you don't do a Derm residency, you can't be a dermatologist (unless you use one of the 2 backdoor ways through AOA FM, which might not exist for long, or Path). For the foreseeable future there will be jobs.

That said, realize that big cities in the coasts are saturated when it comes to most specialists, so it'll likely take you some time to get a job (or you might have to settle for a lower paying job) if you are restricting your options to very specific big cities on the coasts.

The future is so bright it hurts. Just don't count your chickens before they hatch, as derm is a very, very, very difficult field to get into. You have to get into medical school, and then fight your way to the top of a class full of people that are as smart or smarter than yourself, all while doing research/pubs, having shining clinical evals, and keeping up with solid ECs.

Worry about getting into medical school before worrying about any specialty.
