I thought it would be a great idea to start a thread encouraging people to donate to SDN. No need to post the amount, but simply that you gave a donation. I finally donated today.

Maybe this will encourage donations!

I've been so grateful to SDN, I would like to help support them financially so this great resource can continue. I hope you all feel the same!

So if you donated, today or any other day, please post here if you want to.

I kind of donated by buying the SDN mug a few weeks ago. It said proceeds help out SDN. They also have medschool booyah T-shirts you can buy. :) Here is the link to SDN products. :D

There. I just gave. I even feel better, too. . . :D

Happily donated. Think of the added stress and disconnect to this whole process if we didn't have SDN.

Done. <pats self on back>

SDN has been amazing during this whole process. Worth my 2 cents. :)

I bought one of those mugs. SDN has been so helpful to me during this whole process - and so have all of you! Thanks!

Hey, this is a pretty slick service, and frankly stuff like this can get pretty expensive.

So, come on everyone! Click on the link and give your $1 to the great SDN! I did it, and I feel better for supporting a great service.

BUMP

(subtly trying to encourage you to show your gratitude)

we're paying amcas and these med schools.
i think we can donate $1 (or more) to sdn which has made this process a little less stressful.
(and it only took about 30sec)
thanks SDN!

where can you buy the mugs?

I bought one of those mugs, but they (cafepress.com) sent me a mug about some chess club - "Where the world plays chess!" This was hillarious!! I called them and they are going to send me the correct one this time. They were really nice about it, but it was just really suprising to get a mug about chess when I was expecting one about the SDN!! If there is anyone out there that wants to support SDN that can and has not, please do!!

woohoo one year subscription. please keep this site going Lee, it's so important to us!!!

woah what happened to member titles? lol i'm just a member now

Hi--I donated!

(You know, I was going to start a similar thread earlier, when SDN first started asking for donations, but I didn't want people to think I had an ulterior motive. BUT I AM SURE GLAD THIS THREAD IS HERE!)

I have learned SO MUCH from SDN, and all SDNers, that I don't know how I could have survived this 2002 application without it.

Donate! Support SDN!

bump.

I just bought a mug and gave some money to the fund. I always wondered how they keep this site up.

Bump.
I just gave too. Thanks for the site guys.

I gave to SDN today :)
give a little and maybe we can get search back.

$600 a month for the bandwidth
I heard that you pay just like $30 a months or you can jsut have your own server just on cable. 1.5 mbps should be enough and it does not cost more than $50

Bandwidth is calculated as a total per month. i.e. if 1024 people download a 1meg file, your bandwidth = 1 gig.

They should setup an Alumni foundation (or something) so we can give money after we get out of the impending $120k of debt that we are all dreading. I think most people would give money to SDN (and the community).

That was easy. I wouldn't have thought of it if it weren't for this thread. Thanks!

How do I donate to the "send Lee Burnett to Hawaii" fund?

I really like the Tshirt that says "May be habit forming" LOL! I'm getting that one! Shameless promotion!

Merry Christmas SDN! :D

I thought the merchandise was hilarious! We need some new shirts for this year's class! ;)

Um - no, most cable services offer 1.5Mbps download, and anywhere from 128-384Kbps upload. That's fine for the casual home user, where download speed is more important. The upload bandwidth is what's important for running a website or server, as it is this speed that determines the number of people who can access the site simultaneously, and how fast they can access pages from that site.

Let's not forget that the total amount of data that gets sent through the connection to the people who access the site is also metered and billed accordingly.

A 1.5M down/1.5M up connection, which is a T1 line, costs much, much more than a home cable broadband connection.

$600/month is about right for a T1 line and

As I type this, there are ~150 people accessing this site. A month ago, at one time there were ~350 people accessing this site. That constitutes a large amount of bandwidth and not a small amount of money to operate.

Buying a mug to support this place is nice gesture - sorta like paying for a 37 postage stamp to mail a letter that actually costs over a dollar to send. I've gotten so much from this site that I'd be happy to donate money outright or pay a subscription fee.

I'll start with the mug.

Edit: Scratch that - I found the Amazon donation page. I got enough mugs!
