Should away electives taken during 4th year be used to obtain stronger letters of recommendations from well known faculty at top ranked programs, or should they be done only at programs that u have a fair chance of matching with but are not as competitive? --BeeGee

    Both?

Seriously, I think the later is a better plan. It's is hard to know if you will owrk with someone who is going to write a letter, and some of those "well faculty" are impossible schedule time with....

But an externship can give you insight to a program and let them get to know you making you a known quanity.. (which usually helps your matching chances...

Unless you are a freak! :p
