Hey ndearwater, I was wondering how you liked working at Medicine Shoppe so far. There's one here that I'm applying to. I was wondering how it is different from the other chains and also grocery store chains? 😕
It's funny you should ask...
🙄 I quit yesterday. I didn't feel too bad since they did not invest much time in me and I was being forced to drive an hour to Kissimmee and back for god knows how long. Needless to say I did not like it.
I don't know if you can blame The Medicine Shoppe per se. It's a franchise and how the company runs probably depends a lot on the owner. The owner of the Auburndale/Kissimmee/Daytona locations is, IMO, arrogant and rude to techs who he described to me as "overpaid". I got very bad vibes from the particular locations that I was exposed to. It was not only the pharmacist who reminded everyone "I'm saving lives here people, I don't have time for this nonsense" (when someone forgot to X an opened stock bottle). The techs themselves were kind of snobby and had very little to say to me.
As for how the Medicine Shoppe is different as a whole, independent of the store I worked in... well, it's retail but the bulk of it's volume comes from nursing home clientelle. They don't get as many walk-in's as say, Walgreens or even Publix but they are busy non-stop refilling nursing home orders. They do deliveries to these nursing homes as well as to individual patient homes. You may or may not be expected to drive. I think the very busy locations have drivers, some stores may have the techs deliver. The locations I am familiar with have company cars and gas cards so you won't have to run your car into the ground or anything.
I quit yesterday and later that same day I found a Publix that needed about 20-30 hours and hired me that night. I really wanted full time but not in an environment I didn't enjoy. In three days at the Medicine Shoppe I did not speak to a single patient. I saw no one really- just packaged meds. At Publix, patients sort of had a relationship with me. They new me. It had that "neighborhood pharmacy" vibe, which I like. The work place is very laid back at Publix. Of course, this depends on the pharmacists you're working with. But I've been lucky.
I'll admit, the days at MedShoppe went quickly because it's so busy. But I felt like a robot. And I can't even describe how rude the pharmacist/owner was to one of the techs. He pretty much screamed at her all day about how stupid she was. After that particular day (yesterday
🙂 ) I knew I had had enough! Good luck though. It's worth giving it a chance because as I said, all Medicine Shoppes are different. I recommend Publix. It's not perfect but after doing a little research and comparing it to my three years there, I realized how lucky I had it!
