I'm with you on this. I had to retake as well and I'm looking back at the time put into this test and the stress of dealing with it. People always ask me how I did and I don't like to tell them. I just say "I did ok" or something like that. There's this whole explanation I feel like I have to give with my score because if you haven't taken it, there's no way to know what it's like. If I tell them my score, they say something like "oh, so that's not very good?" and then I assume they're making judgments about me being able to be a doctor or whatever. I can't think of a more stressful and long process than applying to medical school. Some people say Step 1 is harder than the MCAT...I can't imagine such a thing. The MCAT is the gateway to being a doctor; Step 1 may have more material, but it is something you can do if you've gotten into medical school. It's proven by the high percentage of people who graduate from medical school after getting in. With the MCAT, so many qualified, bright students are left wondering why they did poorly or what they did wrong.
