The Republic of Texas XLIV: The True Test Of A Man’s Character Is What He Does When No One Is Watching

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If their first choice has them in their accept list, if not then it goes to 2nd and so on so forth (hope not!) basically the highest ranked one that also ranked you high enough for an A. Pretty much like sorority rush lol
As someone who went through formal recruitment for a sorority and has recruited while being in a sorority, I noticed a lot of similarities too! The match is pretty much the same as sorority rankings, where potential new members rank the sororities and the sororities rank the potential new members based on their stats (GPA, awards, service/leadership experience) as well as how well the conversations with sorority members go (think a suuuper casual interview). During both processes, I've heard the phrase "You choose us just as much as we choose you!" and there is a strong emphasis on fit. Recruitment went very well for me, and hopefully the match does too!

seems like it will girl! congrats on the sweep!

I know it is still September but I’m starting to get worried. I applied to all the Texas DO schools. Submitted UIW secondary in July and submitted SHSU in August. Nothing from TCOM. I’ve seen IS and OOS get IIs and I’ve gotten IIs from OOS schools as well but silence from all Texas schools. Not sure if I should just focus on the OOS schools and give up on Texas 🙁

Keep patient about Texas, the deadline for primaries is next week & they will look at their whole pool again.

I know UIW operates differently, but should I reach out to them or just wait? The email says eight weeks to review but it’s been about ten right now.

Your OOS IIs are good. Have you finished any interviews? Usually they make an offer within 2 weeks.

I just had my first interview this past week. The school told me they’d reach out with their decision on or after October first. I did fall in love with the school and I’m grateful, I guess I’d also like to have options here in TX, especially as I am from the area one of the schools is located in.

@vicpremed01 the Tapatalk or SDN apps aren’t working any longer for us, which gives you the odd string of emojis.

Early Decision Applicants:

Among the TMDSAS schools, 4 offer a chance to apply early decision (ED).
UNTHSC/TCOM and UH Fertitta ED option is open to any applicant
Texas Tech Lubbock ED applicants must be Texas residents
UTRGV ED Applicants must live in, or be originally from, the RGV region.

An ED application is somewhat risky, because it stipulates you can only apply to that ONE school until you hear an answer from them, yes/no.
The ED schools should give you an answer by October 1. If you are not accepted ED, you can then add the other TMDSAS schools to your application.

I have seen a couple of people announce their acceptance to Texas Tech Lubbock, ED. Woohoo for y'all, you know your school, and your application season is done!

We would love to see some news from folks who applied ED to those other schools too.

Post your news here, or in the TCOM, UTRGV, or UH Fertitta threads.

If you don't hear any action on your ED application by October 1, message TMDSAS in your portal that day before 5 pm !

Tell them you haven't been notified, and that you need to act promptly to apply to the other schools if you are not accepted ED.
October 1 happens to be the deadline for TMDSAS primary app submission too.

@wysdoc I applied to TCOM through the EDP and have not heard anything. I understand that this probably means it is not good news. I interviewed early this month and was hoping to get a decision today so that I would have the weekend to digest and potentially start writing more apps. I would love to know if anyone else that applied to TCOM’s EDP has heard back at all.

Thanks for commenting. It just means they are still discussing their ED pool. It's not October 1 yet, wait until next Wednesday!

Do you think the new Oct 1 primary app deadline reflects in the amount of interviews that schools have sent out to date? Think we’ll see a push after this week since schools will know for sure who is in their applicant pool?

I think there will be some boost but it probably will lag the deadline by a week or two

Am I screwed if I still have 1-2 secondaries left to submit 💀 like will schools still take me seriously at this point?

Is there a centralized place to see timings of prematches for each school like there is for interview invites

I will set up a similar prematch list on October 15th in the Republic of Texas thread.
Not all schools will send them on the first day or even the first month.
When I create the pre-match list I will only list the first day each school does it, and won’t be keeping a running list of dates like I do for the interview invitations 🤠👍

In anticipation for the first day of prematches, I'm gonna go ahead and rank the schools I already interviewed at based on how well I think the interview went. Since I heard that student impressions of their own interview are usually not representative of anything, it's just for fun.

1. McGovern
2. TTU El Paso - went well despite technical difficulties taking off half of my speaking time
3. UTSW
4. TTU Lubbock - interview probably too late in cycle to extend prematch
5. Long - felt that I didn't manage to connect well with one interviewer despite friendly interview environment.
6. UH - was visibly thrown off and flustered during the MMI stations, which often ended very early with minimal follow up.

Typical McGovern W

I made my yearly "What the heck is a pre-match" post on the TMDSAS questions page.
Check it out, & ask any questions you have that don't require me to predict exact dates.
You should answer your phones tomorrow, and be polite... if you determine you have answered a telemarketer, tell them you are waiting for an important call & can't talk now...

No prematches today, with all those really early interview dates, too... it's pretty humbling for sure lol. Now I can't help but worry that something is going really wrong during my interviews that I'm not aware of. I guess there's nothing I can do right now except prepare for my next ones

Congrats to everyone who got an A today!!

I don’t know if anyone has any insight, but when will IIs start to pick up again if at all? Hoping for some more good news in the coming weeks 🙂

You can see what's going on with interview invitations on this page here
There will be more new invitations in October, November, and December

Yeah - happy for everyone, you all deserve every bit of it. At the same time so disappointed in myself, I must have really dropped the ball for not even 1 :dead:

So hypothetically, if one somehow gets lucky to obtain multiple prematches, how does asking for scholarships and financial aid work?

Scholarships are offered to you, not asked for.
If you get acceptances, you can start reading through the financial aid pages of each school to see if there might be scholarships you qualify for that you could apply for, either your first year of med school or later.
If you come from a lower income family (which they will see from your FAFSA) there may be grants offered to you.
Other sources you can look for once you are sure of your school are sites like your state and county medical society. Join these as a student member and apply for any scholarships you find.
Financial aid for med school is based on the school’s cost of attendance. Give your FAFSA to the schools where you have offers so they can supply the COA and let you know how much you could borrow in federal loans.

If one sends Letter of Intent to one Tmdsas school, can other Tmdsas school see it in their portal?

One school cannot see another school’s portal.
There is a risk to making the same promise to more than 1 TMDSAS school because it’s a small group of schools.
Save your LOI (single) until later in the year, or if you’re a Texas resident ranking it #1 is your official indicator of intent.

Thanks. May I ask what is the advantage of sending it later than now? (Thinking is if now, likelihood of considering for Nov/ Dec prematch)

You might get more interviews by then which would change your opinion of your favorite school.
Also the committee at each school will not be meeting to form their own rank list until later on.
Getting a prematch is nice, but the majority of Texans don't get one and the Match is the key event.

Thanks. So, when is the best time to send the one intent letter to be looked at for ranking?

I have zero interviews and honestly feel pretty hopeless. I know people say to wait till Thanksgiving, but it really feels like the cycle is wrapping up with how slow the invites are going. I did apply late (mid august-first week sept secondaries) Not sure if I should start thinking about a reapplication.

It’s not over by a long way, keep your spirits up

I am feeling the same way, and Texas is the only way I can afford to go to medical school. To ask, when should I start to understand it's over for this cycle? I feel like no invites from Texas in October is a bad sign.

remember October 1 was the last day people could submit a primary, so there will be no new apps coming in and the schools will be sending the rest of the interviews to all y'all whose applications are waiting for them

Could someone clarify how the May 15th date works in term of waitlists? Does this mean if I match in my #2 spot, I can only get off the waitlist for my #1 until May 15th? And afterwards any spots on the waitlist goes to applicants without a match?
