Thin Envelope: Rejected. How To Deal?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hm... I don't even know really. Probably Dartmouth or CCLCM but I am holding out to see what happens during the rest of the cycle. If there's anything I've learned is that you don't really know what you think of schools without visiting and doing a significant amount of research.

Isn't that the most difficult medical school in the world to get into, statwise?

Statwise? I don't think so. McMaster University probably accepts the highest GPA out of all Canadian schools, with an incoming class average of 3.9-something...But McMaster doesn't ask for the MCAT, which is why they rely most on GPA (60%).

Toronto only requires one to get a 9 on each section of the MCAT. They do rely heavily on GPA (60%) - their last incoming class average was around 3.85 if I remember correctly.

I don't know if I answered your question.

I would say that most Canadian schools are high-GPA and MCAT hungry. 😀

Someone told me that the matriculatant average at UT was something like 3.85/38, which are Wash U esque numbers.

UofT only uses the MCAT as a "red flag." It's on their website. What that means is if you get a 9 and over on each section, you're fine. If you get anything below a 9, then your application is "flagged" and it, according to three of my friends who all served on the ad com at UofT, puts you at a disadvantage. So basically it doesnt matter if you have a 13/13/13T or a 9/9/9/P. But it does matter if you have a 8/14/14S.

ya weird. i know. Here's what the website states,

How is the MCAT used in the application process?

The MCAT is not included in the overall academic calculation, but is used as a "flag." Minimum scores of 9 on the Verbal Reasoning, Biological and Physical Sciences sections and N on the Writing Sample are required. Less than minimum marks will jeopardize the success of the application.

got the thin envelope from GW on my birthday. in addition to studying for a evolution final all day, the best birthday ever!

Ok, so we're all buddies.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Anyone want to nominate what they anticipate to be their most painful rejections this cycle? For me: 1) Mayo, 2 & 3) Northwestern and Pritzker, tied.

1.) Miami & Miami-Boca :scared:
2.) Loyola 🙁

The gut feeling that I won't even be getting an interview from them have me slowly dying inside...

I'd rather go to a place that actually wants me there, anyway

1) Weill Cornell (I got invited to interview at Columbia, but not here...)

2) Pittsburgh (heard rave reviews from friends there, and also, I've become a HUGE steelers fan...)

1)UCLA
2)UCI

...They are my last hopes for California...

EDIT: These are the post-secondary schools that would hurt the most. However, if I got rejected from NYU, post-interview, I think that it would hurt much more than these two combined pre-interview.

Hmm...most painful hypothetical rejections:

1. Hopkins (alma mater)
2. UPitt (because I grew up in Pittsburgh, love the city)
3. UMaryland (because it's my state school. And right now I have no acceptances, so a rejection from them would REALLY worry me).

These are all post-interview, I think it hurts more to get rejected after you've interviewed because then it's more personal. And also because you get a chance to fall in love with the school 🙁

Whats so great about pittsburgh? I know nothing about the city. Are you just attached to it since you grew up there?

It's a really cultural city with an eclectic mix of people. You have the entire Carnegie museum chain, the Andy Warhol, and the Mattress Factory (all very cool places) if you're into arts, and you also have the Steelers and Penguins if you're more into sports. CMU is a really renowned art school, and computer science school, which brings about a very interesting mix of people which I love. Pittsburgh also has some nice architecture (like the Cathedral of learning), and there are a lot little quaint, niche places for almost anything you might be looking for ( a lot of independently owned book stores, music stores, tea shops, vegan eateries, etc). There's a strip district that has fresh market foods, a giant asian foods store, lots of nature parks nearby to go hiking, it has a pretty awesome local music scene, a lot of the perks of big city living in terms of clubs/events/cultural life but still a cozy city. It's up and coming as well, they (relatively) recently revamped the south side and now it has a big outdoor shopping/movie complex. Heh, I'm just a big fan of the place I guess. It's cultural, artsy, unique.

You have poor taste in tequila. You think for such a special occassion you could splash out a bit more for Don Julio or atleast Patron.

Whoa, whoa, whoa now, my friend. I would have much prefered Patron, believe me. However, I was nothing more than a poor graduate student at the time, so, Jose it was. I assure you, I have excellent taste in all things ethanol. I have to choke down Cuervo. Patron simply slips down like a well- oiled oyster.

If you think patron slips down like a well oiled oyster you should try don julio. It is even better, although not as well known. I blame the rappers.

Of course you could go real hardcore and try shots of 95% ethanol from Fisher...but that might kill you.

This thread has been hijacked by alcoholics!

Lab ethanol's denatured though, and I hear that it tastes like ****e. Why go with 95% when you can down 100% and be sure that there's no MEOH mixed in to kill you?

the worst rejection so far has been georgetown for me.

why? I was complete for about two weeks before they rejected me. this is mid-November. I don't think they even read my app, let alone my letters of rec. Which is why they missed the letter written by one of their own MD faculty members, who said I would easily get an interview.

two weeks! that's such bs. for $130 they could at least sit on it for a month and pretend. 😡

I think my dad almost called them and asked for his money back. he's angrier than I am.

Lab ethanol isn't good tasting. The 100% is cut with Hexanes to get you sick as a dog if you do drink it. (so how they get 100% I'm not sure). The 95% we have is not denatured.

The MeOH in 95% EtOH won't kill you, well you'd have to chug pretty quick to get there before you'd die of alcohol poisoning in general...but if you do get MeOH poisoning, at least the treatment gets you a nice warm feeling straight to the veins.

BeachBlonde, maybe Georgetown got the idea that you weren't mature enough for medical school yet. Thats not a put down, I got that speech two years ago, so I had some maturing to do too and here I am going through this painful process again. But the fact that your dad even considered calling and complaining makes me think that you're still very much his little guy/gal and you need to strike out on your own sooner or later and handle your own business. But best of luck all the same, the worst thing is to get wait listed and be in purgatory all summer and then not have anywhere to go, I wouldn't wish that on anyone, so I hope you do get in somewhere (preferably far from home).

Hey BeachBlonde,

Don't feel so bad. I got rejected from Georgetown and it was even after an interview. I feel like it was seriously a waste of my time and money. My interviewer wasn't so awesome. Maybe she was having a bad day or something but she didn't even bother to sit up and look at me while I was talking to her during the interview. I feel pretty let down for how much time and effort I put into their school. So I can relate to wanting the money back.

Since you don't know me, I won't take the maturity thing as an insult, and I see your point. But really, I don't think it's a maturity thing. I've got a few spots on my academic record and I'm inclined to think that given g-town's chip on its shoulder, they may have rolled their eyes at my less than perfect app. Maturity-wise, though...not so much. I've been told by adults all my life that I'm the most mature young person for my age that they've met (and I think one of my LORs attested to this).

And my dad is a loose cannon when he gets mad. There's a reason I live far, far away from home: we don't get along at all! I laughed when I read the daddy's little girl thing-my situation is quite the opposite.

But I am not above whining like a 5 year old for a little bit when I get rejected from med school. 😛

Hahaha, funny thread. I got my first thin envelop from downstate, I almost bursted out in tears cause I immediately thought "rejection". They were writing to tell me my apps were complete.
PS: Not all thin envelops carry bad news.

Thanks!

Me: 1) University of Toronto
2) University of British Columbia

1) University of Toronto. A rejection here would be like getting crushed by a 100 ton truck.

Rejections by other schools wouldn't hurt so much. I feel the UT application process is largely dependent on luck. They get so many stellar applicants that it comes down to who's reading your personal statement and whether they feel it resonates with what they're thinking.

Possibly. They do have a 60% academics and 40% non-academics grading system to determine who gets an interview, so you might be right. If everyone's grades are so stellar, then the 40% will be the determining factor and that is highly subjective. But I personally feel as though UofT really is the fairest of all the other Ontario schools in their admissions process. I was rejected from there twice but I still feel that way.
