Ok...here's a question for all those in the clinical years: what do you choose to wear on your feet? Also for those who've worn them, what do you really think of plogs? Especially those with narrow feet...who have a hard time keeping some slip-on shoes *on*... They look comfy, but I have had problems before with having to grip with my toes to keep things like that on, which really hurts after a while.

I wore tennis shoes with my scrubs previously, but after seeing a c-section and blood dripping all over someone's shoes, the idea of autoclavable shoes seems a bit more appealing. :) Any thoughts?

Surgical wellingtons! (Yes, they do exist).

Birkenstocks have surgical shoes with full backs. (I didn't like the idea of easily stepping out of a shoe into a puddle) Or you could dedicate a pair of tennies to surgical messes.

I am one of the Birkie fans. In rotations like surgery or ER, where I am on my feet most if not all day, I have yet to find a sneaker that works for me. I have tried expensive ones and cheap ones, and after a few hours my feet are killing me! But I have the Birkie clogs with the back, and while I think they are the ugliest shoe I have ever seen, it is the only shoe I have found that keeps my feet from hurting.

But my problem is the opposite. I have very wide feet.

I remember that we had this conversation a while ago, and I gave a bunch of websites where you could buy Birks (and other brands) online. Well, I recently was told about another (German) site, and I bought 4 pairs of Birks (2 sandals, 1 shoes, 1 "professional" clogs) for the price of that same pair of shoes in the US -- be it in a store, catalogue, or website. Plus, they have free shipping, but it takes 4-6 weeks to receive your order. If you want to pay for shipping, you can get your order sooner. They don't have all the same styles as in the US (I was looking for a particular model, and was told that it was only available in the US), but it's close. The site is: http://www.Birkenstock-cn.com/

I prefer the the low heel PLOGS to the birkenstocks. They aren't as heavy or as goofy looking. The removable sockline can be a problem with them too

DANSKO, DANSKO, DANSKO!!!
They are more of a female shoe, I think. I have seen some guys with them on; the black works way better than the brown on men.
The OB/GYN program that I looked at, half of the residents had them. I love them. yeah, your right about OB; My blue pair is stained with amniotic fluid! I only wear Dansko now, no more Birks for me

I have the Birks and don't like them. They are plenty wide which is good but the arch support does not fit me well. I would really recommend trying some on if possible.

I have Medimex Plogs and LOVE them. They have vents along the sides so that your feet don't get sweaty. They look like birkies but with ventilation. You can buy them over the internet. I too was afraid of slippage but haven't had any problems at all.

I have the Dansko clogs and must say that they're the best $100 I've spent for shoes. They're very comfortable. As a guy, I don't think they're that great to look at. But then again, after being awake for 32 hours, I'm not that great to look at either.

Definately Dansko!

I have the closed back ones and they are the most comfortable shoes I own. My fave shoes to wear on call and post. No more aches in the back and legs since I got em!

The answer is Simple.

Happy feet, Happy Doc

Thanks for the great info guys. This topic has been coming up a lot around here recently, since 3rd year is rapidly aproaching!

I've worn my Danskos EVERY day for the last 17 months. The tread is still intact - barely even looks worn, assorted body goop washes right off, and best of all, my feet don't hurt. They even still look mostly nice!

Best $110 bucks I've ever spent. Although, I still can't believe that I spent that much $$$ on a pair of shoes!

I nave very narrow feet - AA to AAA. I wear Dansko clogs, and they do fine. My problem is that they are just loose enough that I can't wear them outside of the hospital at all. If I do, I end up tripping and falling. In the hospital, the nice flat, smooth surfaces are very nice to me - I don't fall at all.

you all know the ol' saying by grandmas around the country --

In life, one should ALWAYS buy a (1) a comfortable bed and (2) comfortable shoes.

Cause if you're not in one, you're in the other!

Thanks for the great info everyone!! I appreciate the input. :) Also, fyi I found a nice discount website for Danskos...

http://www.danskooutlet.com/

I like that $69.95 vs. $100+ I'm seeing mentioned here. And it doesn't really matter if they have a scuff on them already...not if they're gonna get gooped anyway, right? :p

Thanks again!
