Hi! I was wondering if anyone can give me their thoughts on my top few program choices:

UVA
University of Maryland
University of California San Diego

Thanks! Good luck as interviews wind down everyone!

From what I can tell from these programs, it all comes down to the real estate mantra: location, location, location....

My guess is that the "SC" in your alias stands for socal, so going east may be the 1st thing for you, the next may be you comfort factor with c-ville and the east coast (but who knows, you may be going to school at VCU or georgetown right now...)

If you can appreciate the smaller town atmosphere of charlottesville, I would put UVA above both of the other programs. I spent 5 weeks there doing an away rotation, at no time was I not impressed with the knowledge and collegiality amongst the housestaff, the strength and approachablility of the attendings, and the facilities that UVA works out of. The chiefs this year were very dedicated and presented outstanding conferences, which were fully attended, and next year's chiefs will be just as strong. Fellow placement seemed solid, and the PD is a real presence in the day to day activities there.
Again, I would figure out if you can truly live/work in cville, and weather you feel the 1 hospital system and patient pop. would be a fit for you.

I liked UMD as well, but found the overall exp. to be a step below UVA- the PD was excellent, but the residents seemed a touch stronger in cville. Didn't interview at UCSD, so I'm no help there!
Good luck!

Regarding UVA, can someone give their thoughts on the fact that it only has one hospital from which we will get all of our experience? How much of a factor is this, for example there is no VA.....how important is that to IM residency training??

I agree with all that was said about the chief residents and PD too....

Thanks!

Coming from a school that had a VA and "other" hospitals to a one hospital system I have found no sacrifice in education. UVA has such a wide catch area that you are able to see bread and butter medicine mixed in with a large variety of tertiary medical cases. Having all the residents in 1 location as well is great for putting together social activities, whether they be formal or getting together after work.

If you have any other questions about UVA feel free to PM me. :luck:
