Titration question..why do you add double the volume of titrant?

I would suppose if titrating one substance took twice as much titrant as the other (are we talking NaOH here?) it would be because it had twice as much to titrate. In other words, NaOH titrates H+ out of solution in a 1:1 ration. Twice as much NaOH means twice as much H+, which is probably either twice as much acid in the solution, or a diprotic acid (like H2SO4).

Just my thought.
