Well....you'll have to excuse me for my absence, I've been on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl getting drunk of my ass for the past few weeks. Better live it up now I guess. To attempt to answer all the questions from a chick's perspective. 1)You won't find many girls on the interview circuit, at least not on the 6yr, most apply to four and a lot of the ones who apply to 6yr are focused on research or a complete disaster (although there are plenty of guys that are a disaster too). 2)I'm not gonna lie, there is a stereotype...if you're a girl...suck it up and deal w/ it! Yes, it sucks b/c you'll meet a ton of guys that are complete toolbags and weenies, but it's just a reality. 3)NO, YOU CAN NOT BE A FULL-TIME MOM, not unless you can figure out some way to be dedicated 100% to your JOB w/o your co-residents having to pick up your slack, and at most good programs thats impossible.....it's called committment. If this is an issue you're dealing w/, you better reanalyze your goals for the future don't just jump into OMFS...that's why we as women face these stereotypes. 4)Not all programs are inviting to women...I was the only one some places interviewed out of 30 and that's b/c I had the #'s and a kick ass personal statement. And some of the them flat out told me when I got there I was only there to fill a quota. Whatever you do....and I mean this....don't show your ass!! I'm quite the comedian so I'd just crack a joke and laugh it off...break the ice. Some don't mean anything by it...they either want to see your reaction or are not quite sure what to ask you. If they're nasty about it, just file it away....those are the programs you don't want to go to. REMEMBER, you're interviewing them just as much as they're interviewing you!!! Ex: I had one attending ask me in a really smug tone...."So, how's it feel to be a woman in OMFS" My sarcastic response..."I don't know....How does it feel to be a man in OMFS??" The attending bust out laughing telling me "fair enough" You'd be surprised...some programs have had bad experiences so they come off cold, but once they get to know you they're actually kind of impressed. It's not that women quit more then men or aren't as good of residents...it's just more noticeable when they do suck. Just be yourself and don't become some mean b*tch w/ a chip on your shoulder...you won't get anywhere like that.
P.S. To my co-res for next yr....dude CHILL OUT, breath, count to ten...whatever you have to do!! We are not even bottom of the barrel pee-on interns at orientation yet. Save your energy....we'll need it. 🙂
Peace homeys

Oh...one thing I forgot...about having "hot chicks" I'm not offended by that at all. It's just human nature to want to be around attractive people and have a co-res that's easy on the eyes. I'm not saying it's fair...it's just the way the human mind works. The way I look at it, as long as you can be professional....it's alright to look at the menu...it just ain't alright to order.

Excellent post! Finally some un-sugar coated post with some gems and insights....

First of all, I'm pissed that you've been tanning on Fort Lauderdale beach and didn't even have the audicity to give me a call or look me up!? Girl, I'm freaking only couple blocks away! If you're with your fiance or BF getting it on, then I understand!

Secondly, I met your roommate and bunch of others from your class this past weekend at the WREB here at NSU, great group of peeps. Well, maybe I'll get to meet yo fine @ss some day since we're both in the LSU system.

It's a nice change to hear a woman's voice on the OMFS experiences, I'm just glad that we have two female (you & Gatorette) OMFS interns on SDN now! 👍

Well said and well overdo... It must be nice to be done with requirements and have time to go chill at the beach. I noticed you were not around lately, I figured you were off in Shreve early. As far as chicks in OMFS... anyplace you interviewed at this year I am sure will have a new perspective on females in OMFS... in fact, I think you helped alot of those 2007 OMFSers who will interview at those places. Just make sure you dont turn into a surgery ***** with a chip on your shoulder against guys! 😉 ... Represent UFCD baby!

Nah...I have to give the 38 back to the ex. My dad's giving me a bigger better gun to put under my mattress to scare off the locals of Shreveport. 😀

That's funny you met all my friends....I guess that means you met my crazy red-headed friend too. :meanie: Watch out for her. I was actually down there while they were taking the exam. I was chillin at the Elbow Room and doin' shots at Blondies while they were sweatin bullets.

I liked your "red-headed" friend! She's got spunk! I actually introduced her to one of my classmates here at NSU who is a co-resident of hers in CO! She was pretty excited!

Your two UF Ortho girls that I met were very nice and attractive! 😍

Congratulations on the match... we're going to have a good time.
Are you all setup down there with a place yet? It'd be nice to chat, you should PM your number sometime.
I'm notorious for getting kicked off this thing, so who knows how much longer I'll be around.
Peace.

Hey bro how are you moving cross country? driving with crap or flying and getting new crap? DO you think living in the Pearl is cool for the first 6-12 mos? Or should I move out to Beaverton? 😕 Would like to get your POV of Portland. Later. Good luck with the dirty south. :meanie:

Now the Hookah I can see transporting, but the fetish toys....not only are you scaring me, but you might want to leave those with your gf. Most girls you meet aren't gonna be down w/ being the second recipient of those toys no matter how much birex you use. 😱

There's only so many computers left that I can use to login...
Anyways, I think you'd be much happier in the Pearl. It's very close, and equidistant to Emanuel, The Hill, Providence, and Futures. The scene is cool, there's trendy grocery stores w/in short distance, a nearby gym, and a ton of little coffee shops for you to work on your "attending-proof" presentations for grand rounds. Ask Dave about the Pearl, I'm pretty sure he bought a place there his intern year. Cost is a downside, but you'll be able to do some moonlighting to more than compensate for that.
As for me, I'm pretty much liquidating everything and flying down. I have a 3BR, 2BA place down there already so I figure I can gradually rebuild over the years: you know, screaming children, Tonka trucks scattered all over the floor, and a beautiful southern-belle to call "Mama." Booyakasha!

I've found that in LA you can get that kinda house for peanuts....my parents live on a 10 acre ranch in Ft. Lauderdale so when they saw the price of houses there they just about crapped themselves. You can't even buy an empty 1/2 acre for the kinda money down south, but you can buy an entire house in LA. 👍

I already took ACLS last year; got certified in parenteral sedation.
I think it may be a mandatory part of the orientation week.
No complaints though... a review of those sorts of things never hurts.

J,

And what makes yooooou think the guys down there are any better?
[And who knows... although not pretty or particularly clever, in time, I just may continue to grow on you 😀 ]. As a friendly wager between residents, we should bet a night of call (in trauma month) on whomever is first to establish a potentially mean-ing-ful (key word) realationship upon arrival in our new home. You may be surprised. I think it's an ill-deserved stereotype; there will be plenty of opportunity down there.

I think that I will pass on that bet....it will be easy for you to get a meaningful relationship, she just won't have any teeth or an education. :meanie: And as far as the guys go....I was there for 3 weeks....the place is like a sword fest. I'm not saying I'd want to date any of them, but the odds are a hell of a lot better. 😀

10 acres is a ranch? What livestock are you running on 10 acres... gophers or ants? Where I come from 10 acres is more like a small hobbie farm...big on the hobbie, small on the farm... 🙂

Well it's more like a small horse farm, but down there it's considered a small ranch....most down there are 10 acre lots. Well, they were 10 acre lots. My parents are only 1 of 2 places left that haven't sold to developers. It's not a cattle ranch or anything...those are farther north in Fl, like around Lake Ockechobee and Ocala (if you know where they are)

Goose-hollow is good, it's filled with students from Portland State University though. That's something to consider if you're renting an apartment. The area is just blocks from downtown and still very close to the hill. It's kinda hilly and lots of trees; overall a nice little area. Check out NW 23rd Ave and NW 21st Ave and the surrounding areas. There's some cool apartments over there too. It's a very young and progressive side of town as well, unlike the Pearl which has more of the trendy 40-somethings with small dogs, if you know what I mean... that's a broad generalization, but somewhat true. You're welcome to call me anytime if you want to talk about the Rip City.
