Well....you'll have to excuse me for my absence, I've been on the beach in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl getting drunk of my ass for the past few weeks. Better live it up now I guess. To attempt to answer all the questions from a chick's perspective. 1)You won't find many girls on the interview circuit, at least not on the 6yr, most apply to four and a lot of the ones who apply to 6yr are focused on research or a complete disaster (although there are plenty of guys that are a disaster too). 2)I'm not gonna lie, there is a stereotype...if you're a girl...suck it up and deal w/ it! Yes, it sucks b/c you'll meet a ton of guys that are complete toolbags and weenies, but it's just a reality. 3)NO, YOU CAN NOT BE A FULL-TIME MOM, not unless you can figure out some way to be dedicated 100% to your JOB w/o your co-residents having to pick up your slack, and at most good programs thats impossible.....it's called committment. If this is an issue you're dealing w/, you better reanalyze your goals for the future don't just jump into OMFS...that's why we as women face these stereotypes. 4)Not all programs are inviting to women...I was the only one some places interviewed out of 30 and that's b/c I had the #'s and a kick ass personal statement. And some of the them flat out told me when I got there I was only there to fill a quota. Whatever you do....and I mean this....don't show your ass!! I'm quite the comedian so I'd just crack a joke and laugh it off...break the ice. Some don't mean anything by it...they either want to see your reaction or are not quite sure what to ask you. If they're nasty about it, just file it away....those are the programs you don't want to go to. REMEMBER, you're interviewing them just as much as they're interviewing you!!! Ex: I had one attending ask me in a really smug tone...."So, how's it feel to be a woman in OMFS" My sarcastic response..."I don't know....How does it feel to be a man in OMFS??" The attending bust out laughing telling me "fair enough" You'd be surprised...some programs have had bad experiences so they come off cold, but once they get to know you they're actually kind of impressed. It's not that women quit more then men or aren't as good of residents...it's just more noticeable when they do suck. Just be yourself and don't become some mean b*tch w/ a chip on your shoulder...you won't get anywhere like that.
P.S. To my co-res for next yr....dude CHILL OUT, breath, count to ten...whatever you have to do!! We are not even bottom of the barrel pee-on interns at orientation yet. Save your energy....we'll need it. 🙂
Peace homeys
