I have a question for those Cali residents who chose to go to school outside of California...(and want to come back for residency...)

Do any of you have any regrets about leaving California in terms of the ease of obtaining a Cali residency (via networking, away rotations, etc.)?

If not, did you discover that it is much easier to obtain a California residency coming out of a non-cali school than you previously thought it would be?

My dilemma is whether or not to go to Pritzker if they give me a spot off of their waitlist, or to go to USC in L.A. The most important things for me are the residency implications as well as the clinical education. Given that I do well in school, I don't want to feel like I'd be making my life EXTREMELY difficult for a So. Cal residency if I went to Chicago.

Am I needlessly worrying about residency implications?

thanks for any input

I'm not one of the people who you are asking for, but I do have a bit of advice.

The way that USC would really help you over University of Chicago is if you want a very competative residency in southern california. At most schools, about 25-50% of all spots end up going to it's own graduates. Just look at any match list. So if you went to University of Chicago, and wanted to do ENT< ortho, Ophtho, etc, it would be harder to get a so cal residency in that area because you are competing for the same spots with the californians who went to Upenn, Duke, Columbia, etc, etc who want to come back to LA (and the people from New York med, etc)

The other residencies like internal medicine, etc, etc, have a lot more slots so it isn't as pronounced and the U of C name would help you out there.

I would tell you not to worry about it and go where you feel you fit best.
