Is it advisable to finish your bachelors degree before applying? Any pros/cons? I was orginally planning on finishing my degree and then applying, but then I would be left with a void year. Out of nowhere, I am now leaning towards applying after 3rd year.

Here's the plan:

1. 3 years of Business Degree & 50% of prereqs will be done this April.

2. September 2006 - April 2007 - finish prereqs and take the April MCAT.

3. Finish Business Degree during void year (Sep. 2007 - April 2008) (Remember, I am finishing a business degree... it won't be tough.. even with interviews)

I am sure this has been discussed many times before but I had a difficult time figuring out a good search phrase.

I think it's pretty standard to finish your bachelors degree... I mean what are patients going to think when they come into your office and wonder where that degree is

I think he means, applying in the third year, graduating, and going directly to med school.

Versus, graduating, applying, and then waiting around for a year, and then going to med school.

I know...

I would definitely graduate first. Saves time in the end, I think.

Most people apply the summer between their junior and senior year. They finish their degrees up while they're interviewing, etc. Graduate in May, start med-school later that summer.

You can do it anyway you want, though. If you want to graduate first and then spend a year traveling or something while you're interviewing I say go for it. It's your life -- you only get one shot at it so do what's right for you.
