To thesis or not to thesis

I'm completely bummed because I've looked into funding SMPs I've been accepted into and can't do it. Now I'm looking at a 2-year master's with a choice of thesis or non-thesis programs. Does anyone have an idea which is preferred or if it even matters? I'd really appreciate some quick advice because I have to take quick action to formulate a new plan of attack and open up some SMP spots for others. Thank you!
