I was thinking about going ahead and registering now for step 2cs. We have to take it by the end of 2006 and I'm probably going to take it in December. I was looking at the usmle website, and it gives you an eligibility period of 1 year from sigining up, and I just know that spots in my city (I actually live in one of the 5 cities with testing sites) are limited and don't want to have to go to another city. You can reschedule within your eligibility period for free up to 14 days before your exam.

Does it seem to ridiculous just to sign up this early? The only thing I can think of is what if something catastrophic happens and I don't end up graduating on time as planned? I mean, I'd still have to take the exam at some point anyway. hmmm....

It's not too early to sign up. Just be prepared to take it whether you are on track for graduation or not. The nice thing about signing up early is that you can decide to take it early if your schedule changes. It really is an easy exam for most US students and requires very little preparation.

The above poster is absolutely right. Just get First Aid for USMLE Step 2 CS and know it backwards and forwards. It is more than enough. By setting it up now, you get like a 1 year time limit and you can change it anytime with like a 15 day restriction. Yeah, if you live in the city, it is even more of a reason why to sign up now so you don't have to unnecessarily fly to another city and get room and board. Keep your expenses to a minimum, the test in itself is expensive enough.

Sign up now. The first date available after I registered in February was in MAY so there's at least a 3 month backlog (may vary depending on time of year). And that was just to get ANY testing date at ANY location. If you want your location of choice, sign up earlier than that.

Thanks guys--I just scheduled my exam for December 4th. I guess I'll start studying around December 1st. I suppose that gives me some time....

Read first aid in one day, and then take the test. First aid is more like a 'security blanket' then it is a study guide. Your time spent in third year is what prepares you for this ridiculous exam.
