too much time on my hands

Any suggestions for a medical student that is dead set on psychiatry, but will not be awarded the MD until Aug 2004(b/c of personal leave due to illness), therefore unable to participate in this year's match? Essentially, I will be just a guy with an MD in hand waiting for the2004- 2005 match process. The psych program at my U.S. medical school SUCKS, but I am genuinely interested in the field and looking for some kind of gainful employment that would enhance my application. Research seems to be the obvious answer, but does anyone have specific advice or tips regarding alternative options?????
