Top 60 with full tuition vs. Top 35

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow, because of ranking???

I answered this already. I had alot of reasons besides rank for choosing my school.

1. It's not that much more expensive (like 63k total?)
2. Have alot of friends in the Houston area and I like Houston
3. Love baylor as a school.
4. My little brother is going to UofH next year and I can help if there is an emergency (he is severely bipolar). This is probably my #1 reason.

As you can see, location was most important for me. I did not like UTH at all, so Baylor was kind of the obvious choice after I put some thought into it (I was actually heavily considering Southwestern as well)

I wish you would emphasize this one more than your happiness stuff.

He really shouldn't have to. The point is that people have personal reasons, some of which they choose not to discuss. For you, or anyone else for that matter, to call him an idiot based on such little information is pretty sad.

Nobody smart enough to get into medical school should pay for college. Pretty easy to get a merit scholarship. Pretty stupid to turn it down. For the person saying 60k is not a lot of money to pay extra for a school.... we can talk again when you are trying to pay it off after a decade of accrued interest.

Lol.

Can you show me where I called him an idiot?

Oh wait that's right, I didn't.

Because his happiness shouldn't be important enough to him for it to be a good reason for you? 😕

Everyone has their own opinions... as for someone trying to sway someone one way or the other in this thread... I'm going to exercise mine, whether it's liked or not.

More to the point, yea it changes my opinion of a situation a lot more than just happiness. If you can't believe you can't find happiness anywhere no matter what's going on... then man.. I'm not even going to say it.

Yeah bro they just toss those merit scholarships around like candy.

brb going back in time to get my full tuition scholarship for college

I think you accidentally a negative.

Why not just leave others to evaluate on their own how important their happiness is to them? Providing advice is one thing, being judgmental about personal dispositions and values is another.

To the first one, Didn't go back and check but I am sure the meaning comes across.

To the second, Nah.. I hate these one-sided, let's stroke each other, type threads that happen so often here... In the end it's their decision..

Unfortunately since it's a personal thing being posted to begin with... it's going to get personal (man that's fking corny).

It's all about making sdn interesting.

I agrees with slice's decision in this case. But it sounds like some of you are saying in a case where it is 150K difference for the #40 school vs the #70 school with no real ties (like slice has to baylor) then you would pick the #40 one. This is epicly ******ed. To be honest I can't tell if people are advocating for this in this thread. And people that are bringing "happiness at a school" into the equation? Come the hell on. Unless you have great reasons like "My wife is going there" or "All my friends live in the city" (slice), then you really have no goddamn clue how "happy" you will be. Way too much of a crapshoot. This is a prime example of grasping for justification.

Do you rly think you should be egging on mods lol

He knows I'm joking. At least I hope he does. I've posted "ITT: Umadbro" so it should be obvious

👎 for liking yourself

Full tuition is very tempting, but top 35 is pretty good. It varies upon a school in question

I should do my part to get this back on topic.

What are some of the factors then that make it worth it to consider the top 35? I agree with some of the posters from the first page that the opportunities for global health will be better after graduating and people will pay for it.

In terms of the OP (dartmed since it has been a while), I don't believe you ever told us how you felt about living in the same town as your parents?? Although I feel the top 30% thing might be so sketch (without further clarification) that I could justify walking away.

As someone that interviews residents for a very competitive fellowship, if your school isn't in the top 10 or so, it's not going to add any value (limited anyway) in big name recognition. It's about what you did with the opportunities that you've had anyway.
Don't tell me all your research/academic medicine aspirations when you've got almost nothing to show for 8 years of medical training at major academic centers. I see this frequently. We often hire our own, so being a BS artist at the interview limits your partner potential in my opinion, opening the door for a rejection.
Go to the lower ranked school and take advantage of the opportunities you have there. You may have to look for them, but it's not like the #35 ranked school is setting the world on fire with it's research, etc.
