What are considered the top 5 or 10 medical schools in Europe? Not the top 10 for foreigners, or the top 10 in English, but just the top 10 overall for Europeans.

If it is based strictly on reputation, I'd nominate the following.
My list is far from complete and leaves out schools from Romance language countries (my knowledge in that regard is limited). Hopefully, brightblueeyes and others will help remedy that.

From the Times Higher Education Supplement (registration required, but they provide a free 14 day trial, I took the liberty of posting it, so you need not register):

Note that the above list is heavily biased in favor of research. For instance, it lists:

9 9 University of California, Berkeley US 69.2 26.5
13 12 Massachusetts Institute of Technology US 60.6 40.9
38 35 California Institute of Technology US 41.5 -

None of which have medical schools.

I think Miklos has seen me rant about this before but I'm fairly suspicious of the Times Biomedical rankings. They are supposed to be largely based on research but I don't think they take into account that in some countries medical schools are jointly owned by universities and hospitals and most biomedical research is conducted at institutes associated with these hospitals. One consequence of this was that one of the French schools the Times ranked in its top 100 for Biomedicine last year didn't even have a medical school or any science researchers whatsoever. (It was a humanities school.) Meanwhile, they overlooked what is traditionally considered the best med school in France even though it has the largest centre of excellence for Biomedical research. It just so happens that most of this research is conducted at its institutes and hospitals.

As for picking the "best" European med schools, it would make a lot more sense to decide what criteria are most important to you and compare each country's approach to medical education. Frankly, this varies from country to country. But within any given country the approach and quality of education of its schools is likely not going to vary a lot. For instance, in some countries med students do not have the opportunity to do research alongside their medical studies, in others it might be expected. Some countries have two years of clinical training and others have three. In some countries you start at a hospital near the beginning of your studies and others you have to wait a bit.

In France, there are no med school League Tables like in the UK or US News & World Report rankings. Instead, medical school reputation is more associated with the prestige of its training hospitals and, to a lesser extent, how well its students do on a comprehensive exam at the end of their studies. There is also a national competition for a special research school (which is complementary to med school and different from just doing a joint research degree, which is also possible) that is only open to the best medical students and all candidates must pass a very difficult exam to be accepted. Many medical schools have never had a student pass this exam whereas a couple of schools' students have done extremely well and, frankly, make up the bulk of this school.

If you are considering a French school, the regions of Paris, Montpellier, Toulouse, Grenoble and Bordeaux all have good schools and good training hospitals. In particular, Paris and Grenoble are intended to be the main centres of biomedical research and Paris has a couple of famous training hospitals. If you want more detailed info about specific schools, please let me know.

BTW, if you are doing this to choose a school to study at, the ability to speak the language and an attraction to a country's culture should be at least as important as the school itself. Otherwise, you could have a horrible experience.

Thank you both for the replies. Very helpful.

I'm already an MS in the US. I was just interested in what are the strongest programs in Europe out of curiosity.

I agree with the above that the Times rankings are misleading.
