Do we as military physicians qualify for top secret clearance???

No.

TS and clearances above that (yes, there are those) usually require a background investigation done by the FBI. Most doctors are cleared at the level of a National Agency Check, which is done mostly electronically.

Special jobs, like those on the White House physician staff require a clearance done by the Secret Service. Suffice it to say, it goes into considerable depth, far more than done for regular military physicians.

As the poster above said, TS jobs are custom placements and clearance is similarly individual.

You will be lucky to get any kind of clearance. All clearances expire after a while and need to get renewed. Shortly before I left, I was contacted by our security office and told I needed to come by to get mine renewed. When I got there they told me "it's currently taking up to 2 years to get clearances done." I just laughed, told them I was leaving in a couple months, and we never bothered going through the motions.

Your security clearance will depend on your job and what you are doing. Also that type of info is very compartmentalized, so just b/c someone has clearance doesnt give them access. Everyone on the operational side generally has a secret clearance but then if you are deployed and engaged you will recieve upgraded levels.

Military officers are given a basic background check when they come into the service. This check is deep enough to make you eligible for a Secret clearance. It needs to be renewed every few years. Physicians rarely require a TS clearance. And what you would ultimately be cleared for, you don't want to know. (Its not Tom Clancy stuff)

USAF Flight Docs can get a TS , but if you do get one it takes about 2 years and then you are one of the limited few with one... used to have to get a TS to either fly certain aircraft missions or perform mishap investigations on TS aircraft/missions deemed TS...

I was under the impression that all officers held a Secret clearance. As for Top Secret, it shouldn't take 2 years. If the agency is motivated enough it can get done in a few months.

Few months?

Maybe someone well connected, Wing/Group CC or O-7's and some O-6's; but in my 16 years of USAF service, I haven't seen a "routine initial" TS for a doc processed in months... Maybe in other branches? If one has had a TS, I can say it does process faster, but for an initial even Secret-- the USAF is so far behind it literally takes months for an initial (ie. 6-12).

Any operational commander can grant Interim Secret level, so if you really need to, for example, get into CIC as Ships Doc, you can. Getting into Radio on the other hand, you'll need a real TS.
