Hello everyone~

First of all, Merry Christmas! 😉

I received my first acceptance from Touro-Nevada! Very happy to get that acceptance cuz Nevada is the area that I am very interested in both living and practicing medicine. 😀

So I was wondering if there's anyone else who's received the acceptance offer and made a $2000 deposit. I haven't made mine yet, but I am going to soon.

I also have upcoming interviews at Touro-CA and AZCOM in Jan. and Feb.
But, with this acceptance in hand, I now feel a bit hesitant to spend my time and money to go to these interviews. Before I decide to turn them down, I wanna be sure that I have the accurate info to weigh each school. I wanna be sure to make a very informed decision so that there's no chance for regrets in the future. So I am doing a great deal of research on these three schools in terms of both basic science and clinical education ( I am mainly looking for a good residency matching with lots of affiliated hospitals not too far away), and I would appreciate any inputs/comments from current medical students or applicants as well.

Thanks 🙂

CerealQueen, I think it is wise to keep your options open, to investigate all the possibilities and make sure you make the right decision. I would suggest that you go to the other interviews, at least for the experience of being interviewed. Hope that you will see our school is the right choice for you!

One thing I don't agree with is holding onto two or more acceptances. If you get two acceptances, good for you, but choose between them. Many people are waiting for their seat.

If you have any questions about Touro-NV you can send me a message and I will be happy to try an answer it. Hope to see you next year, good luck and congrats!

congrats!! and like Dr. B said, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us! 😀

But oh yes: love the school, i can't imagine being anywhere else. if you have any specific questions just PM anyone

Congrats on the acceptance. If I were you, I would check out the other schools before you drop the cash. You might need to ask for an extension on your payment but it would be worth a shot. AZCOM was a great school and worth checking out. But really, you can't go wrong with any of them. I would check out all of your options before making such an important decison that will influence the rest of you life. Good luck. 👍

I agree with all of the above. You've worked really hard to get to the point where you can afford to be picky; don't squander it. After the interview at TUCOM-LV I was REALLY sure that it was the school for me. But after interviewing at TUCOM-CA, I quickly changed my mind. You may experience the same thing, or you may, after several interviews, decide that Nevada really is the place for you. Make an informed decision. It's a big one.

cerealqueen,

Congrats on your acceptance! From your post, I have a feeling your enthusiasm and positive thinking will fit you in great here. I don't know if I'd recommend canceling all other interviews unless you are 100% sure this is the school for you. But, that said, I hope that we see you next year as part of the new Touro family!

the best,
Travis

PS and feel free to email myself or any other of the responders on this or other Touro threads.

I am very pleased to hear that you were accepted. Having said that I would like to offer my experience gained by being interviewed and accepted at both Turro-LV and AZCOM. The former is a very new institution which has not placed any residents yet. Program directors cannot yet judge the quality of the students emerging from such a program. Given that, it may be more difficult to gain entry to some of the more competitative specialties until the school has established a track record if you choose to attend Turro-LV. My experience at the interview was quite negative in that I percieved the school to be raw, unfinished, lacking in adequate facilities, lacking in adequate faculty and really gung ho about OMM, a series of techniques that I do not believe have any value. I should mention that I attend an MD granting institution and have some prejudices but I hope you can sort useful information from my impressions. The school looked like a very risky and expensive proposition. AZCOM by contrast appeared far more established, organized and efficient. They had a clearly stated option to home school and they provided the students with excellent quality resources that allowed those who did not wish to attend classes to learn the material off campus. Their documented pass rate on the COMLEX is very high, approaching 100% in some years. Of far greater importance, AZCOM has a demonstrated track record of placing graduates in competitative residencies. That alone is worth quite a bit to those about to spend a large sum of money on an education. Tuition is quite high at both Turro and AZCOM. I believe it was about $35K per year when I interviewed. That is quite a shock to someone used to looking at tuition rates of $10K to $11K per year for state residents in Texas. AZCOM was moderately pushy about learning OMM but seemed less obnoxious about it so I was less anoyed with this aspect of the educational process. Based on my experiences, I would advise securing your place at Turro but make sure you attend your other interviews. AZCOM was a far more attractive institution that I believe will serve you well when it comes time to apply for a residency position. It may hurt now to pay what amounts to an insurance premium of $2K but hey, you can make that up later. Best of luck with your future interviews.

"what do they do if you fail OMM class.... give you an MD"

I am not even going to ask why you interviewed at an Osteopathic School when you don't care for their values or principles. 😡

I suppose I have said all I need to on this thread, people should understand that no school is perfect... only perfect for you.

the guy doesn't even know how to spell touro, so i'm guessing he doesn't know a lot about the school.

and what percentage of DO's actually use OMM on a regular basis?

give me a break...

A lack of interest in OMM should not prevent one from pursuing an osteopathic degree. A desire to practice medicine should be the reason to apply!

WOW lawgrrl, without getting ugly, I will simply say I OBJECT!

I think most students would be wise to avoid a school that hasn't yet had a class sit for COMLEX or placed anyone in residency. There are still a tremendous amount of problems at TUNCOM (btw, Turro is the wrong way to spell it, you ******). There are quite a bit of questionable faculty (one OMM fruitcake and the sociopath anatomy professor who runs the school comes to mind) and a lot of kinks to still be worked out. If you want to go into something highly competitive (say, outside the world of primary care) you would be better served to go to somewhere that is established in placing students in residencies. If you're commited to staying in Vegas (you have family there) and want to do primary care (FP, IM, Peds, OB/Gyn) then TUNCOM would be a decent fit. If it's your only choice, by all means, go for it. But, for the love of god, don't resend your other interview offers after one interview.

BTW: I am a former TUNCOM DO student and have many good friends still in the DO program. There are a few good things about TUNCOM and many people in the DO program will make competent docs. Just go into it with your eyes open and know the stakes of going to a satellite program.

CerealQueen:

I interviewed at Touro-NV but I declined AZCOM. So, I can at least give you my impression of Touro. I love the location and property values will definitely go up in the Henderson area because it is rapidly expanding. Unfortunately, in my mind the cons outweight the pros at Touro. For one thing, I'm not too keen on attending a school that looks like a hollowed out Costco warehouse. They probably do this to avoid the 110+ degree heat during the summer, but good lord I feel like I need to load my shopping cat when I'm walking inside, haha. However, I think the primary concern is how new it is. Any school that hasn't sent a single class through the boards or residency should be viewed with trepidation, even if the faculty and curriculum are good.

I assure you I'm not hating on DO's even though I'm going MD. My purpose for choosing MD has largely to do with the fact that MD's are just more competitive overall for radiation oncology and diagnostic radiology residencies. I don't want to deal with having to take both the comlex and usmle either. It's hard enough already getting into rad onc and radiology that I really don't want another hurdle. Anyway, my advice would be not to turn down your other interviews. You should definitely check out what else is out there. =P
