Got my acceptance on Friday and lovin' this school. Still not 100% sure with six more schools to hear from (interviews finished or pending), but I had a blast there and want to hear from others who are considering matriculation!

Got my acceptance a couple of weeks ago a really enjoyed my time there. I'm a little worried about the cost of living and the newness of the school (They haven't had a class match yet) but it is still high on my list. Just waiting to hear nack from DMU and UW now.

I'm not too worried about the match, since that's going to vary so widely depending on what people decide to go into (although it'd be nice to see the percentage that got one of their top 3 choices).

The cost of living - I'm from Alaska and it seems to be pretty equivalent. Did you look at apartments/houses near the school? I didn't get a chance to, but it seems like there were plenty of options...

im also accepted to the Class of 2011---not sure if im going yet or not

Congratulatons to everyone who has been accepted! I am a first year at TUCOM-NV, and let me reassure you all, the newness of the school is only an advantage! You get to make the changes that will form and shape your school here. And as far as matching, if the Step I scores are any indication (those that took the USMLE), it should be no problem as there were a significant number of students who scored very high. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions! Again, congrats!

Thanks Chris! I do have a few questions, actually...

1) What's the cost of living like in the area? For instance, what would a 2 BR apartment go for on average?
2) What is the first year schedule like - classes every day 8-5?
3) What do you think of the block exams?
4) Do you know if all 3rd years are doing their rotations in the Vegas area, and is it an option to do 4th year rotations in the area as well?
5) I got the feeling that your class and the 2nd year class were a really close-knit group. Do you often study together/socialize? Is it a pretty family-friendly environment?

I'll probably have more, of course, but don't want to overload you :) Thanks for being so helpful!

this should help some with that questions: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=336998

also, i love block exams, i think its way better than having perma-stress with 2 tests every week...

any more questions, feel free to ask Kubed or me, (and not those pesky 1st yrs! :p ; j.k we try to take care of our 1st yrs:D )

Hahahaha, For real tho, aartichoke and kubed are awesome! They are exactly the people that I asked the same questions last year, so listen to what they have to say. They've taken super good care of us, and we want to do the same for you. They're also right about the links to the previous threads. You'll find the answers to questions like housing/cost of living etc and probably answers to questions you havent thought of yet. I did the same thing for the DO-09 thread. Just remember, if you have a question, ASK! Thats what were here for!

You guys rock :) So what made you choose Nevada over anywhere else you got in? What did it come down to in the end?

Hey, here's another question I forgot about - do students have preceptorships in the first or second year? Any clinical (shadowing) experience during that time?

Right now shadowing is only in the 2nd year, broken up into 2 six week rotations. There has been talk about moving it up into the first year, but as of now I don't know if there are any plans to do that for the class of 2011.

What made me choose the Touro NV? The people! I work side by side with THE most amazing people I have ever met. I've been here less than a semster, and not only do I have some of the most helpful professors ever who really care about the students, but I also couldnt have asked for a better group of friends than I have here. I cant even describe it. And of course, everyone is going to say, "yes, our professors care" and I know that my undergrad professors cared about the students, but its different here. Most of your professors are DO's themselves, so not only do they want to teach you well and see you suceed as a student, but in a way, they're welcoming you into becoming just like they are. I hope that makes sense. I think our professors who are DO's REALLY care. They're training you to become one of their colleagues.

That's the impression I got too. That the professors are very accessible and the students are a tight-knit group; both of those attributes are among the most important in my book.

I'm in a sticky dilemma though because I just got accepted to AZCOM as well, and I think I liked both schools pretty much equally. Oh, the agony!

Sarikate,

I had the same dilemma myself and it was definitely a tough one. PM me if you want to know why I chose the way I did. Good Luck no matter what!

Can you go here during your time off at AZCOM?

LOL...you got me there, Cardiotonic...

HEY YALLL!!!!, looks like ill be part of TUCOM-NV class of 2011!!!! soo excited, just sent my deposit out 2day. WHOO HOO!!!

Just got accepted yesterday. Great school, but I have yet to make my final decision.

Finally, I paid the deposit and secured my seat for TUCOM-NV Class of 2011. It was tough deciding whether I would like to stay in No-Cal vs NV, but I'm sure that I made the right decision in choosing this school. I look forward to seeing you guys there.

Happy New Year!

Hey,

Accepted last month... final decision pending few last interviews.

I will most likely be going to Touro next fall. Anyone have any recommendations on laptops? I emailed Roger Corbman about the requirements, but he's out of the office for a while.

Also, I have grown up in Las Vegas and Henderson. If you have any questions about the city or area, I'll try to help.

Looks like everyone withdrew since I said I was accepted, guess I'll be attending Touro alone. Sweet.

Steiner, i'll most likely be going to Touro-NV in August too.
I agree, we've got to keep this thread alive... I definitely feel a lack of pride... where's everyone at???

I just dropped the 2 grand deposit today. That was fun.

Hey Steiner (or anyone else out there), being that you are from LV, what do you think we can expect to pay for a reasonable 1 bedroom apartment around the school. I'm weighting the options of buying or renting...

reasonable 1 bedroom 800-900.

If you do buy it is expensive. The market exploded here for like 5 years. You won't be in any free-standing house around the school for less than $300,000, although townhomes and condos are cheaper. This may be an overestimate considering the very recent plummet in real estate appreciation. If you plan on staying and practicing in LV, than a purchase would be a good investment because this place is always growing and after this latest blip in home prices is over they usually appreciate faster than anywhere else in the country. and are easy to sell.

Yeah, that is what I have figured... I'm not sure if you are familiar, but
are there any particular neighborhoods/communities around the school that you recommend when it comes to buying a house. I've checked it out a few times, but I feel like I really won't have a good idea until I'm physically there. I remember driving around the area before my interview and there were tons of new developments, but I had no idea where I was...

anything in green valley is ok, the further south the better. Anthem is very nice. Southern highlands is not too close to school but ok.

hey all,
congratulations for getting into touro-nv. i got into nv and also western (comp) and i paid deposits for both schools-now i would like u guys to tell me as to which school should i pick. westen is old and close to home but i got a better feeling when i was at touro....although my family wants me to stay close to home....still confused and my mind keeps waivering between the two schools? can someone tell me the pros and cons of both these schools and also how the grading, exam, housing, tuition and support system is at both schools?????please help me....again congrats if u made it to any school

I also was accepted to both and only deposited my money at Touro. It seemed like a safer option for a student with a family to tote along, and it was closer to home. I also think their are better opportunities for Touro grads in Vegas, now and in the future.

steiner...you a Witchita St. fan, or you just like the shocker avatar? Welcome to Touro by the way!

I am a big Wichita St. baseball fan, but the avatar has nothing to do with that.

Hi all - Just sent my deposit in today

Definitely impressed by the school but still waiting on making the final decision since i have a few more interviews...

congrats to the rest of you!

I'm debating whether to go to my Touro-NV interview next week. Can anyone tell me in which states the school has their clinical rotations. Thanks!

I think most of the rotations are in Las Vegas at one of the 6 or 7 hospitals we have. You have the opportunity to do away rotations anywhere though. There is not a particular hospital that is associated with Touro.

I was accepted to Touro-NV today and I'm really excited about going to school there this fall!

I thought that Valley Hopistal became associated with Touro-NV??

I know that when I am at Valley Hospital (I work next to Valley and eat lunch there a lot) that there are Touro students everywhere. However, I know that they also do rotations at the number of hospitals throughout the city as well.

jus wondering how high the cost of living was in henderson?

is it true that guys have to go shirtless for OMM class? I thought I heard that on the tour...just wondering

I was on tour and yes i saw a guy shirtless and a girl with sportsbra...this means for you dudes, start pumping the iron, and ladies...well ladies look good no matter wut:D

Not a Touro student but I do live in Henderson. It depends on what you are looking for. Do you plan on buying a home or renting? Henderson is moderately expensive, depending on your ideal living conditions. I chose to live in a large up-scale apartment complex for a variety of reasons. #1: In a nicer area of Henderson, #2: I know of too many horror stories of cheaper apartment complexes having horrible management (never do repairs, never clean up the complex, etc.) and #3: management truly listens to me when I have a complaint about a noisy neighbor or some other issue.

I live in a 3 bed, 2 bath apartment with a roommate and our rent is a little above $1200 + utilities. That gives you an idea about the price of Henderson.

Just wondering if any of you had to weigh the pros/cons between touro-nv and azcom? If so, what types of factors went into your decision-making? I like both and am leaning toward NV (seemed more informal/homie) but azcom's established reputation might be something to seriously consider. Thanks..

I am facing the same decision, btw TUNCOM and AZCOM. Ive been going back and forth since december....the only thing that snags me about NV is that i done know how the clinical rotations have turned out given that there is only one class in there 3rd year. I have had some input however, and i have only heard good things. Well, back to deciding, good luck!

What kind of input? The rotation issue is what's got me too...

I'm interviewing in 2 weeks, but I currently shadow a surgeon on staff at Touro for rotations. There is a 3rd year student working with him. I spoke to him a lot, and the rotations are awesome. You get to work with good doctors at numerous locations. He is really practicing & learning medicine on his rotations. The surgeon is great. I'm so excited about this and I hope I get an acceptance. :) BTW...how long did it take to hear about your acceptance after your interview?

Interviewed on Monday...found out acceptance on Friday....

Good luck...Anybody else with thoughts on rotations?

As of right now, I am headed to Touro NV. I was thinking that people might need an activity that takes their minds off school so I'm going to start a wine/beer/spirits club for Touro students and their friends or spouses. I'm thinking about meeting about once a month, and everyone bring a wine or some other beverage. We'll set the criteria for what to bring (country, grape varietal, etc... for each meeting). I already have a restaurant that will host these events. If anyone is interested, message me.

Well, this little beer/wine group could be just enough to sway me...great idea...I should know soon where I'm headed...If it's Touro-NV, count me in for this group...Again, great idea...
