Touro-NY Class of 2011!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, for those who've sent out the hefty deposit...Did anyone receive an email confirming the receipt of the deposit? I sent mine out last week but have yet to hear anything. I tried emailing them and still no response. Don't want to waste my time calling since they're not really answering their phones.

Just want to make sure they get it before the two weeks are up!

i got a hardcopy receipt some weeks later in the mail. they seem pretty lax about it as long as it's postmarked. it wouldn't hurt to keep emailing them though before waiting for the hardcopy receipt. try emailing kendra copeland ([email protected] ??) the one who sent you the interview invite email and put URGENT in the subject line:laugh:

Everytime I call them, they always answer. Try extension 2009. it should be the financial aid advisor.

Just wanted to keep this from falling into the abyss of page 2.

Oh I truly hope my mother has my vaccination records, somewhere, because I am not looking forward to have to go thoough another round of MMRs and Hep B.

Anyone look into the health insurance info Obed forwarded us about? I for one need to drop the funds for health insurance, I guess I will be forced to move out of the ranks of my uninsured compadres, and become part of the underinsured population, because it seems according to what I skimmed that the insurance does not cover costs like x-rays, etc.

Anyways just blabbing since Im pretty sick of seeing Debusk's blog always on top. I just dont get it, whats so exciting about being in rural Tenessee??????My brother and his wife just left a beautiful house, and fabulous life in LA and moved to Knoxville TN, fifty miles or so from Debusk. I dont get it, and probably never will---let them have their bed buddy goats, and lives in the middle of nowhere, me I will (hopefully) never give up the urban life--i love culture, and diversity, and energy and progress and people, and more people:D

Now we Tourocom NYers should have the 10-15 pages filled with the excitement about our new school in the City, and the stories of all the good we will bring to Harlem, and NYC and to the world!!!! But we are still only at 2.........kind of weak folks.......

GET HYPE!
lol
I say we go bowling at Harlem Lanes first week of classes followed by a bar night. First round on me!!!

.....

Amen to that one (big city love)!

As for insurance, I'm presently UNinsured and recall reading something about how even if you get Touro's insurance you still have to get additional insurance for more "major" health issues? Or maybe that was only if you will be opting for medicare/medicaid(?) Can't remember
Def need the hep shot, but took care of MMR. Thing is, I'll probably end up having to see a doctor anyway and pay out-of-pocket cuz I THINK we have to get titers proving immunity?

PS: LET'S do this bowling thing.
PS 2: I think most of our thread publicity has been shifted to the yahoo and facebook groups.

Is anyone concerned about the school having a standard percent based grading system instead of a Pass/Fail system for the first two years? I think having the latter would be important in creating some sort of student camaraderie and keeping the gunners away from the pack. I also think that having P/F would dramatically reduce the stress we'll be facing with tests every other week or so. Comments?

Hello all .... i recently got accepted to Touro COM class of 2011. Needless to say that I am really excited, to become a doctor, and be in the first graduating class.
Im from california, went to UC Berkeley for undergrad and currently work for a Biotech company.
Anyhow, I wanted to see what we are doing to room mate searches? I would like a female med student from our class, Im 23, and super easy to get along w/.
Please let me know!!!!
Thanks! and congrats folks!

I think the pass/fail grading system is still graded somewhat equivalent to a percent base system. They use pass with honors or pass with high honors to distinguish between an 80 or 90 so it can still get competitive.

Make mine a tall pint of Guiness--the drink of champions, and of course drunk Irishmen, Englishmen, Australians, and those of us Americans who know how delicious a dark pint tastes!!

Has the school made any official decision on the grading system? Is it going to be a percentage base system, or is it still undecided. I personally would also like to see a pass/fail system. And I agree with all of highballa points. It would cut down somewhat on the stress, and allow students to focus on competing only with yourself, and not having to better your fellow med students.

Bowling is always fun! Im in...

Oh BTW Clement, did you notice??NYC is once again in the throes of a winter storm--(JKK and 100s of flights cancelled)while we in LA have been suffering through unnaturally high temps--got into the 90s this week. I do predict we will be suffering next winter--while our family and friends are running around in shorts and complaining about how 'chilly' 75 degrees can be when you are by the beach.

you know, as much as i would love to see a pass/fail system (since it would reduce the stress), I think i'd still prefer a percent based system.

you probably all think i'm crazy by now, but the percent based system keeps you honest.

For example, esp in an integrated and comprehensive curriculum, a percent based system will show you where your weak and strong points are and not just that you passed a class. just my opinion and i haven't really thought it out in much detail so feel free to criticize! haha

I should have been more specific. Some schools only have Pass and Fail, which is what I prefer. There is no gradation (ie. Honors, High Pass, Pass, Fail). I spoke with Obed about this, and he didn't seem too clear about the differences between the two. He told me to talk to someone else about the issue, although he did write down my suggestion. We'll see what happens.

My name is Wolfgang, people call me Wolf or Wolfi, I am originally from Berlin Germany, did my undergrad at Duke University and Masters in biochemical pharm at University at Buffalo. im excited to be class of 2011. I am thinking it would be best for me to live in a single apartment somewhere in manhattan. I'm not sure where. Im going to take HousingDO up on his offer for help in finding a place I think, he seems quite knowledgeable. Real excited to meet you guys.

Hey guys,

Check out the yahoo thread....already plans for a party around the end of Aug when most people will be in town. Does anyone know anything else definite about the curriculum apart from what we heard at orientation? Let's move our thread up!

Hey guys, I already posted something about this on yahoo, wanted to see what you guys think also. I was thinking of coming into town Early June to hunt for apartments, is that too early?
Also, would any one want to join me? I would like a Touro female room mate, since im a girl and feel most comfortable living w/ one.
Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!

Hey Mama3 -- nice to see you back in this forum since I havent seen you here in awhile. This is Anton from the same interview date. Anyways, I remember they said the curriculum was modelled after Touro Nevada, and as such you should check out their website. http://www.tu.edu/departments.php?id=44&page=251I have checked it out already and it seems like a great curriculum. Now how our curriculum varies from Nevada, I guess we shall hopefully see soon.

So did anyone make it from 2/21? I am going apartment hunting this week. Hope it goes well. Anyone else start this early?

if you guys haven't done it yet you should join "TouroCOM-NY Class of 2011" group on facebook, so we can get to know each other.

Peace!

Hi all! Just sent in my deposit yesterday…can’t wait to see you all in August! :hello:

Huzzah! I'm in too! My name's Chris, soon to be graduated from Antioch College in beautiful Yellow Springs, OH. I guess I'll have to get into the whole housing thing soon, but for now, I'm gonna bask in the satisfaction that in 4 short years, I'll be a doctor. I'm also in the facebook group, so feel free to add me as a friend, a colleague, and a comrade (if you're into that whole socialist thing). I know Rikki also interviewed on March 21st, anybody else accepted from our group? Did the Wednesday interviewees get all the spots after all?

Hey everyone...I am originally from Wisconsin and I am graduating in 2 weeks from Florida State University. I interviewed on 2/14 and I am so excited about moving to New York. I look forward to meeting all of you.

Does anyone think we should talk to Obed about getting the whole class the same notebook computers (including a discount of course) and PDA's? I am a student at Florida State, and the med school here does this. I just thought it was a cool idea...any input???

some ppl already have notebks ... like me =) I have a mac and im gonna use it during med school too ... but i think your idea is great for ppl who dont already have computers!

Hey everyone. I am also having trouble deciding between a studio and 2-3 bedroom apt. If anyone is looking for a male roommate, keep me in mind. I am very easy going (my only downfall is that I love getting up early and watching cartoons).

Just wanted to say I was accepted to Touro-NY and chose another school and have some regrets....mainly i just didn't have an additional 2k to fork over after i put 2k down already for another school before i knew i was accepted. I do think it will be a great experience for you all and best of luck in the future!

Im sorry to hear that destin...

good luck to you as well..im sure your experience at the other med school will be a good one...keep all thoughts positive!
:)

that is an awesome idea! How will you pitch it?

Oh BTW I have decided to attend TOUROCOM-NY is the fall. How are people doing with the housing search? Besides broker numbers, are we gonna get any assistance from TOURO at all?

Nice to meet my future classmates:)

Hi Everyone! My name is Katie. I got accepted in March and am finally looking at our class page. Has anyone heard anything about the curriculum and schedule? I know that they have the class descriptions up on their web page and that we start at 9:00 and Friday is a half day but beyond that I know nothing. I grew up about 1.5 hours north of the city. We could have a BBQ at my house or a picnic at Bear Mountain State Park (1 mile from my house). I think it might be a nice idea to maybe get a list of everyone's email addresses so we could get to know eachother and keep up to date.

Just a note about the pass/fail vs. percentage grading... Percentage grading is important because that is how we are ranked for residency placement.

Ranking still exists in a Pass/Fail system. Congrats on getting in btw!

How are you guys finding out all of this school related information? i went to the website and there is nothing new posted?
PLEASE REPLY:p

CONGRATS GUYS!

as far as info is concerned, i received an email from obed saying dr. diamond is sending out a comprehensive letter within the next week or so...the letter/packet should answer all of our questions/concerns...

hope that helps!

Touro University Gay-Straight Alliance in California held a Sexual Diversity panel tonite.

Hope ya'll in NY can start up at Gay-Straight Alliance at the NY school once it gets going. PM if I can help in anyway.

Bryan

So, did everyone get the packet from Dr. Cammarata answering some of the questions that we kept asking? Can we conclude that orientation starts Sept. 4 for sure? And it also looks like we are going to have class 4 days a week 9-5 and then 9-2 Fri, but he never came out and said that. Thoughts?

well now there's atleast 111 seats taken in the class....i'm in!

Hey what else does the new packet say? Can someone type it out? ;) I'm at school and won't see it in person for a while. Thanks!

Wow typing out a whole letter seems ambitious...too early for that:). Anyways the basics of the letter were that we would have class four and a half days a week, there would be lockers, a microwave and a fridge in the school, but that there would be no shuttle bus. Also, all they said about gyms was that they would be very close to the school (meaning probably no discounts on the memberships). All and all I think it was just an attempt to answer all the little questions they were getting in a mass mailing. I think there will be more to come.

haha this is good enough  Thanks Gerbob.

So does it say anything specific about class being 9-5 M-R, and 9-2 on F? Someone posted that, but can anyone confirm it?

I'm also still waiting on attendance policies and streamed lectures.

OK I finally had someone read me the letter, and I'm disappointed that it doesn't go into much detail. I'm hoping there is further clarification on things like streamed lectures and specific class time (although it seems it will be 9-5ish Mon-Thur).

I think this is the preliminary rotation site list that was included in the letter:

Brookdale University Hospital
Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center
Columbia Presbyterian Hospital
Coney Island Hospital
Flushing Hospital
Harlem Hospital
Interfaith Med Center
Jamaica Hospital Med Center
North General Hospital
Parkway Hospital
St John's Episcopal Hospital
Staten Island University hospital

Yeah, I was disappointed with the letter as well. Not only does it not go into detail, but it attempts to end the conversation about things such as housing, gyms, and shuttle buses. I think they are trying to answer as many questions as they can without really knowing the answers. I guess we will have to stay tuned.

Hello guy's, I'm in too. Yea I need a roomate possibly. I'm from un south alabama. degree in biomed and chem. worked as paramedic.
