Liberal New school vs Conservative established school

I have to make a choice and am open to any insights anybody may have. I have been accepted to both Touro and Loma Linda (3.2 GPA, no PCAT, some retail pharm experience) and have to decide where to go. I am leaning toward Touro but everyone tells me go to Loma Linda basically because noone has heard of Touro.
I was thinking Touro because Loma Linda feels a little too religious and I dislike the conservative boring Loma Linda area (where I grew up). But Loma Linda does have a better reputation and probably education. An example is rotations at LLU would be at their teaching hospital, where Touro has not had rotations yet and they definitely would not be at a teaching hospital (teaching hospital = only established med schools with a hospital facility at the school have them). Touro profs might be so new they suck. However I am impressed by Touro being cutting edge, and the surrounding area (Vallejo, Berkley) seems more liberal and fun. No offense to the LLU students, but Im afraid the people that would attend LLU would be super nice wannabe mormons (ok a little exaggerated).
Basically LLU = better education but possible psuedo religious nuts. Touro = so new I dont know. anyone have inside info?
Whatcha think...

If I were you, I'd go with LLU since, like you said, Touro is a new school. I understand you don't like the religious aspect of it, but it's only 4 years and you're done. Then you can secure a better job (supposedly, I guess) and your diploma is worth more (maybe?). That's just my opinion of course, I'm sure many people would argue with me on this one.

I'd go with LLU due to it being an established program. But I understand how you don't really like the idea of growing up in Loma Linda, going to school in Loma Linda, then working and living in Loma Linda.

And no worries about new professors. When they're new, they usually don't suck - they're there because they're good! And I say the newer they are, the more eager they are to teach.

touro is a jewish school i heard. that's religious. Either way, you'll have to deal with some type of religion. =)

it's a jewish school, but they dont impose any weird rules...the only thing is that they have kosher food at their cafeteria... which is actually nice. you also get all the jewish holidays off, so it isnt too shabby.... and did i mention u get off early on fridays for sabbath ;)

has llu been accredited yet?

well then, i guess it all comes down to whether or not you'd like to be able to have caffeine and eat meat.... and whether or not u can tolerate going to "church" as part of your curriculum every week...

hahaha!

oh good....ok, this is what i know....

touro: the dean is awesome, she was the dean that ran WESTERN UNIVERSITY, therefore, there's no need to worry that it will not get the accreditation. if you like to study, then this is the place. the place is quite, and ok, but could be boring at times....

loma linda: i think u might have to attend church....that's all i know

If I were you I would pick Touro simply because if I grew up in the San Bernadino Area I'd do anything to get out (anyone who has been there knows what I'm talking about). Touro will definitely get accredited without a doubt.

Loma Linda students are not "pseudo religious nuts." They school itself is comprised of liberal Christians. They even had a gay speaker at chapel during AIDS Awareness month. All students from the university go to the main chapel every Wednesday for an hour. From what I've heard, the speakers at chapel are awesome. Most students enjoy chapel because it's an hour break where they can center themselves and reflect on why they're at Loma Linda - to serve mankind as a healthcare professionals (ultimately, it's more than just financial gain). This might sound cheesy to some but it helps pull you through hard times (btw.. there are a lot of them in pharmacy school) if a spiritual element exists within you.

Loma Linda students, faculty, and alumni travel to many impoverished areas of the world to put their medical skills to good work. Examples of global outreach programs at Loma Linda include: overseas heart surgery teams, rebuilding a medical and pharmacy school in Afghanistan, providing medical and dental care to a village in Mexico once a month, distributing thousands of bed nets to Africans to decrease the transmission of malaria, etc...

I don't know much about Loma Linda, but when I went to Touro for my inteview last November I was really impressed with their faculty and facilities. And even though Mare Island is under lots of construction now, it looks like the area will be awesome when it's finished. Touro has a really unique 2 + 2 curriculum so if that appleals to you then it might be a consideration.

Good luck with your decision!

you can consume caffeine or meat but the school cafeteria won't serve them. The counselors were drinking coffee that had caffeine in it but of course they had to chip in their own money to buy it. lol. People are normal =), but cigarettes and alcohol (duh) are not tolerated on campus. The whole idea is that if you're going to be in the health profession and you have an unhealthy lifestyle how are you going to promote the notion of well-being to your patients. They just want their students to exemplify and promote healthy living. It's good for the self and good for the patients. Also, the school of pharmacy is the most diverse in terms of ethnicity representation and religion within the whole university. Most aren't 7th day adventist if this scares you(even the dean isn't 7th day). But yea, Loma Linda is a boring place to be at, but tell you what, all the fun places are about an hour away:LA! lol. LLU and Touro are both developing programs with great potential. I think you won't regret it either way, but personally I don't like norcal because of the weather. It's gloomy, rainy, but if you're lucky it can get sunny. =)

Yea Redlands and Loma Linda are definitely boring old people towns. And from the little I saw Touro, well it looked ghetto fabulous. I wonder if there is a young person/college community area in Vallejo

Let me also add that the Ontario and Cabazon outlets (for those of you who loooove shopping --> ie: ME!), *****go Casino, and Palm Springs are all close to Loma Linda! Oh yeah! My friend was telling me that the San Bernardino mountains are close also...so you can go hiking/mountain biking/camping, etc. I remember passing by the 15 fwy too (which is the fwy that takes you to vegas!). hehe.

I know what you are talking about!! Berdo is hell....I went to San Gorgonio High School, graduated a year early just to get the "blank" out of there! Loma Linda area isn't as bad though (it is a paradise compared to San Bernardino). Don't forget your gas mask and bullet proof jacket if you visit Berdo...

BUMP. I'm currently making the decision, right now I'm leaning towards LLU but I've already made the 2k deposit at Touro, I'm not 100% sure though as I am still waiting for one more school.

Hmm.. its tough deciding.

I grew up in Relands/Loma Linda area and I am also an SDA. I can tell you that most SDA are not at all like mormons, so don't worry about that. Also we will only have to go to chapel one hour a week on wed so it wont be to bad. Also there is a lot to do in the area. Beach < 1 hour; Snowboarding <1hour; shopping <10min; LA about an hour away; SD two hours and don't forget vegas 3 hours. Loma Linda is right in the middle of everything so the town itself might seem boring but there is plenty to do around the town.

hey, congrats on getting in. how was your interview at touro? i have an interview there next week, care to give me any pointers? thanx

Ditto what Farmecyst said. :D At least you're in somewhere right?
