First of all, I would like to say how great I think it is that you all help eachother with getting into medical school. I just found these boards a couple weeks ago and have read most of the posts (countless hours). I want nothing more than to be a doctor, but recently have felt really discouraged. I started my college career off at a very unknown school: Northeastern Illinois University. After being there for a year, I decided it is time to transfer. I am now a sophomore, and will be attending UIC next semester. However, I feel as if I am getting screwed with this transferring. For some reason, UIC will not accept 2 of my classes (probably because NEIU sucks!), but of course those were 2 classes I got A's in. So, my gpa dropped from a 3.4 (already low enough) to a 3.29; only 31 credits have transferred. On top of that, the Biology course I am taking now is only going to transfer as an elective (which I don't need) and my Chemistry may transfer towards my major, but only if I do good enough on the placement test. My pre-calc situation is the same as Chem I. So, I may have to repeat Chem I and Pre-Calc! No matter how discouraging this is, I think I really NEED to transfer. NEIU is more like a community college, I feel like I'm missing out on the "college experience". Still though, it is really discouraging to have to retake these classes. Anyone else a transfer student who got screwed?? Also since I'm on the topic, this Biology class that would only transfer as an elective, I am only getting a high C in as of now. The highest I can pull of would be a B. Is it worth staying in, or should I drop? I know med school frowns on W's, but if it's going to be this difficult to get a decent grade for an elective do I stay or drop?? Thanks for all your help!!

AMCAS (the primary application you fill out for your M.D. application) will count all the grades from all the classes you took at every school you have attended. You don't need to worry about your GPA at your new school, you'll end up with an entirely different AMCAS GPA that reflects all classes.

I can understand that it would suck to repeat those classes. If it is unavoidable, just work hard at acing them the second time around. You'll be much better prepared for those areas of the MCAT, and you'll probaby be able to devote more time to studying for you other classes.

Off the top of my head, I don't remember how AMCAS counts a W. If it is treated the same as an F, then definitely do not withdraw!

Good luck! :luck: & welcome to SDN. 🙂

if your major does not require these classes and you got good grades don't retake them because they will count as prereqs not matter where you took them. and dont worry about your gpa going down because when you will submit your amcas they will count all your coursework together.
your bio class is a pre req and not an elective for medschool. i'd say go talk to the teacher, there might be a way to get a better grade than you think. i'd take a B over a W but a W over a C.
and please weigh all the +/- before transfering. i went to a great school and i hated everyday of it and chose to tranfer to a lesser known school where i was much happier.
good luck

Ws don't count in calculation GPA, unless it's a WF, which is a 0.
