Anybody have experience transferring med schools at the end of 2nd year?

If so, any advice concerning competitiveness, logistics etc....

I know I need to pull good grades and kick ass on the boards but is there anything else I could do?

a compelling reason for transfer is by far the most critical

...usually a personal/family/marriage reason for relocation

I'm sending you a PM

Is it possible to transfer after first year or having done part of first year? And yes, there is a compelling reason.

I guess that's possible but I would think less likey.

The best time to transfer is between 2nd and 3rd year, which makes perfect sense. Also, there is a ton of variability in course work during the first 2 years when you compare one school to another. You might easily run into the problem of not having your 1st year work match up with the classes that your new classmates had in their 1st year.

By transferring after the end of 2nd year all students have jujst taken Step 1 and should theoretically have a fairly equal basic science education.

The only way to know for sure is to speak with people in admission at the school where you are interested in transferring.

So, for example, would a compelling reason for transfer be wanting to get married to someone at the medical school you would like to transfer to? Must you be engaged or married?

that's exactly my situation.

The admissions people I talked to at the school where I want to transfer said that their traditional policy has been that being officially married is looked upon more favorably.
However, when I was asking my dean and some faculty for advice and recommendation letters, they just wanted to know if the relationship was serious enough for them to support my decisions. As soon as I explained that their was a meaningful depth to the relationship (3.5+ yrs, plans to marry, etc) then they were in full support and considered it to be equivalent to supporting a transfer of someone who was "officially married."

I don't think this is really hurting my chances of being accepted to transfer, so i'm really not too worried about it. The biggest problem I have is not knowing whether an open spot will be available in the class and whether or not the school will decide to take on any new students like me.

so for now it's back to waiting.....remember after interviewing to get into med school and having to wait?.....yeah, deja freakin vu.
