Okay, so I am preparing for my upcoming separation from the military 👍 I will be separating while serving overseas at an OCONUS duty station. My DEROS and ETS are the same date. I would like to take transitional leave before my DEROS/ETS so that the last day of my leave is the date of separation. Is this possible? In other words, can Itake transitional leave before my DEROS/ETS?

I distinctly remember several of my buds taking leave before there DEROS/ETS. :meanie:

The question is can you get permission to do it? Have you asked your CO?

Terminal leave is always taken before the date of separation. You of course have to have the leave days available. You simply fill out a leave request form indicating terminal leave. You would outprocess and return from overseas prior to starting terminal leave.

That's what I thought as well. The family practice doc at the clinic I am working at when on transitional leave 2 months before his DEROS date. For some reason the DCSPER at my command is telling me I can't take terminal leave until after my DEROS?? I'm like...are you sure about that? Why can't I take my transitional leave before my DEROS and have the last day of my leave as my separation date...isn't that how it's normally done?

The Air Force "e-publishing" site has a "military leave" regulation on it that I consulted frequently to make sure everything about my terminal leave was in order. The MPF mis-advised me on at least one point, although by now I can't remember what.

Anyway, my document is an AF instruction, so it won't help you, but I bet the Army has something similar. I recommend you find it and read it thoroughly... make sure you also determine the proper procedure for figuring out how much leave you'll accrue between now and your separation date. Your LES doesn't always have a 100% up-to-date leave-available figure on it, so go back to an LES where you hadn't taken leave for a few months to make sure your calculations are good.

thanks for the replies..I'm just sick and tired of asking 3 different personnel officers the same question and getting 3 different answers..this is friggin ridiculous..I looked up the AR and it could not be MORE vague...friggin semantics..thank god I'm leaving soon
