Most people in our country aren't for government mandating we purchase anything, including health insurance. No thanks, that isn't government's place. Again, you are not a centrist.

How do you know how old I am or how much experience I have? Oh wait, you don't. Irrelevant anyway. I have plenty of life experiences outside of school including a non-medical related career. Nice attempt at creating your own argument to belittle me. Clearly shows you can't discuss the points I raised above.

Let me try to explain it more clearly. People aren't going to pay 10-25% of their annual income on health insurance premiums that has a deductible that is 15-33% of their annual income before the plan starts paying anything. I know you think every citizen needs government to hold their hand through life, but this isn't the case.

Simply put, this law benefits insurance companies only. It creates an environment forcing consumers to utilize a service that is unnecessarily increasing the cost to consumers every year while making record profits. Clearly, the everyone buying health insurance to keep costs down theory hasn't worked as is obvious based on the premiums which have dramatically increased every year. You seem to ignore those facts. After all, why would it work when you are forced to buy something. No incentive to keep prices down.
Let me tl;dr any "dialogue" with you: You are always right.

Moving on to something/-body more interesting...

The political perspective one holds doesn't equate to their clinical judgement. I think what you are really saying is that you are a shallow person who can't tolerate those who think differently than you. Without doubt, there are far left wingers who are excellent anesthesiologists. The same can be said for many conservative anesthesiologists.

It is too bad you can't see that because the neurons in your brain aren't firing correctly.

Case In Point

Yes and no? Long before Obamacare the government mandated that you buy schools, roads, parks, airports, trains, a military, a police force, a fire department, health insurance for your old age, and a (very low paying) annuity for your old age. With the possible exception of the military all of these services could be delivered privately, but they're delivered by a public program instead, and you have to pay for it whether you like/use it or not.

You're right, though, that the government model has always been to take your money, and then have the government provide the service or, failing that, pay a single contractor to provide the service for you. The government is usually too power hungry, and too condescending, to simply tell people that they need to buy something with their own money +/- a government subsidy. Why do that when you can have a bloated government program deliver the same service at 10 times the price? Its almost unheard of for the government to give you any real control over your tax dollars.

Traditionally it has been conservatives who have suggested that things don't need to be this way. The idea of swapping social security out for an Australian style mandatory retirement fund, or of swapping out the universal public schooling for cheaper/better private schools paid for with vouchers, has traditionally been a republican platform that is strongly opposed by big government democrats. Republicans are normally the ones pointing out that the best and cheapest solution for a problem is usually to give people subsidies and let them buy what they need on the free market.

That's why is so asinine that Republicans are in lockstep opposition to Obamacare. Obamacare is almost a carbon copy of a state level program created by a Republican Governor. Its just a school voucher program, but for healthcare. It preserves private, free market competition between insurance companies. It gives the middle class just enough money to buy the product they need on the free market without otherwise involving the government. It had the potential to be a permanent alternative to socializing medicine.

In most first world countries medicine is already socialized. There is no question that the US is now moving in that direction. If republicans had worked to save Obamacare, and make private, government subsidized insurance work for Americans, they might have stopped that from happening here. Instead they have done everything they could to strip the Obamacare insurance markets of the subsidies and regulations that it requires to work, and because of their mindless political rhetoric I think we are going to have truly socialized healthcare within 10 years.

Enjoy waiting in a slate grey lobby for your GS-11 doctor to see you. He was called away for an emergency powerpoint presentation about the new font mandated for interoffice memos, but your appointment shouldn't be delayed by more than 4 hours.

Food for thought, for all of us:
Opinions on Everything
Farnam Street said:
People who can't change their minds never move forward. Worse still, they see themselves as heroes. And I mean “heroes” in the Hollywood sense. They hold opinions that have been proven wrong over and over again. And they pay a dear price.

Also: Why America is coming apart at the seams
Believe what you believe. Fight for your issues. Yes, Trump is a dangerous demagogue. Yes, some social justice warriors can be crazy, and it's disturbing how powerful they are within the Democratic Party. But at the same time, it's also the case that if you feel yourself getting angry at the latest outrage to pop up on your Facebook feed, you are being played. Not that the issue isn't real, or important. But there are millions of real and important issues in the world. And the reason why this specific issue is being put in front of your eyes is because you are played by the cold unfeeling monsters that are the political powerbrokers behind Team Blue and Team Red. Team Blue and Team Red want you angry, pissed-off, and contemptuous of your fellow American, every day, so you don't notice the political elite picking your pocket.

The classic ole' argument, "all other first world countries have socialized medicine, why dont we?" implying we are behind in progressing. We are the best country on earth, PERIOD. We don't need to model our systems after other inferior nations.

The government can't do social security, medicare, VA, or Obamacare correctly. It is not a good idea to give them more to do. Social security and medicare are massively underfunded. The VA is a disaster at providing quality care. Obamacare didn't keep most of its promises, costs are not down, deductibles are not down, many people lost their doctor, an all around disaster except for insurance companies who are making record profits. The only thing truly being subsidized with Obamacare is the health insurance companies. Anything government run creates the perfect environment for waste, fraud, and abuse.

Straight to the blame Trump idea. Hillary tried that and it didn't work. The obvious answer is Donald Trump. The same idiotic line of reasoning that obviously gave Trump no chance of winning in December.

I'm pretty sure anyone who paid attention to racial divisiveness under Obama could testify he make things worse and that wasn't an accident. Racial issues aren't nearly as bad as they are portrayed to be by the fake news media. Again, you're not a centrist. Racial issues are used to distract by the democrats because they can't win on the merits of concerns most Americans have about real issues that affect their every day lives.

The cult of Trump.

See above. So there is nothing that Americans can learn from other developed nations?

Also, next time you may actually want to actually read the articles, before posting your comments. Hint: they were not about Trump.

Dude, you're dumb and angry, the most dangerous combination. Seek help, before it's too late.

I would be very surprised if you won't have some big problem during residency with your current attitude and worldview.

Also, your continuous Trump-like bullying couldn't touch me less. I have no problems debating smart people who have different opinions. You are just not one of them. So I am not trying to convince you. I am not trying to convince the readers either; anybody with a trace of intelligence can see you have an obsession.

Maybe you haven't read any of my other posts. Let me provide an up date. I have never received a negative comment on any evaluations. NOT ONE. I do just fine interacting with other staff, students, residents, and attendings.

It really goes to show how big of an idiot you are for making these types of statements about someone you have never met. Attack my views, ok, but I'll fight back. Attack me or my character, makes you look like a fool!!

Sooner or later, your mouth will betray you. Just remember me when (not if) it happens. You are way too angry (beside lacking basic manners). You don't have a character; you're just imitating your dear leader.

It is baffling that you call me angry, you can't possibly know my emotions. Then again, you're the same buffoon who thinks they can diagnose Trump with dementia. Meet before you treat. Goldwater Rule

All of us here have been very tolerant towards your behavior in the last few days. But there is a limit when assertiveness becomes disrespect. Like here:

P.S. You may want to finally read the first of the articles I had posted above. Here it is again: Opinions on Everything .

You are literally obsessed with politics, conspiracy theories, all the good stuff. So you not talking about politics is just unimaginable. Plus you literally prove how shallow you are, when you call me a leftist, especially a radical one. I'm neither. I'm a moderate centrist who hates extremists on both sides, and I tend to lean towards the more reasonable side. My favorite newsperson is actually a guy from Fox News. You wouldn't know him, because he's way too normal.

Stop watching Hannity and listening to brainwash radio hosts. Find somebody reasonable, balanced, normal, even bipartisan. A profound thinker, not a populist demagogue.

I am glad the interviewers are picking up on what a nutjob you are. Btw, speaking about disconnect, the majority of voters voted for Clinton on Election Day.

Still can't believe you call yourself a moderate centrist. If you're a moderate centrist, I'm a left leaning independent socialist.

Oh fine....I'll go first if you must.

With regard to Education....
U.S. News World & Report says we're 7th......
https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/education-full-list

behind Canada, UK, Australia, France, Switzerland, and Germany.....

Now with regard to Education.....
The WHO (not the band that sings Baba O'Reilly, but the World Health Organization) ranks the US 37th
These Are The 36 Countries That Have Better Healthcare Systems Than The US

now it's from '02...but as someone who's been in this game since then, I doubt we're climbing the rankings much. (FYI, if you're gonna get sick, get sick in France)

I do applaud you "We're number 1!" mentality, because as a country we should think we're the best, but we should also act as if we're the best, because right now.......we're not the best.

Oh and to this response.....

Look around the world, this is the country people want to come to. Too bad you can't understand that.

How many physicians have you come across that have British accents? French accents? Why are European doctors clamoring to come work in the US? Even with the problems the British NHS has (and boy does it have problems), Brits aren't running to the US for healthcare, and they're not really running here for education either (maybe for the cost, but not the quality)

Except it isn't. The Myth of Americans' Poor Life Expectancy

I'm not saying there aren't things we can learn from other countries, but things here are not as bad as they often seem.

That article addresses the effects of healthcare and fatal accidents. It does not dispute the life expectancy data. We have good healthcare but our life expectancy is still meh because of other factors. One could argue that a country with a lower rate of violent fatal accidents is still a "better" country. Still an interesting article.

Yeah, I mean the U.S. isn't the best at everything. We can all agree with that. But neither are we as bad at everything as some try and make us believe.

And I'm pretty sure the article does address life expectancy data. Check it the chart (and associated paragraphs) where deaths from accidents are removed. All of a sudden we look pretty darn good, from a life expectancy point of view.

Sorry guys, I've not read the link, but as per life expectancy, does anyone think we won't see a LOWER life expectancy in future years due to obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. You know, the patients we see every day?

That said, we all get a bit of a skewed look at society, but I really think it has to have an impact on future statistics.

Prediction: A long 15 year fight against the "sugar industry" is coming, which will be as impactful as the anti-smoking campaign (which the US has done well with). I hope so anyway.

I'm actually surprised at the number of Trumpers in my dept but there is NO WAY politics ever gets brought up during interviews. Sure we bust each others balls (and ovaries) over certain political issues on a day to day basis. But nobody ever would bring it up during an interview, near patients, medical students or visitors.

You can tell by this guy's posts that he is just waiting to bring up Trump and politics in any conversation that he can.

Hard to discuss when SDN banned me for the same rules violation as @FFP. Two different sets of rules. Typical liberal tactic, eliminate speech you disagree with. DNC did it to Bernie. Idiots like you and many others refuse to acknowledge reality, Trump won because of his views, the same views that I share. Not everyone is an Obama loving idiotic liberal. TRUMP WON. TRUMP WON. HILLARY LOST HILLARY LOST
They didn't ban me because the DNC called. :)

Seriously, you cannot expect to just land on a forum and be treated like an old-timer. That doesn't mean that I can misbehave "liberally", just that Arch knows that a warning is enough to make me see the right way.

And fatal opioid overdose now exceeds traffic accidents as a leading cause of death in young people. What is wrong with us!!?? I think this country is becoming trash.

Also, when president(s) create fights about who made which calls to the families of dead servicemen/women, it’s not our best moment as a country.

Did he really try to "come back like Jordan, wearin' the 4 - 5" and think we wouldn't notice?
