I'm new to the forum (which does not really give me an excuse anyway but...) and am not familiar with the Australian medical school application process as much as the U.S. AAMC or AMCAS stuff...

For Australian medical schools,
Q1. International applicants are only allowed to apply to two schools(first & second choice on ACER)?

Q2. Better to obtain Australian permanent residency visa (U.S. citizen married to Australian citizen) prior to living in Australia to maximize chances of obtaining Australian PR?

Q3. Is there such a thing as a reference of MCAT scores of those accepted to Australian medical schools? Something like the Australian version of MSAR to get an idea where you could realistically apply... It just sounds really competitive to be able to apply to only two schools...

Q4. Does anyone know of the medical schools in Sydney besides University of Sydney?

Thanks for anyone who read through the questions!!
Hope to hear back...:luck:

US medical schools are generally harder to get into than Australian programs, you need LORs, Extacurriculars, Personal Statements, yada yada for US schools. Aussie schools look at GPA, MCAT or GAMSAT scores, and an interview. Grad entry programs allow you to pick two schools but only one will interview you.

Are you talking about US citizen entry to Australian schools, or Australian school medical entry difficulty in general? Because Australia has a lower acceptance rate than the US for medicine...

I've heard Australian medical schools are still pretty hard to get in compared to other programs in their own country. Also, in Australia, only the best students in high school can go to medical school. Mind you, high school marks are not exactly the best indicator of academic performance...

All this may change as Oz is moving away from undergraduate entry to medicine. Melbourne is not longer accept undergrads starting in 2009. They have to do this transition slowly or else they'll be a real, real shortage of doctors for 4 years.

Actually it's not really in a transition stage, that's just a bit of a rumour. Melbourne is the only university that is planning to change. And three of the other undergraduate universities have written new undergraduate medicine courses that will be around at least for another decade or so.

You've got to put that in context, Melbourne is overhauling their whole university structure to make professional degrees graduate- not just medicine- and I wouldn't use this to base a 'move' away from undergraduate medicine in Australia.

some schools allow you to apply to them directly.

do you know which schools?
and would these schools be also included in the two schools that you are only allowed to apply to through the ACER?
