The match list for 2007 is now up. I haven't had a chance to look through it, and wish they had divided this thing into DO/MD residencies... early impression is that it's relatively similar to last years.

- one significant change: *7* went to the rapidly growing IM program at TUCOM-Las Vegas. The website also mentions they've been approved for a new 3-slot derm training program:

On the allopathic side:

- IM and Peds @ USC,
- 2 Path @ UC-Irvine,
- Gas @ UC-Irvine,
- PM&R @ Stanford,
- Gas @ Cleveland (DO or MD spot? Who knows.)
- 2 Psych @ UCLA.

Also with that vegas program, they are creating an optho residency that should get approved early 2007 so maybe spring and their interns will get first crack at it.

Ok, here's what I don't get: How can you match into specialties like Gas straight outta med school? Don't you have to do an IM residency followed by a Gas fellowship?

You still match into advanced specialties (which start in the second year of residency) during the 4th year of medical school. You will also need to match into a preliminary/internship year for that first year of residency. In other words, if you're headed into gas, your match-day card will (hopefully) show two programs on it.

Gas is anesthesiology not gastroenerology...it's a nickname since the anesthetics used are gases (like halothane, enflurane, etc.). Most people refer to gastroenterology as GI. If you check out the matchlist again, you'll see those matches at Cleveland Clinic and UCI are for anesthesia which you do match for out of med school with your prelim unless it's linked. Just an FYI.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the clarification dude.
