Hey there, I just got my acceptance letter and I'm planning on going to TUCOM unless there is some twist of fate.

Anyone else out there considering going or going for sure? How bout that deposit--it's ginormous!

Are you planning to live (gulp) in vallejo? Benicia? Berkeley? A friend just told me that Benicia is really polluted...i think the east bay seems pretty shot, what with the refineries. Any input?

I'm looking forward to meeting you folks. The people I met at the interview were really interesting and fun and way talented. I was thinking how if everyone got in, i'd enjoy med school more than i thought possible!

Ciao! 🙂

Hi there! Prospective student for TUCOM here... hopefully, seeya in 7 months. 🙂

Like I posted in the thread below, pretty excited about the stuff Lennar is putting in. They're supposed to be developing apartments/townhomes/live-work lofts on the Island too, but that doesn't look like it'll be completed with the single-family homes this year.

Plenty of other good places to live in the East Bay, though. San Rafael isn't far, and I've heard even the commute from Berkeley (against traffic) isn't bad. Other places to look in the East Bay: Pinole, or even Fairfield?

There's a whimiscal part of me that wonders if I could live in SF and take the ferry to Vallejo... heck, I'll just study/sleep on the hour-long ride, anyways!

Congratulations on your acceptance to TUCOM lemurlover!! 👍

I’ll be headed there too in the Fall. 😀 I’m planning on living on campus the first year (if there’s space available) so that I can get to know some of the other students better. Then I plan on finding an apartment or rent a house second year (I have an aunt who works in real estate, so she can probably help me with that). I heard Benecia is pretty expensive. Berkeley is a bit far and you probably might not want to deal with the traffic first year. But I'm not very familiar with the surrounding area. I'm excited and am looking forward to living up north since I was born up there but have lived in southern CA most of my life. 😎

Count me in.

Hopefully you can count me in soon... if my interview goes well!
From what I've seen, there are some reallly nice parts of Vallejo and it's just a 10 minute drive to campus.

Do you guys know how many TUCOM-CA has accepted thus far?

If a current TUCOM-MI student shows up... could you tell us a little bit about our expectations for traffic, etc? Especially first year?

Is it a really bad idea to commute from Fairfield this first year? Only 15 miles or so as the crow flies, but about 25 minutes according to Yahoo (and probably more in traffic). For personal reasons it'd be ideal if Fairfield was do-able... but am I really going to regret a 30 minute commute each way, first year?

I live in Fairfield, but if you could live closer it'd be better because the I-80 traffic stinks sometimes and it's a draw as to whether it backs up or not. The worst seems to be from Fairfield to the Napa highway 12 exit. If you could live on the East side of Vallejo( nicer area), Benicia, American Canyon, or Cordialia (some nice apartments there), you'd be better off traffic-wise. Good luck

Great, thanks for that!

What about the "social" aspects of living 15 miles away from campus in the first year? Not so concerned about wild keggers (heh), just wondering if there are other activities, study sessions, etc... that'd be easier if I lived on MI.

How is living on Mare Island like? What are the advantages/disadvantages? What % of first-years live on-campus?

I was there on 1/18 and the admissions king said that they were still in a period when they could offer acceptances to a good proportion of students every two weeks. He said in the next month or so, they will begin rationing seats and it becomes more difficult to get in and people may be waitlisted. Don't worry about the timing though! Just do your best, and perhaps you will stand out and we'll all see you there in a few months! 👍

Thanks Lemurlover. I have an interview this Monday so I hope it goes good!

Heech, i hear you about the ferry. Maybe we could both work on board the ship to earn our fare?

Looking forward to meeting you all in august! Wahoo!

I may post a shindig for TUCOM first years, somewhere in the bay area in spring. It'd be fun to meet before the hecticness starts...after all, friends who party together stay together! c-u

Break A Leg, Weider!!!!!!!

Nice job, congrats.

Does anyone know about the male female ratio? My interview had far more females and the guy at the quality inn told me he'd seen a 10:1 f:m ratio in the applicants he'd brought to the school? Does this make it easier for men?

Not sure what the ratio is, but at my interview there were 4 females and 3 males.

TUCOM class of 2009. Here I come.

God this feels good.

Congratulations bth7!

Hey all!
Just got my letter today!

Unless something major comes up, I will probably be joining all of you in the fall!
Looking forward to it.

i'm in too! It's not my first choice, but family is pushing me for tucom cause of the kinda close location to Los Angeles.

I interviewed a week ago and they told us that they still have enough spots to accept as many as they want. However, by the end of this month they will start to ration out seats.

Berkeley is only like 20mins away, but you have to pay a toll every time you go into vallejo so I think it's better to live somewhere a lil closer.

Hey! I'm heading to Touro in a few months and I'm planning to live somewhere in between Mare Island and Davis (bf works in Davis). Anybody else in the same situation? We're currently looking at apts and houses around Vallejo, Cordelia Junction, FairField etc. If anybody is interested and also in the same boat as me, we can group up and rent a house together. My bf plans on training up to work each day. But us med students can carpool to Mare Island together. I'm hoping it will work better if I find other couples because then you'll want to go home after class each day. Let me know if you'd like to consider this and we can start planning!

congrats all!

I was just wondering where the rest of the class is??
Or even current students?
😕

YAY! More classmates! Congratulations guys! 😀

Did anyone see the link on the Touro website (under current students, housing) that links to a .pdf file about Mare Island Residence Hall? It's priced like Wilderman, and near campus, but seems to have a few more amenities. I'd be interested in living there, but no one ever mentioned it while I was there. Anyone else heard of it?
There's also a word doc. on there with apartment buildings in the area that you can live in.

I saw that just the other day! And did a little searching around on it...

It looks like it's actually housing run by the "Mare Island Sports Academy". I know I drove by the complex last time I was on Mare Island, but didn't really pay attention to the dorm building so not sure of its status. The MISA is a sports camp for kids/adults to train for the professional level, run in part by Roger Theder... former QB/Cal coach!

So are there like a bunch of high school athletes living there with med school students? What's it like? How close to the school is it?

[FONT=Georgia]i have an interview in a 2 wks and i'm psyched! i'm hoping they won't have all the slots filled, i'm waitlisted @ 2 schools already. but hey, i really appreciate the living situations/social scene/life posts about TUCOM. i really really want to go to CA and i'd love to get all the info about TUCOM's students/life of students that i can. hopefully i'll be posting about an acceptance soon!.

Hey curliedoo,

good luck with your interview! Just relax and think through what you want to say before you say it. The group thing is different, but it's mostly the same old thing. =) I myself had to interview twice to get in...hehe

As for Mare Island Residence Hall, all I've got is this pdf file. I'll link it if I'm talented enough...here

http://www.tucom.edu/MIRH3.pdf

There isn't a whole lot of info, but there is a number. I'm going to call it one of these days. Apparently, it's less than a mile from campus!
Hehe....athletes...

Annie

hmm....I think I might want to live on MIRH if Wilderman Hall ends up being full for the upcoming fall semester...

Hey, has anyone started filling out anything (i.e. FAFSA) for financial aid? I know that we won't be hearing from TUCOM again until late April/early May regarding this. I'm thinking of getting a head start with that.

Sounds pretty good, huh?

Yeah, I filled out my FAFSA already...though I haven't done my returns yet.
I also haven't sent in my deposit.
I'm way behind. 🙄

going to revive this thread...been lurking for a while.

just found out earlier via e-mail from dr. haight that i've been accepted. it feels so good 😀 i interviewed only 3 days ago and we were lucky because the adcom met yesterday to vote.

i'll take my time deciding, but overall, i got a really good feeling about the school, faculty, and students. maybe i'll be seeing some of you there in august.

Just wanted to add this older, 2003 interview with Dr. Haight (hosted by Berkeley's career center)... nothing that should be a surprise to anyone here, but useful reminder of why Touro, and why DO.

http://career.berkeley.edu/Article/030502a.stm

CC: Are there any challenges for medical school graduates obtaining their choice of residency with a DO degree?

DB: The top criteria for matching medical students with residency opportunities is familiarity: rotation success as a student, intern, etc. TUCOM's matching results are above the national average (95% obtain their first choice of residency).

Thanks for the link!
I was starting to think maybe Touro wasn't right for me, but I'm changing my mind again..haha

I was recently accepted to both TUCOM as well as Western University Pacific in Pomona. Anyone have any thoughts on either school?

Boy, where do we start. 🙂 That discussion has been repeated so many times throughout the years (a SDN search showed threads all the way back from '99 on the topic).

The short answer is: both are basically the same. Honestly. COMP is older and more established, and benefits from closer clinical rotation choices. Touro is younger, but the education is top-notch, the Bay Area is still growing rapidly, and the most important factor (match list) is just as competitive as COMP.

The longer answer is: Decide on the basis of other factors more important to you. The Northwest track is one consideration. You've visited both campuses and spoken with faculty/students at both, right? Which one impressed you more? One (emphasis: just ONE) feedback I've heard about Touro: the students interviewing there seemed more... exceptional? abnormal? 🙂 More non-trads, and many with remarkable life experiences. In contrast, COMP seemed to have more typical straight out of college, from southern California types.

hey guys,

congrats to all those who got in and good luck to the interviewees.
as for me, i did the early decision program and found out in september. after that, it was pretty much smooth sailing.... 😀 t
i didn't go to any other interviews cause i got tired of playing this fricking game ( i applied to other schools in previous years)
i even did a post bac program in philadelphia and let me tell you guys it's great to be back home!

look foward to meeting you all,

peepers

Touro's got all the cool kids. I mean this is the Bay Area people!!

No seriously, you question has been much discussed . . . but if you want to hear some from some actually COMP & TUCOM students, you should post this question in the Osteopathic Forum (not pre-osteopathic.)

I do agree with Heech though that Touro has more non-traditional students. More meaning like 15% more. Which automatically means they are cooler. 👍

Hey! I just wanted to say that I was just accepted to TUCOM also. See you guys in August!! 😀

Hey guys!

I just signed my acceptance to Touro...so I'll likely be meeting you all in the fall. I'm so excited. I graduate this quarter, my sister got engaged, and I'm into med school!

Good week. 🙂

Congrats antt! I just got my e-mail this morning and I too will be attending!

Hi Everyone...I just got my acceptance email this morning also....this process is consuming me...I"m so stressed out! Which school? Here's my thing: trying to decide between DMU, KCUMB, and TUCOM and whether or not to go to an interview at NYCOM?????

My priorities:
1. Get a good education
2. Get residency in CA

Any advice??

Thanks
