Hi Lotus! I also will be attending TUCOM in the fall, and I'm getting pretty excited about it! I really liked the school when I visited and am also looking forward to moving to the West coast closer to where my sisters live. I've always wanted to live in the Bay area at some point. Being from Berkeley, did you decide to go there mostly to stay in the area? Or do you also particularly like TUCOM? I'm excited to start, but it's also nice that we know in advance and can relax a bit before the next 4 rigorous years. :)

Hello! I'll be attending TUCOM next fall as well, and I share in your excitement; it's such a beautiful area!! I mostly decided on it for geographic reasons; although I'm in Washington state, most of my relatives live all over California. But I think TUCOM does have a lot to offer, although a lot of its expansion will occur during or after our time there, but it will certainly be fun having a role in its exciting future! :) I'm a little wary about living on the island itself, but I've heard that it's not so bad...Anyway, it's good to hear from fellow future classmates!

Yes, I am going to TUCOM because I love the bay area. I have been living here for the past eight years and can't really imagine living anywhere else. I plan to live in Berkeley and
am hoping to find other students to carpool to school with. If anyone is interested, let me know.

It is awesome knowing so far in advance.

Hi folks,
I'm actually an MS-I at Western U/COMP but I just wanted to say congrats to you people and hopefully you'll be on SDN for the long haul! (Maybe we'll see each other on rotations/residencies.. who knows?)

Anyway, thought I'd stop by to add to this young message thread that should be growing eventually. :D

lotus: I might end up at TUCOM, and may well live at Berkeley also. My wife has applied to grad school at Berkeley. What is the housing like there? Can you get student housing (Berkeley)? I heard its a very expensive and run down place, but haven't been.

Jimjones,

Berkeley is expensive compared to vallejo, but it is also a lot nicer place to live in terms of culture/ entertainment, etc. If you want to get an idea of rental prices look at www.craigslist.org and click on 'east bay.' I love it here, but am also fortunate to co-own a house with several other people. Good luck, how far along are you in the process of applying to TUCOM?

Lotus: Had to change my interview date until february, because of the $2,000 acceptance deposit. I couldn't commit to paying that because of a number of reasons, a big one being that we aren't sure if 'my wife will be accepted at Berkeley or not. (She has amazing stats but hey, its Berkeley.)
Thanks for the link. It would be cheaper and quieter to live on Mare Island, but to go against the commute from Berkeley to Vallejo I'm sure is much better than Vallejo to Berkeley in the mornings.

Congrats on the interview. A very accurate resource is interviewfeedback.com, it has recent descriptions posted. Touro does a panel style interview and pretty much asks about things in your file. I found it to be pretty non-stressful. Good luck!

I was very impressed w/ Touro and will be sending in my deposit next week. (As far as interview advice: know why you want to practice medicine, and why specifically osteopathically. Other than that, it's easiest being yourself.)

Hi everyone, and congrats on gettin in. I am a first-year at TUCOM and I feel very happy with my choice to attend here. The best thing is the awesome faculty. They go out of their way to help us. I've heard a couple people talk about the exterior -- The island can may seem desolate at first, but there are actually some many beautiful views of the san francisco bay, especially by the golf couse on campus. The place has alot of history. This year we have an added student lounge and full cafeteria . So things seem to only get better.
Good luck to all of you. Enjoy your summer and See you in the fall!

um... thanks for sharing, i guess...

For me, TUCOM's location in the bay area is a huge factor. In addition, the faculty's reputation for caring about its students also made the school appealing to me.

Hi. I've been accepted to TUCOM Class of 2006 and am looking forward to it. However, I've been trying to show friends and family pictures and information about the school and can't find anything on or off the web. The website has hardly any pictures of the school itself. I've tried requesting a catalog/viewbook three times but I can't seem to get ahold of one! Does anyone have a catalog/viewbook of TUCOM? I understand that they're new but I'd love to share TUCOM with others....

Thanks,
K2

Hey Careofme,

Congrats on getting accepted. Can't wait to meet you and the rest of the gang. Regarding the school calender, you can request for one from the TUCOM's admin., but it really doesn't have any pictures of the campus. Call student service and they'll mail it to you. Good luck!

Hi everyone!

Just wondering if any of you have heard anything recently from TUCOM. I haven't heard anything recently about selecting housing options or the 2006 listserve.

Hey Y'all, I am soooooooo happy because I got into my first choice school last week. Finally, I can call TUCOM my own. I am looking forward to meeting some of the future students, so anyone who is interested should definitely e-mail me. As for any info on housing, I heard from a 3rd year student that we should be receiving e-mails that will update us about upcoming events, and that housing will mostly be taken care of around March. Hope this helps, and Congratulations to everyone who got in!

I just received my acceptance from TUCOM and sent in my deposit today. After the mail went out, Western called me for an interview. Go figure! Does anyone have any insight as to how Touro and Western compare? I liked Touro a lot and am sure I will end up there in the fall.

Ellie and ugogirl--Congratulations!! It's a great feeling, isn't it?!

ugogirl--I interviewed at COMP before TUCOM and I personally liked Touro a lot better. It wasn't anything really tangible, but I just felt more comfortable and got the feeling like it was a more cohesive, student-friendly environment. Do a search on some of the threads on COMP vs. TUCOM and on COMP's policies. There have been a lot of complaints from COMP students that the administration and students have an adversarial relationship. But judge for yourself and talk to students when you go to visit.

Dancer,
Thanks for the feedback! I have decided not to interview at Western. I really fell in love with Touro and it would be silly not to attend there this year. I had to sleep on it to decide, but feel I have made the best choice. Are you a TUCOM student? If so, can you tell me anything about student housing. I saw it and think I would like to live on Cedar but I have two cats....

Dancer,
I looked at the housing on Cedar and in Farragut (sp?) village. Farragut was BAD! The townhouses on Cedar were better. They are really a two story duplex. Hardwood floors, lots of windows.

I am anxious to get more info on housing, books, equipment etc. I want to buy a laptop but might wait until orientation to see what the salespeople have to offer. I am married and have a child so I want to get out there to find schools, etc. I may fly out over my spring break.

Looking forward to seeing you in the fall!

How does TUCOM compare with other schools with regards to residency matches? I know they post that many got their first choices but exactly what hospitals and where? I'm interested in knowing if hospitals on the east coast look as favorably at TUCOM as those on the west coast...

The list was on the web, but now they shortened it to just examples. It's under the admissions part of the TUCOM web site. I can't do much more but say that Stanford, Harvard, and Columbia joined the big UC schools in taking our grads. Only 2 students didn't match in the allopathic match, and they got placed the next day. As for reputation? Who knows.
We aren't Harvard, but few DO schools beat us for combined average MCAT and GPA last year. I think that after a few more classes graduate you'll be able to get a better handle on what our schools rep will be.

Hope this helps :p

Moose-

Thanks for the info! Do you know if the admissions office has the list? I'm just curious to see the spread...If it was on the web why did they remove it?

Oh and one other question, do you know the timeline of when the other schools will be opening on the Vallejo campus?

Thanks!

a. Allopathic Match
b. Osteopathic Match/Out-of-Match

I think our class did quite well in the 2001 match. Many students who have only osteopathic internship matches listed, actually matched into an internship leading to an Orthopedic Surgery residency. What makes the match results even more impressive was the fact that we were part of the first graduating class. I expect future matches to be better each year as we begin to fill Bay Area residencies with TUCOM grads. Best of luck to all of you and I am positive the class of 2006 will have great matches. You might have one of us as an attending or resident one day. :)

Thanks for the info!

The match results really do look impressive for the first graduating class. I suppose there are many factors that go into the match so I should not base placement purely on the reputation (although a great one nonetheless not that established YET) of the school.

Another quick question - is there data anywhere that lists what residencies TUCOM graduates recevied after the "Traditional Roatating Internship?" I realize that the TRI is a usual step in the AOA match, however, do a majority of students usually get residencies at the hospitals where they do their TRI and if so how does that work if they would like a more competitive specialty residency? <catching breath>

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey Everyone, I just felt bad because every other school has an active link for their class, but ours has pretty much been silent. I'm hoping someone will post something. Actually, I'll get the ball rolling. Is there anyone looking for a roommate (for the three bedroom houses)? Or better yet, has anyone seen them or know anything regarding what is included (washer/dryer, refrigerator, etc?) Thanx, and I hope to hear from you!

I'll be joining the TUCOM family this coming Fall....

Does anyone know if the housing on the island (i.e. three bedroom houses) have any capacity for DSL or Cable internet access? I know the university doesn't really provide any internet access, but I was just wondering if we could get something other than dial-up access in Vallejo.

Thanks guys!

according to the website:

CAMPUS TOURS

TUCOM conducts tours of the campus every Monday and Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to noon, beginning in late September and running until the
first of May. The tours are typically led by first year student volunteers. No advanced reservation is required. However, because of
various holidays and other days off, those wishing to join a tour are strongly encouraged to call well in advance to make sure that a
tour will be happening on the day that a visit to the campus is planned.

The tour begins at the Office of Admissions in Building H-83. Report to Admissions reception upon arrival. It is advisable that arrival
is planned at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour.

To confirm that a tour is being conducted on any given day or to obtain additional information, contact Admissions toll-free at (888)
880-7336 in California or (888) 887-7336 outside of California

...in addition there are also tours led by a professional company of Mare Island and its varied past - for any history buffs or interested parties...

I'm curious to know about the housing too...keep us updated~! :) Did anyone get to the bottom of the cable/DSL possibilities?

Ellie and Dancer - keep me in the loop about the roommate thing...I'm definitely interested as well! It's so exciting that it's getting so close...I was thinking about going down to vallejo next week sometime just to peek around a little. Does anyone know if they let you do a tour of the actual housing situation on the island? I was hoping to be able to do a quick assessment/comparison of the on-campus houses versus neighboring communities. I heard a lot of students live in Benicia, so I thought I'd check that out too. Any input?

Hello!
I will also be starting Touro in the fall. I did get a chance to see inside the housing during my interview trip. The housing on Cedar had hardwood floors and they were two story attached duplex units. They looked okay. I wish we would hear something from Touro on housing, books, etc. Any word on when we will be set up on Yahoo Groups?

I am looking forward to seeing you all in August!

Mickai, keep us posted on your housing findings. I was chatting with EllieR about housing and I'd be open to hearing from any of you about possibly rooming together.

Just FYI, I am looking for roomies who are nonsmokers, preferably without pets, since I'm somewhat allergic. I'll be 28 in July, so it would probably be nice to room with people roughly my age. I'd be happy to get emails or private messages from anyone.

Hi chi718,

I would love to share the commute with you and
anyone else from Berkeley. (Especially since
I'm not super fond of driving early in the
morning and would be excited to share that task
with someone else :)

what do you guys think is more important when choosing a med school: a supportive administration or the facilities?
I'm torn between TUCOM and COMP. I love the people (dr. haight and the professors...didn't really talk to the students) at TUCOM but was a little disappointed with the facilities (swimming pool is not usable, OMM lab, and everything seems to be under construction). I think TUCOM has great potential. I was extremely disappointed with the administration at COMP. The people that interviewed with me received their acceptance by the 14th of Feb while I had to constantly called to finally learn of my acceptance through the phone on the Feb. 21st (my deadline was on the 22nd of Feb for TUCOM so i had to ask TUCOM for an extension). They apparently never sent out my acceptance letter (susan hanson said it was due to an address mix-up). i did like their OMM and anatomy labs. COMP is more established than TUCOM. But my whole ordeal with waiting to hear back from them and the negative comments I read abt COMP is making me reluctant to go there...I don't know what to do? I have to decide today because my deposit has to get to TUCOM by Monday if I want to go to TUCOM. Please help...

well, tnt3, i got into both and personally chose TUCOM for precisely those good qualities that you mentioned. I just didn't feel very comfortable at COMP, (esp. after a couple of students who go there directly told me they didn't like it and I should go elsewhere if I got in anywhere else!) For me personally, I value a comfortable, helpful atmosphere more than great facilities. Although, it is worth pointing out that TUCOM's anatomy lab is considered among the best, with excellent ventilation. Ultimately, I think you should go with your gut. Good luck and let us know what you decided!

i saw your frustrated comment over on the COMP page. like you and dancer, i got into both and chose TUCOM because i just felt better/more comfortable with the environment (admin, students, campus)...yeah, the facilities are nothing like COMP but they are working on it and we were told that new classrooms are being added for the first/second years by the time we start in the fall...TUCOM also has a 95%+ match rate - that's amazing!!!...very impressive - you definitely know that they select their students carefully and those that go there are motiviated to do well despite the sub-par facilities. As for the recreational facilities, you'll be in the bay area...there's moutain biking, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, etc; northern cal is much more vibrant/diverse and not as hot as south cal - so i'm a little biased, but i moved here from honolulu only 8 months ago and i love it here!!!

I say follow your gut instinct...in the end your training ultimately depends on how hard you work...that's just my 2 cents...i hope this helps!

Hey Everyone, I wrote an e-mail to Dr. Haight and asked him about the whole DSL scenario, and this was his response:
Dr. haight:
quote:
Ms. Perhac is in charge of MIS on campus. She was able to answer both our questions. See below. No great news, but at least a clear and prompt response.

Ms. Perhac's Response:
quote:
No DSL in houses, no foreseesable DSL in the dorms. That may change once the telecomm vendor situation on the island stabilizes, for which there is no plan - I don't see it happening during the time period the class of 2006 is on campus.

That is actually kinda depressing, because I have completely gotten used to the speed and convenience of DSL. I guess these are the sacrifices we have to make to go to Touro, huh?
