I saw all of the other threads for other schools and figured I would start ours! Let's get to know each other before we get there next fall, share ideas, and help each other out with this tedious process leading up to orientation. I look forward to seeing you all when classes start and getting to know you on the forums!

Chris

Is there anybody else who has comitted to attending TUCOM-NV yet? I know there have been a few acceptances! Anybody out there coming besides me?

(Hey guys, I posted this under the premed section, but thought it might fit in here too.)

Hey guys! First off, congratulations on getting accepted! We've just finished up our block exam week so people have been a little fired. Sorry no one got back to you.

Anyway FutureHuskerDoc, if you are in school now Roger will send you a letter around April asking for your official transcript. You're all ready in, so just make sure that you pass your classes and graduate. Again… MAKE SURE YOU GRADUATE. We lost a guy a week before classes started because he didn't finish his degree. It's one of the pre-req's for our school, so don't slack off too much now that you're in. (oh, the guy who didn't have his degree got rolled into the 2010 class so that he can finish, they aren't that heartless) If you are planning of buying a house up here you might start looking sometime soon, other than that it's way too early to be looking at apartments or anything else. Just enjoy life for a while. My class started a google group that really helped people get to know one another. You guys might think about doing the same.

Again, congratulations and welcome to the family. If you have any questions (and I'm sure you do) feel free to PM me.

Hey all,

Congratulations on your acceptances! Touro U is an awsome school, in every regard! I am very glad I came here. I look forward to meeting all of you next year!

Class of 2009

PS feel free to drop me an email with any questions about anything 🙂

Contratulations!
I wish I could put into words what your learning experience will be like. I suppose 'intense' is a good word.
I wish you all the best.
Make sure you all start making living arangements soon. It is hard to find affordable housing/apartments once everybody tries to move in at the same time.
Good luck.

lol, intense is an understatement. As far as housing is concerned...I signed the paperwork to my apartment a month before I moved in. But if you are going to buy a house, which would probably be a REALLY good investment, starting to look now wouldn't be a bad idea. Congratulations!!!

Hey Everyone,
I will be interviewing on Jan 3, and was wondering if anyone has any advice?

Congrats Class 2010 and welcome to the Touro Nevada family!!!!

Advice for those interviewing is simple. Do a search for TUNCOM or Touro Nevada with the friendly search button. There is some great information you will find that has been posted before. Also PM any of us current students with your questions that are unanswered from the various threads you will find.

Good luck!!

My best advice is just be yourself. And ask questions! Do some research on the school and the types of things going on in this state, exempli gratia, mal-practice insurance premiums, no. of people uninsured, the number of years required before you can legally practice medicine in NV, the costs of medicine (NV ranks 4th in the nation for having the most expensive health care costs). Know a little bit about our state licensure boards, etc. Read up on NOMA, AOA, and SOMA.

Happy Holidays Class of 2010!!! I don't usually say this but...carpe diem...cherish every minute of your free time. Spend as much time with your friends, family and significant others as you can...especially during the holidays. Build as many memories as you can. Live life like your previous one is about to end...because in a way it is...Having said this... med school is definitely a unique experience. There is a lot to fear, but there is A LOT to be excited about and to look forward to. It's a weird kind of craziness. You are stress out to the max, but in a strange way, YOU LIKE IT. You build friendships along the way that you are sure (atleast I am) will be lifelong frienships. In those few hours that you might have on a Friday night, you build memories that you will remember forever. And along the way, through all of this torment, you are reminded that it will all be so very much worth it in the end. Again, congratulations and happy holidays! 🙂

Hey Class fo 2010! I just received my email from Roger that I've been accepted! Really excited, anyone else out there who got the same great news?
A question for those already at Touro about housing. They mentioned that the housing market is pretty tough. I was wondering if there are any certain areas I need to stay away from, and any that I should look into?

Thanks, and looking forward to meeting everyone! 😀

Congratulations on your acceptance!

The housing market is a little crazy if you are looking to buy a home. If you just want to rent there are more then enough apartments and houses nearby. Rent isn't bad, but depending on where you are coming from there can be a little bit of sticker shock. My little one bedroom apartment is $860. If you can find some friends, a house is a much better deal. A few of my buddies just rented a really nice three bedroom house for $1300.

Everything right around school is nice. If you want to be a little further away, look into Green Valley or anything around Black Mountain. Stay away from a Las Vegas zip code and anything in old or historic Henderson. The rent will be cheaper, but this is the "bad" part of town.

Anyway, feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I'm more than happy to help.

Again, congratulations and welcome to the family.

oops...double post...see below 😳

actually, my roommate and i are looking to move houses too so we just did a massive house search, and found quite a few houses in nice areas if you were interested, i would be more than happy to pass the info on to you!

congrats on getting in...and we will see you in august!

oh, yeah, you can PM me too with questions....(im much nicer and much more sane that Kubed 😛)

Anything you want to pass along would be great, and thanks for the congrats!

Congratulations! I interviewed on tuesday 1/10. I also was accepted. We don't have much time to decide though. I am leaning toward this school. My only concern is the match list for MI is most primary care, which may make the prospects for specializing more difficult???

Congrats on your acceptances!

Housing is not bad, I can walk to school and pay $750 a month for a one bedroom, 2 bedrooms are around $450 / person. Most people live within a 5 minute drive of school.

Some information to help those making decisions:

This is an old story, but this facility is now recognized as a world class surgery training facility. Every weekend about 4-6 students from Touro volunteer and gain experience at this facility.

This is a newer story:

A bit on the booming area and opportunities in Henderson and the Vegas area. And info on the city of Henderson.

welcome class of '10 soon you will learn the true meaing of "getting schooled" my guess is that it will come in the form of the one and only Dr. Ma ( Gross Anatomy)
congrats to you all
if you guys can buy a house, Las vegas grew 85% from 1990 -2000 and is still a hot place to live, it is the 24 largest city in the U.S.
see you in the fall

I have to ask...what's it like living in Las Vegas? i.e. what's beyond the strip...

Hey everyone, you can add me to the TUCOM-NV c/o 2010 list! I'm looking forward to meeting all of you this fall!

Hello! I've changed my mind. I am going to join you in henderson next fall! I was all lined up to go elsewhere, but I just can't leave the west. 😎

So, I'm seriously thinking about buying a house/condo. Can anyone point me in the right direction? My dad and grandpa are going to help me financially, but I have never done anything like this, so I really don't know where to begin. I was looking on craigslist, and saw a lot of nice properties, but I don't know what to do next. Also, any current students have location tips? Thanks!

Congrats on your decision. I was a little torn too after hearing from LECOM-PA. I live in NY right now, but grew up in SoCal, and went to UCI for undergrad, and I'm definitely missing the west. Ironically, my parents purchased property in Henderson last year before I even knew that I was going to apply to med school there. I'll try to get some advice from them and let you know.

1hotaartichoke just did a massive house search. Send her a PM on sat and she can probably steer you towards some good resources. (Saturday afternoon really… blocks end tomorrow and we need some time to sober up 😴 )

Off the top of my head… stay away from anything that says "old Henderson" of "historic henderson." Greenvalley is really nice, but a little on the pricy side. Everything around black mountain is also nice (that's where I am).

sigh... time to study for the anatomy pratical

yeah, i just did a mega house search, so if anyone is interested, just PM me, and i can pass on the info i've got. 😀

What's goin on? Congratz to everyone with their acceptances. I got mine on Feb.10! I'm really excited about starting the next phase of my life in Henderson. I'm also looking to buy a house. I just sent a pm to 1hotaartichoke. Hopefully she can pass along that massive info with regard to house hunting. I'm looking forward to getting to know my classmates. Take care.

So now that we're all getting our acceptances and looking for apartments and such, when is everyone planning on making the move? My wife and I are hoping to move the first of June if everything goes right. Anybody else have plans to hang out and have a good time before school starts? It'll be great to get to know everyone before classes start. We'll have to get together with the 09er's too! Im just stoked to make the move!

hi everyone who pmed me...since it was quite a few of you im just going to write a reply here...

but just give me a day or so more to gather all my info...and i will get back to you! i haven't forgotten though!

Hey, congrats to everyone else who have been accepted. For those looking for a house, try www.pulte.com.

pulte is good but expensive. there are also KB homes, DR horton, Engle Homes, Concordia homes, and Beazer homes. I know there are some good homes by Concordia going up soon. the development is called Avalon. You should be able to google any of these h ome developers and be able to find their homes. KB homes is building a whole new development on Horizen Ridge and Gibson called the villas at black mountain (literally up the street from the school.) the Avalon homes are on horizen at the end, and that location is nice as well. Not too far away. About a 5 minute drive, tops. There are also some 1 story homes for sale next to the Avalon homes on Horizen. Those are also by KB homes. And don't forget resale homes. the zip codes i would look for houses in are: 89012, 89014, 89015, and 89074, 89075...and i think green valley is 89012, but if not, then also anythiing in green valley.

here are some links Concordia Homes, and also KB Homes

http://www.newhomesource.com/ is a good place to get started.

hope that helps.

i am buying a new home(well my parents are) at the villas at black mountain, and so will have my house up for sale soon. Also, i have another classmate that will be selling his condo soon too.

if you were interested in my house or the condo, just shoot me a PM, and i will get that info for you.

otherwise, happy house hunting! 😀

For the people renting (I'm guessing most of you), here is a list of rental housing near the school.

http://www.tun-omsga.com/students/housing.php

(this website is largely still under construction by the student gov, so this is pretty much all that is there at present, we'll be adding more in the future)

Lots of people from our class live in Remmington, Timberlake, and Ventana Canyon.

I live in Remmington and pay $750 month for a single and I think its $890 for a double. I can walk to school. 🙂
