Hey man, I was wondering this too. I need to start looking for a place soon. I could just call them up too.

I heard that they are goin to send out the info in the early April. You can find this info in a pink booklet that contains DMD program info.

Utes,
Is Malden located close to Tufts dental school? Are u planning on living in an apartment?

Malden is 17 minutes away via the T (orange line). Close enough that I don't have to wake up too early to get to class, far enough away that I don't feel like I'm living downtown. It's a condo, not an apartment but there seems to be a lot of places to rent there (apt's/houses/etc). My favorite part is the parking, even living right next to the T, I don't think I can give up my car.

Hey Utes,

Are you looking at those equity apartments next to the malden center t-station? I thought they were kinda overpriced. I need more malden ideas!

Not those, this condo is about a 5 minute walk from the T station, it was the only condo for sale in the building. As far as pricing goes, unfortunately it appears everything is overpriced in boston! I saw the other day though that there was a whole bunch of condos for sale on Pierce St. They were kind of small but cheaper than most condos that I've seen.

what if you don't know anything about the Boston area, I'm not even sure where to begin looking

I looked at maps of the subway system on MBTA. Then I looked at how far I wanted to commute each day (they have a trip planner on the mbta website... as you probably already know, the New England Medical Center stop on the orange line is right across the street from the school). Next I started looking for places (condos/apartments) in the areas surrounding the T. I used Realtor.com it shows houses/condos and then you can click another tab for apartments. After I picked some out in target price ranges, I asked family that I have in the area if the area was good or not, and they also checked out the places for me.

Do you have a car?
Single or in a relationship (I'm willing to live in ghetto conditions but my wife sure isn't! )
Pets?
Are you looking to rent or buy?
How far do you want to commute? (Walk/Subway/Bus)?
How much are you looking to spend?

List some things that you're looking for and maybe everyone on here can help you narrow your choices down.

If you have any specific questions feel free to boardmail me.

Hi! I'm a first year at Tufts right now. I was looking for a roommate for next year. I am currently renting a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment. It is on the 22nd floor with a view of the Boston Harbor. It is 3 stops from the dental school on the Orange Line (takes about 5 minutes) or about a 10-12 minute walk. The T stop is right next to the building. If you are interested, please reply to this thread. Thank you!

that sounds awesome...how much does the apt cost per month (including water, gas, and electric bills)? also, how did you find apartments when searching for your current apartment, and how much time did you giver yourself before school started to find it? thanks a lot.

If you email me, I can give you the specifics on the rent and utilities ([email protected]). I started looking really early - in February. I would start looking early, because most students start looking too late and get stuck with something. Many apartment buildings will also give you a better deal if you sign earlier since they have many apartments being vacated around that time. Be careful that you dont move too far. I saw some threads about students wanting to live in Malden. You will definitely get a better deal if you live there, but remember the T stops at 12:30 and to take a cab back from Chinatown/Downtown Boston is almost $30. A few of my friends that do live in Malden are looking for apartments closer to school. Also, if you live far away it is hard to go home between classes. Lastly, they hire the housing coordinator over the summer, which sometimes is too late to secure a good place. Good luck with apartment hunting!

hey there,
i will be enrolling at tufts dent. in the fall, and was just curious which areas of boston are nearby the school, and where students tend to live. i am hoping to purchase a condo or apt, or rent if things dont go as planned, but im not all that familiar with the area. i know i want to be close to the school, but i dont want to be in an overly loud area where i can't sleep (which what i hear about allston, but i dont know) any info you could offer would be fantastic. thanks a lot.

hey eldirty im from VA too. i just got accepted. where are you from in VA?

Im from Blacksburg and yourself?

I'm from VA too...VA Beach area. I hope to get in the dorms, but considering that they MAIL the forms and its first come, first served, VA people aren't going to have much luck compared to New England area... 🙁 Chinatown seems pretty cool though, and I wouldn't mind living that close to the D-school!

If only Posner had individual bathrooms.. I'd live there for 4 years. Communal bathrooms? What am I, 18?

thanks ... great first hand account

searching for housing in boston is no fun!! maybe ill see you guys around the city!

Posner is intended for incoming freshmen only. In order to stay there as an upperclassman, you'd have to petition to be in a lottery system and get selected to be there.
Agreed with the post, the shared bathrooms makes it a challenge in the morning as everyone will try to use it for your 9am or 10am classes. As you can imagine, this would be a difficult for second years who have 8am classes, "sharp", and have to compete for bathroom use. Also, the difference in schedule would allow parties and gatherings that may interfere with your second year studies, ie exam blocks (14 exams over 2 weeks) and the boards! It is recommended that you find someplace to live as second year. A lot of people group-up from the dorms and move to the Metropolitan next door, which is nicer but more expensive. The extra cost is worth it.
The shared kitchen is not that cooking friendly either. I knew people that spent a lot of money eating out, which meant all of the money saved from the dorm minus the privacy.
On the privacy note, bringing someone home from the club or the street would not be easy. ... recommendation: get a hotel using a fake ID 😀

Now, lets talk about the benefits of living in the dorms. It is litterally a block and a half from school, or even closer if you know the shortcuts. That means, on those nasty winter days with negative tempuratures that would get your hands and ears to fall off, you can walk through these secret paths that are connective to the school.
You will feel bad for your friends who have to walk through the Boston Commons during these times.
Also, since you're so close to school, that means that you can stay late and study in the newly renovated library, or do lab work, waxups, etc... in school and come home without safety concerns. And trust me, you will spend plenty of time to study and do these activities during your first year.
During my stay there were a few violent acts in front of the dorm. However, Tufts campus is very safe, if you make it to be. During night times, students have the option of having the police escort them back to the dorm if needed.

.... Ok, that's enough for now, if you have more questions, PM me.

just some more insight....

1. there are actually a decent amount of upperclassmen that succeeded in winning the lottery. when i was in the dorms, there was 6 on my floor, which is a lot considering that it was originally supposed to be only 1st year housing options.

2. shared bathrooms suck in the regard that you share a toilet and a shower with many other people and they may not be as clean as you would like them to be. but as far was waiting in line for showers or sinks.....i've only had to wait for a shower ONCE my entire time at posner. the sink thing @ 9am...its usually people just brushing their teeth and they will move to the side for you to wash your face or brush your teeth also. really not a big deal. i'd say the using the same 2 shower stalls is more of a "ugh" factor than the waiting.

3. there has been and sometimes are dorm parties....but only after exam blocks or on fridays. if you can relax once in awhile and let it be loud then maybe its not the place for you. but on the flip side, you can always stick your head out the door and find someone to talk to. its never lonely.

4. likewise with the bathrooms, i've never had to wait for a microwave or stove. lots of people cook. only a few people eat out EVERY night. for the people that are eating out every night...they'd probably be eating out every night if they lived somewhere else also. the cooking facilities are adequate, a stove, an oven, a microwave, lights....i mean what else do you need. its a little cramped but i never lived in a mansion and i use only 2 ranges at the most. so i don't see the big deal with the kitchen. plus its a nice gathering place to just chat.

5. privacy....um yah, not too much. i mean people bring other "friends" over all the time. but its not like anyone cares, honestly. if you are a girl, well maybe. you would have to walk whoever you are bringing in down the long hallway, which usually has SOMEONE walking in it, esp on a fri/sat night at 3am. but how many guys/girls are you guys planning on bringing anyways?? use THEIR place...LOL

6. i'd say from posner...tufts dental is less than a block away. you just take the shortcut thru the hospital. i spend an avg of 1.5-2minutes outdoors walking from the dorms to the hospital doors. not even long enough to feel cold. trust me and GunnerDMD....you do NOT want to be living across boston commons park in the winter time. either live far enough to use the subway...or close enough to not get frozen walking to school. walking in the cold gets old real fast, esp when you have to do it everyday through a wind tunnel (boston commons).

7. closeness to school is very key. this makes it very easy to hit up pre-clin or the library for late night sessions. the people that i know that live farther from campus, need to head home before it gets too late or dark. and up in the NE, it gets dark around 4:30pm in the winter time. if you are a girl, this is more of an issue since you would have to probably walk through ghetto-ish chinatown at night, whereas the dorms are right next door to the hospital door (So is the metropolitan and various chinatown apts). other people who do not live right next door to school, also aren't able to go home during lunch or class breaks. this means they stay on campus all day or have to bring all their books, lunch, etc to school. for me, it would get annoying. but i'm sure others do not mind.

8. i have heard of one time a police escort was used late at night so the service does work and is efficient. i have never really experienced a problem with safety around posner dorms but the police are very freindly and helpful.

hope all that info helps also! welcome to tufts dental!

Thanks ... you guys are providing some great information and it is really appreciated ... thanks for taking the time to help us all out.

I'll also be moving from VA to boston this summer but I go to school in NY now so hopefully it won't be too hard to go apt hunting.

I definitely want to get an apt and not live in the dorms-i've had enough of that after freshman year of undergrad.

I just plan on coming up this summer and dropping some things off for the fall at a friends house and then staying with different friends while a look.

Why? Did you wanted to look at it some more?

BTW - I would rather get the M3 or IS-F than the Supra; unless they are planning to make the Supra competitive with those above.

:meanie:

burn :boom:this is getting personal ...

A Supra Twin Turbo will **** on an M3 with just a full exhaust (E46 M3). A few more mods and it's no contest. I'd still rather have an M though for overall practicality

responded like a true gentleman ... I would have to agree with the M3 and I know nothing about cars

ha...that's automotive trash talk for ya, I'll keep it professional though for SDN

Toyotas are inferior to BMWs.

I think its tough at this point to say its a definite when the information has yet to come but I do appreciate your enthusiasm ...

So Posner Hall will have 58 slots just for dental students? It seems like anyone who wants to live in a dorm will be able to.

who here does not want to live in the dorms?

well thats actually good news as im also interested in living in the dorms but thought it might be hard ... has anyone been apartment hunting? How much is the rent are you seeing out there?

$900-$1600/mo

oh you can find places to live for $900 in Boston alright, but it's NOT going to be anywhere NEAR the school. At those prices, the apartments are most probably going to be a few miles away from Tufts. It's still not a major problem because Boston has a great transportation system, but certainly not as convenient as being able to walk home.

Plus, it might be in a sketchier neighborhood, the basement of someone's house, small and cramped, etc. I would go ahead and fork over a few more dollars. I have looked at some apartments in Craiglist, none of them are near the school.

dude, what are you doing??!! Go jump on that offer!!

Do the loans that one may take out include these housing expenses?

housing is included in the estimated cost of attendance so yes ... did you guys get the financial aid packet in the mail?

The school will give you two installments, one in September and the other in January. The amount should cover rent/utilities/food for that semester until you get the next installment. You just have to make sure you develop and maintain a proper budget.

I don't know how I feel about this yet. It's so much money. I know as adults we should be able to appropriate our money wisely, but I'd rather it be given to me as a monthly "allowance".

as an adult you should be able to appropriate your money without a monthly allowance ... create a budget and follow it

Um, that's what I also said in my post if you actually read all of it. However, everyone knows we're going to want to explore the city on weekends, go to bars, buy whatever, etc. I'm just saying that some people might have a hard time resisting the temptation not to overspend.

I also think it's a little dangerous to be given so much money and having criminals know dental students carry that much.

oh no dont get me wrong ... im totally worried about budgeting myself. My last post was more of a personal pep talk than anything else

When I read your posts eldirty, the voice of Obama goes through my head! lol:laugh: anyone else??

haha ... was it you that said they thought my avatar looked like Obama?

no, but I had always thought that.
